The original phonk artists care because now when you youtube phonk you're greeted by this tik tok viral shit instead of the real ones who created actual phonk and where this sound even came from. If the correct terms were used "house phonk" or "drift phonk" etc then i wouldn't have a problem. But all these bozos are literally stealing revenue from actual artists that created the actual genre.
As an individual person i don't care but as a music fan and supporter of these underground artists i'm fucking pissed.

That's what all the fuss is about. A few years ago Phonk was this chill beat genre with rap samples and there was no mistaking the word Phonk for anything else. When you see it now you have to guess which "Phonk" is actually adressed. It's so annoying especially when Cloud and Drift sound NOTHING alike...

phonk is so disgusting. Like the whole vibe is just so dark, negative, i swear its just another generational musical trend for depressed teens to listen to. There is no beauty, no melody, the rhythm is just so basic. Every track sounds the same, i mean for people outside of any genre that given genre might appear that way, but i swear each phonk track is like 1:1 copy. "Phonk is a subgenre of hip hop and trap music directly inspired by 1990s Memphis rap." - It's basically trap music but someone had to give it extra name xD At least drift phonk or this "2021 phonk" sounds different from trap and I can "hear" why people call it "phonk", the "OG Phonk" sounds just like every soundcloud rapper so nothing much different than trap. But I guess people would fight over genre name lmao, I don't really care, if the song is good it's good no matter what genre it's supposed to be, especially in electronic music where genres blend very easily.

To me the main difference between Phonk and Trap Rap is that Phonk is more about production and the beat that carries the song. Also the rap samples repeat more often throughout the song and are (mostly) kind of quiet - sometimes to an extend where I can hardly understand what is being said - but that's alright as it gives off another kind of vibe compared to Trap Rap

Phonk has essentially been around since 2012-2013 and was always known as this chill trap hybrid where producers could really show off their skills with production
then after a couple of years a sub-genre emerged called drift phonk which is all about making melodies with 808 cowbells, and for some reason (I think mostly because of tiktok) it has taken over the name "phonk", so I can understand why theres a sense of elitism
imagine being a metal fan and suddenly the Nickelback sound is what people associate with your favorite style of music

I can also understand the motives behind it and I know what phonk is, it's just weird because it goes against the subjectivity of music choice, despite the odd and unnecessary comparisons to the older and more classic choices of the same style of music.
It would be like comparing Craig David to Wigan Pier - As good as they are and despite being similar in music styles, they aren't really comparable except in their genre, which is the same case here.

Drift Phonk and OG Phonk are worlds apart in terms of sound design and general feel of the song. Only thing they have in common is the muffled rap samples (I'm intentionally leaving out the combells as they have become less and less common in modern OG Phonk)

my guess: Early Drift Phonk (like LXST CXNTURY) was imo still Phonk as it was just like the other tracks but with super strong emphasis on the bass and kind of a dark vibe (but still chill in a way). THEN Drift Phonk made a rapid change into this weird House Hybrid which completely changes the general tempo and has an excessive use of distorted cowbells and oversteering sound effects. At this exact point we should have just made up a new name for the genre as it strayed SO far from what it originated from. (Isnt that how new genres are born?)
But yet here we are having to unify two completely different genres under the "Phonk" banner. Oh dear...

kordhell and scarlord released a nice album lately I think it features a lot of really strong phonk music which scarlord's aggressive vocals compliment well
