Yeah I think so too. In -87 is was literally so bad. In -88 I think it was like one of the greatest voices of all time and in -89 it was awful again. After that it's been really bad.

wouldnt really count lulu cuz that album isnt really theirs and no matter which band u put on there that shit would have sucked hard but yeah St. Anger is pretty awful. even then 1 or 2 shitty albums dont really ruin a otherwise strong discography.

Sadly for you, Lulu is as much a Metallica albums as it is a Lou Reed album.
If you want to talk about a strong discography, let's talk about Judas Priest or Iron Maiden.
Judas Priest released some of the best metal albums on every decade (except 2000s). Sad Wings Of Destiny, Stained Class, British Steel, Screaming For Vengeance, Defenders Of The Faith, FUCKING PAINKILLER and Firepower more recently.
The 80s run Iron Maiden made was legendary, it is impossible to replicate. Seven legendary albums in a row. They needed 10 more years to release a legendary album again (Brave New World).
It is not like they released a few good albums and then their talent dissapeared, like it happened to Metallica. The last good album the released was in 1991. No, Death Magnetic is not good. No, Hardwire is not good.
And if you think Metallica has a strong discography, you have very low standards or don't know much about metal. Try Symphony X for a truly strong discography.

'' very low standards'' i do think that hardwired is a very solid project with easily the best tracklist since the black album and some songs that i actually really enjoy. death magnetic is meh and i also dont really care for load/reload even tho i do believe that they are kinda overhated. Also i do agree that Iron Maidens discography is amazing but i just never really got into anything they released after ''Fear of the Dark''. Also never really cared about anything Judas Priest related. Still, saying that Metallica is an ''average'' band when they literally shaped the thrash metal genre in the 80's with 4 amazing albums in a row just seems like nonsense to me.

Hardwire has the best Metallica song since The Black Album, Spit Out The Bone, but that's pretty much it. The rest is meh and not good.
Give Brave New World a try, an excellent album, the other Dickinson albums since then are heavily hit or miss.
And for Judas Priest, give at least Painkiller a try, let me tell you, it wipes the floor with every 80s Metallica album. Painkiller is probably THE best metal album. If it's not, it is probably Rust In Peace or Symbolic (by Death, possibly the band with the strongest discography on the whole metal spectrum). Neither Ride, nor Master, nor Justice come close to any of those 3.
And by saying that you don't really care about Judas Priest, you are literally telling me that you have both, very low standards and little knowledge about metal.

I said Death, Symbolic is an album by the band called Death. 0/8 reading comprehension. The band with the strongest discography on metal is probably Death.
And Megadeth is better than Metallica, better musicians and better songs. Yes, Risk and Super Collider are horrible, but better than St. Anger and Lulu, Megadeth on their worst is better than Metallica on their worst. Endgame and Dystopia are far far far superior than Death Magnetic and Hardwired. Hell, even The System Has Failed, United Abominations and 13 are better than those two "thrash" Metallica albums. Mustaine did it flawlessly, Metallica struggles to do a good album. And Broderick and Loureiro are much much better than Hammet. Been listening to Loureiro on Angra before he joined Megadeth. Go listen some Angra. Their only bad album is Fireworks, the rest is incredibly good prog power.
So, you don't care about Judas Priest and don't know what Death is. You really don't know anything about metal outside Metallica, Maiden and Megadeth.
When you left behind this "Metallica is the best" era, you will cringe at yourself.
You're german, for fuck's sake, go listen some of your own metal. Germany has some of the best metal in the world and you are still listening to Metallica. Do yourself a favor, listen to Accept, Running Wild, Rage, Grave Digger, Helloween, Gamma Ray, Blind Guardian, Primal Fear, Edguy, Avantasia, Powerwolf, the big 4 of teutonic thrash.

Megadeth has always had more skilled musicians, such as Friedman and drummers like Menza and Gar. I think they always have too many filler songs though. Only except to that is Rust in Peace and Peace Sells, but every other album is filled with filler songs that are pointless. Metallica had more 'complete' albums where you can listen to them from start to finish. I don't like any of Metallica's songs after the Black album pretty much.

Yeah I think mellica, iron maiden, black sabbath, etc are all great bands, but metal has evolved quite a bit over time. Obvious those bands had an enormous influence though.
If someone's only contribution are household names, then they probably aren't a big metal fan because most quality metal these days is not radio friendly. The best metal bands over the past 30 years are unknown to 99% of people in the usa (might be different in scandinavia where metal is more popular)
I dunno dude, Foo Fighters had better metal vibes in most of their songs and they're not even a metal band. Stopped listening to Metallica after Jason left. And just to put it out there - a lot of people who worked with them described them as dickheads. Even the great Jeff Bridges in Big Lebowski calls them a bunch of a**holes. Metallica is still highly respected in the metal community for their 80s albums. That's despite them "selling out" multiple times, the napster thing, and their poor image. Image by the way is something that people care about for rappers, but metal heads don't really give a shit.
I'm on a couple of metal sites that have user ratings, and two of metallica's albums are in the top 5 all time on both sites. Two other albums are well rated in the top 250 or so. The self titled black album is not highly regarded in the metal scene but it is in the mainstream.
Bands are often asked about their influences, and Metallica is one of the most cited metals bands. Their impact is apparent anyway.
I swear this thread is full of people who have at most a fleeting interest in metal talking out of their ass. I would never go in a rap thread or join a jazz conversation and tell people they are wrong about tupac or miles davis.

Not really no, I like black / folk metal. I can relate to that music, those lyrics and overall feeling . Metallica was okay(ish) 15 years ago for me, I can still enjoy it on a car ride or something since most of my friends prefer singing that quote "they can understand".

Seek and Destroy, The Four Horsemen, Anesthesia, entire RtL album, entire MoP album, entire AJFA album, Nothing Else Matters, Sad but True, Enter Sandman, My Friend of Misery, Wherever I May Roam, Unforgiven, King Nothing, Unforgiven 2. Even the newer albums with songs like Hardwired and Dream no More slap. Not many bands can compare.

Saw Them live in '92 on the Where ever we may roam tour best show ever, mostly like the songs from :ride the lightning, master of puppets & and justice for all.
Seen Them again in 2009 wish i hadnt.
Still like the band though Just more the older songs, even had the band play dyers eve at my wedding cleared half the dansfloor but we still made a pit with a small group :).
