Nice one :) My neighbour had one and it lived to 20+ years. My fiancee and I have a Devon Rex and she also has a street mongrel, an American Shorthair and a Sphynx (they are with her mom). The Sphynx recently had kittens so I think she may have kept on to a few more as well. I also have a semi-wild mongrel who lives in one of my country homes.

The fucking breeding of dogs is eugenics at best, and more deprived when you look at it more carefully. I wouldn't suggest that you get a breed of dogs, but something like an uh, cross-breeded dog, from a shelter for stray dogs. The eugenics has resulted in diseases in dogs. But you should read up on the characteristics of dog breeds, like are they temperamented? And do they socialize with humans? Also it's a shitty business to have dogs, like it's winter in the morning and there's -15C outside and you need to get out to let the dog to piss and shit. If the companionship of the dog outweights the bad things you should definiately take one. Personally I had dogs at my home as a kid and it was annoying as fuck.

Maybe it's you the one who should learn about eugenics and diseases. You're talking like if Finnish people only have children with Finnish people they will turn into retards or something, that's not how genes work.
If you buy a dog from someone who studies breed lines, does it because they love them and does it because the function the dog has to perform instead than if he's more or less cute, the dog will be perfectly healthy and it will has less behavior problems (probably).

You don't have a lot of experience with breeding of dogs? The whole point is to choose a model for the race and it will breed a lot of dogs. The point is eugenics per se. You do think that your optimization is sufficient to help breed dogs that are according to the race model. This will cause problems, since the inbreeding happens and the genepool is very limited. There's races that have massive defects since they've been bred for a long time. I didn't say retards but defects will occur. Finns are inbred people to some extent but we're not all retarded. You're right about teh genes not working like "that", we don't know how genetics works, and we make mistakes and that results in shit like inbreeding. People are not smart enough to make the genetics work, and if they do, they sure as hell are not breeding dogs. Now this is not the way the world works, like for hunting dogs there's apparently less inbreeding, and they are quite well. But as you said, we don't know how genetics works.
We had a kennel back when I was a kid and we had many breeds of puppies. I've been to dog shows more than I care to count, and the fucking business is not about loving the dogs, but making perfect dogs by choosing the qualities of the parents of the puppies. Some breeds produced 9 puppies, and my cunt of a mother did take three of them to the vet to have them killed and this was because, well, the puppies had bad characteristics.

I'm sorry for your personal experience, but kill puppies is not what someone who love dogs would do, just a farm, usually if one dog has any problem the same breeder keeps it or they gave them for free if the color or whatever is out of standard.
There are races that should be removed because they have no sense and they are heavily inbreeded but not all of them, that's mostly why I included working dogs and not breed just by looks in my sentence.
If a breed has some known diseases and the kennel is an average one, they will test parents to avoid certain genes to reproduce those problems, same with blood, a good breeder, will travel thousands of km to avoid close kinship or even if they look for certain traits they will breed every x gen, for example two parents that are big and strong will have a 4th gen ancestor that was bigger and stronger than usual, so the pups will tend to that, so the "same blood" is around 3% that's what seems to give no mutation genes problems while boosting certain traits.
Eugenics have a big role on dog breeding but a good breeder will not twist it to an evil point.

A dog isn't some kind of accessory. You really have to think long for such a decision. Every dog breed has a different character and different needs. It really depends what fits with you as a person and with what you can offer the dog. I know lots of people who live in a tiny apartmentment and go for a husky who needs space and exercise while they only walk the dog for like 20 minutes per day. Some dogbreeds need at least 3 hours of intensive training per day. Those same people return the dog after a year or so with the argument that the dog is too intense when it's actually them who ruined the dog. A dog is a commitement for at least 10+ years. Having said this, I own a mix of Labrador, Australian Shepherd, Border Colie and Frisian stabijhoun, its a family friendly dog who can be trained fairly well, is smart, loyal and needs about 1-2 hours of exercise per day.

IMO it's best to adopt or shop responsibly, and always make sure you'll be able to provide for them properly.
By shopping responsibly that I mean going to a recognised breeder that'll do health checks etc before selling any of the dogs.
Whatever you do just don't buy from a backyard breeder, a dog from them is a lot more likely to have significant health issues while being poorly bred. My parents and I learnt this one the hard way as a kid.
