army is not as bad as you think

as a job. i see this all the time, there is a stigma that only idiots without education join the army to become puppets of the government, but that's really not true. yes, there is a place for the less educated people, its a great way to provide for your family and make a decent living for yourself without having to have a higher education. you'll earn 2k after taxes right of the bat here, name any other job where thats possible without futher education. + you get bonuses when you rank up and for your service time. you get gas money and even rent money if you live far away. you have the best healthcare possible, you dont have to wait for appointments etc. you get additional education like drivers and trucker license as well for free. but if you're educated and have an uni degree, you will jump ranks as soon as you join and get employed as an officer that make a shit ton of money. or just study in the military and get paid around 2.5k after taxes for fucking studying lmao. also the working field are massive, you can do anything from sitting in the office to being an actual combat soldier, nobody is forced to do anything, you can easily change your field. another thing that a lot of people don't understand, if you don't want to go in combat abroad, you don't have to, you are never forced to go. talking about the german army here of course, i don't know what its like in other countries, but i'd be glad to hear some of your experiences.

Even if you don't want to make the army your profession, it's still worth to do the sign ups and spend 1 year in army. It will teach you persevere through tough times and realize life isn't all fun and games (basically teach you how to become a man and that dedication and hard work beats talent). Also gets your friends and memories for life, unless you're really socially awkward.

Obviously I don't really blame a young person who joins the military looking for a better future for themselves and their family, but at the end of the day when you join you are pretty directly supporting the global war machine which profits off of perpetual war and death. If no one joined the military, there would be no soldiers to fight these pointless and/or unnecessary wars for resources and territory all over the world.

Yes, there will probably always be war. But what we have today, which is a globalized war economy that's worth hundreds of billions of dollars per year and incentivizes companies and countries to promote as much war and conflict as possible, and sells weapons to both sides of any conflict, is something entirely different. Most "wars" these days are just excuses to steal territory and resources while lining the pockets of the shareholders in the arms industry.

Exactly, that was my original point. If it was as simple as "I'm joining the military to protect my country" then there wouldn't be any problem with it, but that's not the reality we live in. Especially me since I'm from the US and the US military + arms industry is collectively one of the most evil forces on earth, if not the most evil.

If no one went to army, there’d be no democracy. Countries with no democracy and freedom, like China for example, would just force their people into military. “You don’t want to go to the military? We don’t care, you will, if you want to see your family again.” These dictatorships wouldn’t care about human rights, the people would have to go. They would conquer the entire western world. We would have no democracy. Be grateful that you have as powerful military as you do, otherwise you’d be easy target for these dictatorships.

In Lithuania lots of people dislike the army because of forced conscription, and you dont get to shoot much cause of the budget ofcourse, but other than that its pretty good havent had a guy that complained about the army, The food is good, in training you are quite respected, the living conditions are nice, its all around pretty good.
2022-08-03 19:50
1 reply
It's nice to hear that. Also forced conscription is really not the best thing, but this is not only a problem of Lithuanian army.
2022-08-03 21:08
I'm too lazy to look for those numbers and I'm not really informed. Salary was okish, but overall conditions are pretty bad (like food etc). I must say that it has been improving since 2015-2016, but there is still a long way to go. Also you have mentioned in your thread the stereotype about army aka "army is for idiots", but here it is for poor idiots. The access to high level education if you have enough money is simply too big. Even if you are an absolute imbecile you still can study in some prestige uni and therefore avoid army, or just find some corrupted guy and pay him to save your ass from conscription. Yep, I'm mostly talking about forced service here, but this stereotype makes people disrespect army (not in Ukraine now for obvious reasons) Soldiers here are seen absolutely positive also for obvious reasons. And in other countries - I don't think so (maybe someone from there can correct me) And another aspect is war probability. As we all can see, here the chance of being sent to war is much higher than for Germany or any other EU country. > forced to go to combat Depends on your contract. If someone attacks your country, ofc you are forced to fight. But russia even uses random dudes for invasions, so you are never safe regardless of text in your contract. Pre-war there were also some high-paid contacts about participation In some UN peacekeeping missions. You go to some African 3rd world tribe and just spend there some time In my opinion, it's not worth the time and I wouldn't go there. Maybe someone has a different opinion

It's not bad in itself, of course there's a lot of stigma, but at the end of the day you're serving your country. You just have to question yourself if the interest of your country aren't bad. There's also different jobs in the army. For example, I study cybersecurity and I could work in that field for my country. But I don't think I'd be a marksman or would kill people on the field (note that most people in the army aren't on the field killing people)

100% agree, I always had that in mind how good of a job being in the army is, the variation of what you want to be is huge, decent pay, you always have a place to stay, always have food. you are basically earning money without the need of having to pay for essencials. you get to do some fun shit, you get in shape depending of what you do ofcourse, and you just get really good life experience. Ofcourse you need to remember that its only good in europe mostly, maybe the usa, and some parts in asia. There are lots of shit countries to be in the army though.

people who go in combat earn extra bonuses, here in germany you get around 32 thousand euros for a 6months stay abroad + your salary, so you'll get paid 50k for 6 months, which is a really good amount. also note that in germany we do not have any war, our operations abroad are usually in Mali and Lithuania, which are support and training operations, we basically train foreign militaries.
2022-08-03 19:46
There are A LOT of idiots who join the Military for the wrong reasons, specifically the army. those idiots create a bad stereotype for why a lot of people join the military. In Canada the Military has very good pay and benefits and provides very affordable housing. It's a good way to make a living and get right into the work force. On top of that, depending on what trade you join you can get all sorts of qualifications and credentials for jobs in the civilian sectors. On top of that you get really cool experiences. I got to spend a lot of time in Europe and parts of Asia meeting and working with other nations. Going to places that no one would ever go "I want to go there on vacation", but turned out to be really neat and cool places. Though, I did also go to a lot of shit holes as well.. so good with the bad there. In a lot of nations, the military also provides education funds or pays for your education for service. Some people might be able to afford basic college or university, but other's can't unfortunately. But yes, if you are joining the armed forces, specifically the army, there is the chance you may end up in conflict where you are put in a position where you are, or are supporting the taking of other's lives. And that is a hard thing to grasp, even if you believe you are fighting the bad guy. It should never be taken lightly that it could be a thing you're associated to.
2022-08-03 20:06
I'd only join the air force as an officer. But then again, there's not many jobs in the military for people with my degree.

tbh Army Job is probably one of the most varied by country for example in Ireland yes i know we technically have an army you do pretty much fuck all get paid horrendously and it's a joke hell domestically the most the Army does is help out if there's like a small flood somewhere back in the day during a Bus strike the army were called in to transport people around Dublin in the actual Army transports lol the people loved it another back in the day example was when the rubbish collectors went on strike the army were called in to clean up the city center of Dublin in recent years they ran some advertisements to try and bolster numbers but unsurprisingly this spectacularly failed because of how bad the pay and conditions are in total including reserves we have less then 10,000 Soldiers in a population of 5 Million People

1. of course you can get send on missions abroad, even against your will 2. every couple of years you can get send halfway across germany 3. officers making "shit ton of money" is an overstatement only actually good points are that you can study for free/while getting paid. but you act like thats something unique to the army

2.you cannot send abroad against your will, please inform yourself on this, i'ts simpl not true. 2. as an officer yes, only officers have to change Kompanie/Barrack wvery 2-3 years, nobody else. 3. my dad is a major an he makes 5.5k after taxes. and it onbviously doesn't end there, you're srill able to climb the career ladder even futher and make even more money.

when you sign up you have to sign a form agreeing to be send on missions abroad even if against your will. only reason people arent forced at the moment is cause there are enough volunteers and compare what somebody with a master degree makes in the free economy

you are just wrong, you don't sign that you will be deployed above AGAINST your will, where did you hear that nonsense? you wanna tell me you are guaranteed over 6k in the free market just because you got a masters degree? first of all you need a shit ton of experience to be able to make anywhere close to that, most dont even employ you without prior working experience anyways.

Cringe. Stop promoting the army and war! We get it, you are young and have few alternatives so it is your choice. Just don’t promote it to other people. War is a bad thing. Armies have a bad purpose. How many hail army/war threads have you made?

i don't think "cringe" is the right word for this brother, read #179 please i just wanted to clarify that the army isn't as bad as its portrayed, especially in europe, its a very good path for young people who have absolutely no idea what to do with themselves, who struggle to find a job, who are unhappy with their body, who feel lonely etc. the army can give you all of that, that was my point. nobody is reading this small topic and thinks "hey thats sounds cool, let me enlist!" no, you make your own research, and then decide for yourself if it's something you can imagine doing to improve your life. im sorry to anyone that had the feeling that this is a promoting the army thread, its really more like defending a couple of stigmas that the army has, because lets be honest, outside of america, no country really respects their military.
2022-08-04 13:36
People really don't get that working in the army or in my case the Finnish Defence Forces doesn't automatically mean you are sent to middle east to kill people. There are a lot of jobs not even involving guns like my job and it's pretty much like any other office job, I work about 37h/week with a lot of good benefits like 2h/week paid exercise (actually you can do whatever you want), you can work remote etc. Also the pay is pretty good, 2700€/month and it's a summer job for me.

I mean +1 but id rather join other sects of the military than army. Its the worst of all the options for sure, even if I do think its nice. Id probably join the air force, sit on a base all day and do shit work with a good pay or get a mechanics degree and fix planes. Maybe the navy is the worst branch* (not sect lol) not sure though.

I wouldn't go and state that the army is full of idiots, but it's not a far stretch to imagine. The civil service was a tad above the ranks of the military in smart people. Being 18ish and doing a job as a research programmer at a university in Finland was amongst the best experiences I've had. I couldn't figure out how being in the military can be seen as interesting as the civil service stuff.

I mean my opinion is very biased because i was lucky enough to get into Armoured Brigade (leopard 2a6 crew), so I got to work with some of the smartest people in the army, before we even could touch our tanks, we had to study them and their functions for half a year, during that year my whole view/outlook about finnish military completely changed, because I got to experience something that most people are not going to experience in their life. I made the right decision by going to the army

Right, did you consider the alternatives? Some say that you default by going to the army. I tend to think the same. To go the civil service path you actually do something worth your own and the while of the society. I worked for 12 months in an esteemed research project. It expanded my mind and the whole scope of computer science and software research. There were some of the finest in their fields related to the project. What you say may be true, and I can attest that I experienced something most people never get to experience just because I was competent at programming and was in the right place at the right time. I think that people tend to act defensively when the subject of military comes around. I think that's a really strange concept. If the service is so fucking neat then you shouldn't need to defend it. Whatever. I got to sleep in my own bed during the service and didn't have to do anything compromising my ethical integrity. I think people really should consider civil service since it's a real contribution to society (a year worth of works for practically free), unlike the military that doesn't really contribute to society in real terms given. But to each his own.

you’re talking to me like i said something bad about civil service, i literally just said that some of the smartest people i’ve met, are my friends that i met in the army. also you’re wondering why some people discredit civil service, while trying to discredit military at the same time, which really makes no sense to me, you seem very defensive about it meanwhile i said literally nothing about civil servise. I will use your own words, If the civil service is so fucking neat then you shouldn't need to defend it. i don’t think you should say something like ”unlike the military that doesn't really contribute to society”, if you don’t know anything about finnish defence forces, because i can tell you definitely don’t know what you’re talking about. ill explain in a nutshell, finnish military has different branches that you can choose from, each of which are societal, meaning they will give you an advantage when applying for a job after military. It’s a big part of society as finnish reserve is 900k people. We have defence forces so you can have your freedom Yeah people can say ”we don’t need an army right now, we’re not going to war” you don’t need one until you need one, it’s easy to say that in times of peace. it’s like those people in usa saying defund the police, and those are the same people who call 911 when shit is going down
2022-08-11 18:42
but yeah my point was that it’s very hypocritical of you to try to discredit those who go to the military and at the same time you’re bitter about people discrediting you for choosing civil service
2022-08-11 18:48

Hypocrisy is defined as follows: hypocrisy n 1: an expression of agreement that is not supported by real conviction [syn: {hypocrisy}, {lip service}] 2: insincerity by virtue of pretending to have qualities or beliefs that you do not really have You're talking about stuff that you don't understand. You lack the real conviction for freedom, and you are insincerity by virtue of pretending to have freedom as a virtue. There's the freedom and it's the stuff, you see, my forefathers fought against russkies and germans to give me my fucking freedom. I'm exercising my freedoms man. That's the fucking shit given. Well, it's established that I'm not a hypocrite but you are by having the false virtue of fucknig freedom that, well, whatever? There's the talk about what people fucking do, and don't do. I can talk about civil service as a choise but whatever fucking gives. There's fucking reason to have the alternative a possibility for every male in Finland. I don't have the energy right now to debunk your stuff "yeah lets all disband the police since I don't know what I'm talking about but it sounds like a fucking good argument."

2k euroa after taxes ? That's actualy not amazing, my friend moved to germany and made 2.5k after tax the first month. He's basicaly working a no school job, like maintenance or whatever, plus in DE you can find a mini job to suplement your income. Not haiting but I tought DE army paid more, Bosnian army pay is just under 1k euros for basicaly no work, if you sign up for missions or whatever you can earn 5k+ euro a month depeding on your rank, also you have benefits if you work away from home. Work 7 days rest 7 days (might be 14)

depends on country. for example in russia army is actually for peasants and/or deadbeats who haven't found anything better to do in life, even tho shoigu tries his best to create a positive image (that's basically all he does as a commander). also putin can always start a war in which u will die without any honor, mostly cos of lack of gear, incompetent officers/generals etc etc looking at "special military operation" losses there is like 1 moscow citizen for hundreds of soldiers from hellhole regions and also hundreds of soldiers from ethnic republics (chuvashia, buryatia, tuva etc) who live very poorly too i do believe that in europe/usa army is a good way to go but surely not in our world
