Looking for some top class movies similar to these, with a great emotional story that actually makes you feel something (unlike most). I'm a fan of good soundtracks, so that would be nice too. - The Shawshank Redemption - Schindlers List - The Green Mile - Interstellar - The Social Network

From a musicians perspective, whiplash isn't perfect by any means. A lot of things that doesn't make sense Still a good movie tho.

it's not about music, it's about being abused by your music teacher
2022-09-26 21:51
See for me I was both a drummer and a singer so Whiplash got me because it just gave me that feeling I used to get when I worked with my director who treated us in a similar way. I hate it for that, but that is why it is good. That emotion of hate that someone who only has this small department as their world where they control everything because they never made it and must crush talent. Such a common thing in music that everyone talks about but finally can point to something and go "that".

It's a very good movie, don't get me wrong. But there are still things that doesn't make sense. Take for example Fletchers rant where he throws a chair at Neimann, he is expecting him to be able to count a perfect 215 beat, which no person can do without a metronome to assist them.

Whiplash is insane ur wrong Great movies are parasite, whiplash, jojo rabbit (ignore the name the movie is sick) And also a time to kill, good will hunting, and most films by Quentin Tarantino. Pulp fiction and django have Great soundtrack but they’re not my favourite

Agree to disagree then I feel the same way about most the films you listed too, they are good but not something I would deem above 8/10. Not really a fan of Tarantino films but really enjoyed Django, added a time to kill to my watchlist cuz it sounds right up my alley

If your into foreign films watch Oldboy, Parasite (you probably have already), memories of murder and come and see. Also I understand that some people doesn’t enjoy “old films” but once you start enjoying them a whole new world of classic masterpieces opens up. I also didn’t enjoy old films when I started consuming large amount of films but now I prefer old films over new ones.

About the Japanese cultural part I agree with you so much! Through the more recent movies I also got into the older ones which brought me to Ozu and Kurosawa who became some of my favourite directors. East Asian cinema has so much to offer. Korean, Taiwanese, Hong Kong... I explore it since years and even had the chance to participate at movie festivals there.

i have all kurosawa's classics on my watchlist since 2020, but im extremely reluctant about watching black and white movies so i always postpone. Also, i'm not having too much free time lately, besides shit posting on hltv here and there, and his movies are long af... btw, are you working in the industry? how did you managed to sneak yourself in there?

I am lucky, that I really like black and white movies. It makes it easier for me to watch the old ones. Still it is an effort for me to watch the older often more slow paced movies after I watched newer movies for a while. But when I watch like 5 old ones in a row it is very enjoable for me. I am not working in the industry. I just really like art and movies. Although my soon to be wife worked in the industry in Taiwan, which made it possible for me to attend some festivals. Sorry I could not respon earlier. I can only post 5 times a day.

I have watched it, damn I must have watched all thrillers(( nothing more to enjoy in my life. great movie as almost all in the 90s and 2000s by Wong Kar Wai. Did you watch 2046? It is more crazy but still a good sequel in my opinion.

Yes I did. I'm fluent in both Cantonese and Japanese, but there's still alot of cultural things which I might have failed to understand in 2046. It really is very difficult to understand. I've watched it 2 to 3 times but I still don't really get it. In the Mood for Love is alot easier to appreciate with Doyle's great cinematography and scene construction. Even for In the Mood for Love, even as a local the language used is not excatly the language I use in day to day life. I'd imagine alot of it is lost to the English translation. If you enjoy asian films I'd recommend Farewell My Concubine (1987). This is another masterpiece from Hong Kong. It really is an incredibly beautiful film

I can only fully agree with you about the cinematoraphy. Every shot is like a painting. >Masterpiece >Interstellar literally one of the most overrated movies of all time, don't get me wrong, it is a good movie but to call it a masterpiece is a hell of a stretch, that whole "I was the ghost all the time" thing is really corny. That being said, Arrival is a much better sci-fi movie than Interstellar could ever hope to be.

I think my favorite is either The Prestige or Inception but Dunkirk is pretty good as well. He’s a pretty good director overall but people tend to overrate him a bit imo. Still looking forward to Oppenheimer tho.

seems kind of expensive tbh, its metal so it makes sense but why have metal instead of traditional framed paper posters
2022-09-26 23:31
1 reply
It is expensive a bit, but very good and you can switch positions freely if wanted to between posters cause they work with magnets, also good quality
2022-09-27 00:20
I have like 8 of them lol, first of all its good quality priniting onto the metal material. It works with magnets that are seating on leafs that you stuck to the wall so the wall wont suffer if you want to rip the magnet off the wall. Magnets are strong and the posters are pretty light so it really holds on and if you buy Large or XL you get more magnets so its ok. You can always change positions between your posters immediately cause you just pull it off the magnet. You HAVE to own walls that are a flat surface cause if its a bumpy one it will probably fall off. If your wall is ok you follow instructions and do it just as said and strongly stick the magnets to the wall above well placed leafs and its alll gooood. I love my posters alot and i think its worth it, looks more luxurious than a paper poster for sure. Also important to point out that most posters probably will look way better with gloss version than normal poster.

Yeah pretty much all of the version are long. I'd recommend instead of watching the shortened foreign version or the original 3h Finnish version people should watch the extended version turned in to a mini series. It's looks to be 4.5h and at least in Finland it's on Netflix. Honestly the longer it is the better it gets.

surprised to see no one mentioned Andrei Tarkovsky yet, so... the thing about tarkovsky is, he believes that you shouldn't really think or try to understand a movie while you're watching, you need to feel it, just let it come to you as you see it, so a lot of his movies have long scenes that are really well made so you can embrace it. .Stalker (1979) (wonderful, i don't know what to say about it, tarkovsky movies are on another level, it goes into you on a different way that movies generally don't) .The Mirror (1975) (more of a personal view on Tarkovsky life, full of emotion, nostalgia, peaceful moments, different timelines...) .Wings of Desire (1987) (a emotional view on Spirituality, Humanity, Love... as angels walks through people in a Berlin divided by a wall, directed by Win Wenders) .The Thin Red Line (1998) (A movie about War, Love, Humanity, Nature... one of my favorites from Terrence Malick) .The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (2013) (A lovely movie from Ben Stiller) .Oslo, 31st August (2011) (it's a interesting movie, a young writer dealing with his addictions and depression, and broken relationship. from a trilogy called "Oslo" by the Norwegian director Joachim Trier, well know by the most recently released "The Worst Person in the World") .The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (2007), it's a sad movie really, you'll see it when you finish it, you don't expect it to be, but it is. 2 more, i'll leave it to you: Days of Being Wild (1990) by Wong Kar-Wai and Hiroshima Moun Amour (1959) by Alain Resnais

Tarkovsky is really hard to get into, I like his films for a single viewing but i feel like he was given too much freedom and could have easily trimmed his films into something that is actually watchable rather than films that have a lot of amazing elemnts in them but the overall piece is overdrawn and slow (not that slow films are bad but his films are basically nonsequitors)
2022-09-26 20:44
