Understandable, do not worry, my friend. Brazil is a quite large country, so just like in the USA, Brazil has 27 (I think) states, with hundreds of cities in each of them and one of those cities is the state capital. States have a few different laws, but all respect the federal laws settled by the constitution. States come in all sizes, mine for example is as big as the country of Spain.
2023-02-01 20:27
In the English language you can use the word state interchangeably with country. So it is confusing for foreigners who aren't expected to understand Brazils state structure. The way it was worded made it equally confusing as they aren't born English speakers. But it has now been clarified what they intended to say.

Rio is a shithole but actually is not even that dangerous as the media paint it to be. I mean, for EU standards is pretty violent and there’s several places that are literally governed by the crime. But the overall homicide rates aren’t that high for SA standards even tho small crimes are common. If you go to the northeast capitals of Brazil, it’s way dangerous

+1. America needs to fix up their railway system and publicize it. We have a lot of railways, they're just privatized and therefore public transportation is a hassle. They also need to be fixed up, but it probably neva gonna happen.

+1 i don't even understand how can american cities even function without public transport everything is full of cars, parking spaces, highways cutting through neighbourhoods
2023-02-02 18:55
1 reply
It's simple: It's a hassle. American cities themselves are just so spread apart compared to the average European city. This is to make space for carparking. For example, a NFL stadium has a capacity of ~60k. This means you need a LOT of parking spots, so that's what they do. Look at almost any NFL stadium and you'll see a parking lot the size of, if not larger, than the actual stadium itself. Look at Highmark Stadium in Buffalo.

I went to Bukovel when the war started, holy fuck I still believe it would be easier to stay in Kyiv and suffer through the early bombings… The whole place smells like shit, there are rivers with actual shit running through the place because THERE IS NO CANALIZATION SYSTEM. And many hotels cheat the regulations and build shit wells that arent deep enough, so shit literally gets into all local waters in humongous amounts. Tap water smells like shit as well. Wherever you go the smell follows you. Thats the 1 thing I remember from Bukovel - everything smelled like shit. I also got some fucking massive sore red spot on my hand during the time I spent there. Still no clue why, it went away within days of me leaving that place. Obviously the prices are insane too and the friendly western Ukrainians decided to raise the prices a bit when the war started as well

Paris, expensive, ugly in most places, disgusting, kinda insecure, arrogant and ignorant people, most tourists when they think about France, they think about Paris, but let me tell you : Paris is in France, but France isn't in Paris. Bordeaux is the same because they made a train line linking Paris to Bordeaux, hence the city is contaminated by parisians. honourable mention : Lyon, Montpellier, Nantes.

Aussig clear winner tbh. Maybe Most could be compared. The amount of drugs & overall crime is insane. Honorable mention is Prague, as some neighborhoods can be really scary/dangerous. And the amount of drugs in Prague is out of this world on what small state Czech is.

Most is a really good shout too, but I never visited it (thankfully) so I can't really speak on how bad it really is. Prague is another entity of its own, but at least it has some spaces where you aren't going to be knocked out by the amount of meth in the air.

Quebec is very boring, and had quite a few odd people around, but mostly harmless and charming. I'd say the middle of Canada is much worse, natives are really aggressive and violent, way more crime, way colder. Regina is probably the worst bigger city in Canada.

Have you been to Regina? Drunk natives were everywhere and rather aggressive. Nowhere near as bad as the native Aboriginals in Australia, but still Regina was the worst place in Canada I've been. Vancouver is a close second, I've traveled a *lot* and lived in Denmark, Germany, USA, Australia and Canada and I've never ever seen as many homeless people as I did in Vancouver. Very beautiful city but the homeless situation is confronting to say the least. Quebec I found very boring, but not that bad, just a bland city.

Homeless people across canada congregate in Vancouver because it has the warmest winters in Canada and they can survive outside. Don’t get me wrong our housing and drug addiction situation is terrible and there’s no excuse for it but the homeless problem in Vancouver is inflated.

Yeah makes sense and that was what I was previously told, but honestly it's shocking and really needs a solution. Maybe San Francisco, LA or Philadelphia are worse now, hard to say, but Vancouver's homeless problem always struck me as being the worst I'd seen in a first world country.

yea its ridiculous, we have the highest housing costs relative to income in the G20. we have a social safety net for the middle class but not the poor. too many americans in canada and canadians with american mentalities for this to be solved with a scandinavian style welfare system. doesn't help that china floods our country with dirty fentanyl too. most homeless are serious addicts. in the case of LA i think they have double the homelessness per capita. it sounds like cope but it's basically true that just about every homeless person in canada is grouped up in 1 part of vancouver as opposed to spread out throughout american cities. it's a shame because that city is beautiful and consistently ranked as one of the most livable cities in the world

There is a city in my state called "Campos do Jordão" That is a complete shit hole for locals. It'ss a Very beautiful city, famous for its cheeses, sweets and winter festival, where a lot of people from all over Brazil come to tourist. The problem is when there is no festival going around. You see, the city is beautiful, therefore rich people want to be there, but they only want to be there during the winter festival, so they built a shit ton of mansions to stay during the festival, and the mansions stay empty during most of the year. The economy of the city is based on tourism, so normal locals only get reasonable money during the winter, and because of the amount of mansions, it's super expensive to live in this city, so the majority of locals are poor and live in favelas, while a bunch of mansions are empty. Tl:DR: A city with a bunch of abandoned mansions, where most of the people live in favelas and only make good money during the winter.

It depends, for example I love going to Gothenburg, but the bad areas in gotheburg have also been on the rise. But I never visit them or would live there, so whats the point? I will still rate the city high Gbg and Sthlm are more fun than Malmö But Malmö is easily on 3rd place in Sweden in terms of "fun" I take Malmö any day of the week over any random 100k city in Sweden where you can do nothing, and they have bad areas as well
2023-02-01 13:37

All cities have bad areas especially the big three but in Malmös case it is so bad that the economy is running on a deficit and requires economic aid from the government to make its budget work out. From that point of view Malmö is the worst out of the "major" cities. But what is a good city is something every individual can define themselves and personally I would prefer to live in Malmö out of the big three since Malmö doesnt really feel like a big city but rather a very large small city which I really like.

I live in up North in Yorkshire, its why I'm confident in Bradford being a shit hole its nearby. I've been to Peterborough and yeah, its a bit of a dull place tbh, same for Stevenage which is just a concrete jungle, but the people there are usually pretty happy people which help it along.

It depends what you're after. If you just want a night out with a 50% chance of it becoming a felony, sure go for it! Despite being a seaside resort its surprisingly bleak, really good for a cheapish night out though. Would I suggest moving there? heck no.

Honestly, there is no city I've been in so far in my country which I consider unsafe. It is a pretty safe country with very rare street crime and petty thefts/pickpocketing are way rarer than 10-20 years ago. Unfortunately though, a lot of cities are neglected and a lot of people live in conditions which can't be considered qualitative at all. I can say that Bucharest and Constanta, while not the least attractive on this list, can definitely make room for improvement considering the fact that they are large cities and tourism in our country is treated like a joke...

Denmark is perfect! Places I've lived. Australia - Alice Springs - easily the worst city in a first world country that I've ever seen, Australian aboriginals are honestly uncivilized savages. Canada - Regina/Vancouver - Regina also has issues with natives, Vancouver has the worst homeless problem I've seen. USA - so big it's hard to say, possibly San Francisco, insanely expensive, homeless problem, crime problem, looks very nice but an awful city to live.

One of my clients had a mining operation, and told me they were forced to hire a certain amount of local aboriginals. They had a fleet of company vehicles and he said the aboriginals would sometimes just take the cars and never come back, or sometimes take them and drive drunk in the car and crash it. Other ones he said were allowed to just leave for weeks or months at a time from the job for cultural reasons, I can't remember what he called it " walking about" or something, and they were not allowed to fire them, just had to accept they might go missing for months on end. Sounds like a nightmare to work with them.

Hello guys! I'm planning on going on a road trip with my gf around Europe only using trains and I wanted to ask for advice and tips about the countries I'll go to. Starting from Switzerland we'll go to Munich ( Germany ) > Prague ( Czechia ) > Moravian region ( Czechia ) > Bratislava ( Slovakia ) > Kosice ( Slovakia ) > Warsaw ( Poland ) > Bialystok ( Poland ) > Kaunas ( Lithuania ) > Vilnius ( Lithuania ) > Riga ( Latvia ) > Livonian region ( Latvia ) > Tartu ( Estonia ) > Tallinn ( Estonia ) > Helsinki ( Finland ). As for the way back, we didn't decide yet. SO guys if you live around one of these places I would greatly appreciate it if you have any tips or advice about what to do, places of interest, food, and more! Thx everybody!

Old Tallinn is a nice place to visit, there are some good restaurants as well (ofc don't remember any by name). Can't give much advice about Helsinki either, but if you want to take another route back you can always take a train to Turku (some good restaurants and things to see there), and take a ferry to Stockholm, Sweden (there's also a ferry from Helsinki to Stockholm but Turku better haha). Turku Castle is one of the medieval settlements of Finland, an interesting place to visit if you're a fan of history. If you decide to come to Turku, I can give some recommendations. :D Another route could be through Finland to Tornio, cross the border to Sweden and head back downwards. I've only been there by car, so can't give much advice about the crossing. Anyways have a nice trip! Dm me if you want some tips about the Finland part of your trip :D

It’s a cool city if you love the homeless, traffic, and smog
2023-02-02 19:55

Homelessness is an issue for sure. The "stepping over needles/shit" is super exaggerated, but there are areas with a lot of tents and trash around. Most of the city is not like that, though. Traffic's bad here, I prefer transit/biking/walking to a lot of places I go regularly. The perfect weather makes that easy and pleasant. Smog is pretty much a non-issue these days, it was much worse 40 years ago. I'm surprised you didn't mention how expensive it is. That's honestly the worst thing about living here haha. It's worth it though for the amount of hiking, beaches, restaurants, and events, the perfect weather, and the opportunities available. It's cool if you don't like it, but LA genuinely is a good & beautiful place to live.

In my area, there's a town called Wyandanch, and it's notorious for high crime, low income, and past the point of return. I used to rehearse with a band in Wyandanch, it was an area I made sure to never stop in for any reason.

Rio, cus people treat the slums there like a tourist spot, as if being poor was something to be proud of, and that gives Brazil a bad rep, cus everybody thinks that Brazil is a huge slum while in fact only 6% of the Brazilian population live in "favelas".

I'd say Dundee would be top of the list, full of junkies, dumbass women (there's always that abusive male with the group, every night almost without fail) screaming at all hours, houses are cheap if you'd believe even the homeless in Scotland don't want those houses lmao.
