Most overrated city you've been to ?
f0rest |
Sweden MetroRush
I will start : Paris: surprisingly dirty in a lot of neighborhoods, almost got pick-pocketed at the Sacré-Cœur Basilica with 1 guy talking to me about buying some knockoff handbag and another guy trying to steal my phone, another attempt when a woman asks me "is this your ring?" outside the Musée d’Orsay. The architecture is amazing and the food is pretty good but still overrated.

Not bad at all, where you go completely depends on what you're looking for The UK has a lot of beautiful old/ historic towns in the countryside as well as having a lot of busier cities with places to see. WAY more homeless than my home city, superficial people (most people only making friends to social climb or get something out of it), huge wealth divide thats visible (like 3 story gated mansion and 1 block away is a homeless shelter with people shooting drugs up on the front porch), everything expensive, pretentious bars ( like juice bars that charge you $20 for ginger and tumeric shots etc) Alcohol bars expensive too

sorry to break it to you homie but the collective west are general more superficial than the rest of the world, to be more specific the North Americans are marinated and soaked with pure superficiality, tbh American Psycho's Patrick Bateman sums up my experience with so many Canadians while I was there, people trapped in their personas and unable to escape, its truly a biblical-esque phenomenon that's happening over there.

You can fully walk San Francisco, Seattle, Chicago, NYC, Boston, Washington DC, etc. or use a bike for the rest. Not that big a deal. And there are massive shopping centers and nice downtown areas in a shit ton of the cities. Just one example: youtube.com/watch?v=Bo0BvB4BUoA
2022-08-28 23:54

Like in NYC most of them are roads with pavements (sidewalks) next to them, not full on pedestrian zones as you get in Europe. Boston may be the closest thing to Europe, but from most the cities like NYC i visited, it is pretty non existent in contrast.
2022-08-28 23:56

Really not true for NYC as well. Or SF, etc. Like 2-3 massive parks in each that dwarf anything in EU cities, a lot of pedestrian zones solely for them as well. Just one example: youtu.be/-IpXdtWfneI?t=3327

Yes, on the sidewalk. I lived in DC for 2 years for my studies. Other than parks and around monuments, there isn't a pedestrianised centre. Look up pedestrian areas of places like Florence, Frankfurt, Glasgow, Birmingham, Amsterdam, Dubrovnik, Edinburgh.

Went to every one of them, lived in Marseille and Lyon. They are very different cities, Lyon feels like a smaller and nicer Paris, it's big, lot's of things to do and the Rhone quays reminds me a lot of Paris. It's fairly cleaner I'd say also. Being close from the Alps is amazing also. Marseille... Marseille is very unique, you will need to be much more adventurous and open minded. But the food, the culture and the sea (Calanques) is unmatched. It's crazy living and crazy beautiful, it's also less secure and sometimes dirty, less so in the center now it feels. Nice is a typical touristic city in the Cote d'Azur, close to the Alps, it's very beautiful but expensive and not that much interesting in itself. Toulouse is great, young and dynamic, good mood and somewhat cultural also. (I can add info for other cities also, you should consider Rennes for example or Bretagne in itself)

Cities are mostly the same because its all owned by the same corporations. But Paris is truly amazing piece of work, no modern building comes close to that city, it's actually pathetic how terrible these modern buildings are in comparison.

Yup you got it, I remember before I travelled to Paris people would also tell me the French are rude, I thought I would be rude too if there were a fuck load of foreigners coming to my home too. But yeah I don't think a lot of people understand what those buildings are to appreciate them, people seem to think that glass and digital screens are more impressive, maybe if we put some screens on the Arc people might like it more.

Maybe you're right. Beach cities tend to get visitors who get drunk and do things like, I don't know, jumping from balconies. No sé, Madrid es súper bonita y bastante amigable, no hay mucha delincuencia y la gente es agradable. Where are you from?

in Italy: Milan. It's an interesting city and not a bad place at all but I see it as a mitteleuropean rip-off with less soul than the other big italian cities(Rome, Turin, Naples for example.) In Europe: I don't know if it's overrated or not but I really didn't like Rotterdam. Most underrated In Italy: Turin. If you come to Italy and are planning to see like Milan or something, stahp and go Turin. You won't regret Overall: Krakow. I really enjoyed my time there. Chill people. nice architecture, rich history, very unexpensive and delicious restaurants. You will get addicted to cabbage

Milan has a pretty high crime rate and is not that interesting for what its worth. It's also quite expensive. Turin is definitely a nice city, but I would say Verona beats it out. Italy has a ton of nice cities that are better than a lot of the touristy cities.

I really enjoyed the New England region, but currently live near Philly, so Im like an hour away from NYC and the South Jersey beaches. There’s a lot of underrated places too going a little south to Virginia and North Carolina. More on the west coast, I liked Colorado, Utah, and Washington in general. City wise, I liked the coziness of New England cities, Charleston SC, and Savannah Georgia. Bigger cities like Chicago IL, Seattle WA, Nashville TN, San Antonio TX, and Austin TX is definitely fun and underrated. Boston MA, San Francisco CA, and San Diego CA is pretty cool too

Colorado is amazing and so is NYC of course, the center of modern western civilization. Sadly I've never been to Philly, I would like to go since it's historically such an important city. I really like North Carolina which has nature few places have, awesome beaches in the east incredible mountains in the west. As for cities I always thought San Francisco was very unique, as well as Austin.

Looks amazing! I love the old architecture as well as how they planned the city well, turn one way old buildings, turn the other and you see the modern buildings. I also like that there seems to be a lot of life and movement downtown. Only disappointment was I didn't see Mac, Charlie, Dennis, Frank or Sweet Dee :) I love that show!

Yea its also very walkable, plenty of narrow streets. If we are talking architecture wise, Chicago is definitely my favorite. NYC is a close second, but Chicago in general is a lot cleaner, less crowded, more classic skyscrapers, and the riverwalks are beautiful. youtu.be/UWdfaNWThnA

Overrated list ---- Athens full of garbage and low tier graffiti. visit Athens for the anarchist society vibe. Ankara Dogshit, doesn't deserve to be called the capital. Kızılay is the only decent district in the city. İstanbul For a city that has always been quite important historically, it is disgraceful. Apart from a few swanky districts such as Kadıköy, it is an absolute sh*thole. Riddled with immigrants and refugges, the entire city is a tourist trap. Underrated List ---- Trieste dope architecture, ppl were friendly last time i visited. nice food and clean air. barcole beach goated Çanakkale open minded ppl, little to no refugees or immigrants, decent food. Tbilisi best food (Kaçapuri) i've ever eaten was in this city, the capital of Georgia.

Cities i can recommend Porto Madeira (Funchal) Amsterdam during summer/winter paris (winter) berlin I cant recommend -Den Haag (to windy, the beach is typical northsee like, didnt like the smell) -frankfurt (REALLY depends if you have money or not. I made one time awesome experience and the other time bad experience. Many young people who cant behave correct) -istanbul (too many people, expensiv for no reason, scammers and really depends on which restrict you staying) -Lissabon (it really depends, i had nice moments but there are to many immigrants trying to sell drugs. Annoying. And maybe quite dangerous. Some tourists got robbed with a knife 2m next to me in a park. I was safe because i met some guys from lissabon and the robbers thought i am also portugues haha)

+1 Paris in autumn or early spring >> Avoid summer at all cost, work going on everywhere, uncomfortably hot and since there's less cleaning agents some places might have trash stacking up a bit
2022-08-11 16:22
For those who are wondering why Madeira is good, the answer is "SIIIIIIIIUUUU" or "SIIIIMMMM" everywhere (Cristiano Ronaldo is from there). Besides jokes, I already have been in Madeira it was perfect! Good food, good wheather (not too much cold and not much hot), have some awesome natural places to visit, you have many Hotels too choose. If you don't speak portuguese, don't worry, most of the people there are able to speak English (might not be an excellent english, but overall it is good) and there are some people which are also able to speak French and Spanish.

Paris has been a tourist hotspot for almost 100 years, surely Parisians have adapted and learned some english? Not every tourist is gonna learn french
2022-08-26 11:23
3 replies
Just learn how to say basic words in French and you'll be fine. BTW it's the least any tourist can do when visiting a foreign country.
2022-08-26 11:34
stupid comment mate its not because you live in paris that you have to learn english because its crowded of tourists. if people dont want to learn its their choice even tho its helpful objectively in today's society but "you have tourists you should learn english" isnt the right way to think when you visit a place at least learn a few words, how to say hello, how are you, i mean basic thing and saying "bonjour comment allez vous" "bonjour pouvez vous m'aidez" (hello how are you doing, hello can you help me?) these are simple to learn. People living here don't have to adapt to YOU, YOU have to adapt to the country you're visiting. Also millions of people that are in suburbs come everyday in paris to work, or just to take the train so they don't give a single fuck about speaking to tourist, me first so many tourists are rude, dirty and throwing stuff on the ground, not respectful at all.

That's not what I meant, I didn't say people should come knowing 0 about the French language. I visited and studied duolingo french for a week when I Visited Paris and Bordeaux. Im just saying its helpful to know a bit of English in modern society (Communicating with other Europeans especially). When I went to Manila in the Philippines, everyone spoke English yet that country is in Asia and far in distance from any Primary English speaking country. Sweden and Switzerland were also countries where I visited and people were multilingual and could speak no problem

Yeah, but he's saying how can it be overrated if no one rates it in the first place?

Stockholm, gangshootings like its a freaking mexico, areas either billionaire rich or dirt ass poor ghettos, everything is freaking expensive, no one in service jobs speaks english or anything else than swedish, some don't even speak swedish. Not to mention traveling within the city from A to B takes forever because for some reason busses are about as slow as walking.

LA easily. I studied abroad in San Diego for 9 months back in 2014 (San Diego was actually a pretty cool city btw) but I visited LA twice while I was there and absolutely fucking despised it both times. Tons of homeless and dirty people, the city itself is a dirty traffic filled unintelligently designed mess, and everyone else is either fake as fuck, obnoxious as fuck (there's often an overlap here) or out of touch with reality. Not just overrated but also genuinely the worst place I've ever visited in my entire life, would never go back. SD was great though and some of the towns near LA like Malibu and Newport Beach were pretty good. I'm surprised so many people are saying Paris, I actually thought the city was designed well, had a lot to do, and was nice to walk around. Aside from a policeman being very rude to me when I asked for directions, a waiter thinking I was American (? think it might've been my accent when I talk English), and some gypsies trying to scam me for money outside the Eiffel Tower, I actually very much liked Paris.

Agreed on LA. Horrendous place. I don't think Paris is dogshit, but I think a lot of people - particularly Americans (sorry, not all of you) overly romanticize the place and see it as some sort of fairytale wonderland where true love sprouts around every corner like blades of grass on a field. Paris is just a large European city with all of the typical problems that large European cities encounter - crime, immigration, smelling of cat shit, etc.; I honestly believe that there are nice parts about the city too but as with anywhere it's important to temper one's expectations and know what you're getting into.

Shanghai. Beautiful city but expensive and all the cons of any city in China (surveillance cameras everywhere, dumb tourist restrictions) Cops are basically thugs most of the time ( eat for free at at the restaurants, punish some street vendors for trying to make a living)

Paris is okay, but I am somewhat ambivalent abut many of the huge monuments - they seem to be more about some president that wanted to celebrate himself, instead them meant as celebrations of achievements or events. And also the big scale of them is just to much. Food wise you can find amazing things for sure, but there also a lot that just okay and much of the okay tries to pretend to be something special.

Very true. Though it is slightly more enjoyable to visit paris in the off-season of tourism. Way less people but still a shit ton of traffic. There are nice places in Paris but in general it's just a chaos imo. There are much nicer places 100km away from paris and especially the alps and Perpignan at the southern coast

#Paris is definition of beeing overrated as a city in EU. #Los Angeles is my no.2 #Moscow/St Petersburg - main area of the city looks nice but You go at the edge of the city and it looks like its 1920. (Russia actually looks sh!thole in general, I felt like I visited people from previous century) I mean it, if You wanna feel how time machine works, just go to Russia. #Ankara #Calcutta - no words, just watch some yt videos and You will see what I mean. #Rio / Sao Paulo

No one drives a Lada except children who don't have a driver license. There are no toilets in the villages, just like in Europe, where there is no sewage system. dont fool urself doggie u looks so dumb with ur jealousy lies

Dude I was in Russia and villages literally look like they're build in 1890 or something. I had to take a sh!t outside in some wooden thing and people literally told me that every1 have those. I've seen building in fkin Moscow without sewage system and it was 8 years ago. Ur best city still have buildings where people live without toilet in their apartment. They have to do it in some shared toilet with the entire floor. You know whats the best part? I've seen it cuz I was there. You're probably one of those poor Russians that even without sanctions You wouldnt be able to travel cuz its too expensive. So please, where in EUROPE people dont have sewage system. Give me tier1 country cuz u guys always say that Russia is tier1. Your country is treating you like sh!t and You still love it.
