I used to have one and it is OP. The only shitty thing about it is when you break glass in the sink and it goes into the shredder, then it is a right nightmare.

tbh glass in the sink is a nightmare regardless, especially if it's thin glass, but yea I agree, things in the disposal that don't belong is never a good time

a pretty common appliance in the US is replacing the sink drain with a garbage disposal it's a little shredder that you can put stuff like egg shells, fruits, vegetables, and other soft foods into so it doesn't clog up the pipes

the idea behind the garbage disposal is to use that for food instead of the trash can because some food smells (like fish for example), garbage disposals don't

americans are lazy asses, episode number we've lost count if I have smelly food I just put in the trash bin (they even make them with lids that keeps the smell in) and then take the garbage out when i'm done. It takes all of 30 seconds.

It is like a sort of blender build into the drain on the kitchen sink. It lets blend biowaste and drain it a way just like dirty water.

I see your four and raise you with: - Bio waste - Plastic - Card board - Paper - General waste, like pizza boxes contaminated by food - Textile - Batteries - Chemicals, paint and so. - Glass - Drinking bottles for reuse - Metal - Electronics - Big household items ie. old furniture, washing machines... It is getting pretty crazy and there is talk of f.x. dividing plastic into two types. The amount of plastic you throw away is btw. shocking. It is all for the sake of the environment. Reusing materials, the bio stuff creates bio gas ie. fuel...

I don't think you have a special bin for washing machines in your house
2023-02-01 18:31
1 reply
Or course not. You just put them out at the right day and gets collected, there is a specific day every two weeks. As long as items are separated and either in big transparent bags, or if they are to big for bags like a washing machine they get picked up. The items collected like that are then dealt with by type by the people which pick them up ie. say an old wood table goes to the hating plant where it is burned*, the washing machine is separated for types of metal... *At high enough temperatures and smoke is filtered so say paint won't result in toxic smoke being released, instead it is just heating. Also some nutter made our latest plant into an artificial ski slope/climbing wall copenhill.dk/en
2023-02-01 21:24
You got all them in your flat? Or did you just mention all the different stuff that go separate ways when "done"? Like recycling yard, various public containers for certain stuff, etc?
2023-02-01 19:03
11 replies
Oh boy, no having all those in my apartment would get old real quick. The different "bins" are at the area adjacent to the apartment building where I live, no to long ago there was just bins for waste, paper, glass and cardboard only now there is all sorts. If I lived in a house it would be the same, except the bins would be smaller and/or compartmentalized. In my flat instead of having just the normal small waste bin with a plastic bag you toss when filled, there now still that, one for plastic, one for metal and one for bio waste - like it use to be that I could have sort of a corner under the sink for the waste bin only it is now pretty much the whole cupboard under the sink taken up. You pay a deposit for the reuse bottles and cans depending on size, but it is up 50c so those I keep in a huge bag in the cellar since it ads up to actual money. There is also a recycling yard one can go to, but that is more like if you're getting rid of lots or doing some sort of DIY building project since else all the bins and the large item pick up system is sufficient.

Yeah basically the same here. Not convinced of the system because it's so inconsequential in parts, but most likely better to throw everything together.

There has been some debating here also and it is not yet implemented in every part of our country. Some argue, that is better to let machines do the sorting centrally instead of those many types of separate waste being picked up - there is lots of logistics and specially made garbage vans taking care of it all. However there is also work going on where industries are called upon using less packaging, making products easier to disassemble when they are disposed and so on. What ever we do it is urgent that we do things better, not only is there the climate change thing there is also a real crisis in bio-diversity. Likely you hard about the decline in number of bees, sadly it turns out it is much worse and it may become not only a sort of nature problem it could also become a food growing issue.

I definitely think that we need to change things, I just don't think it's a consumer issue as much as politics (driven by industry) is making us believe. Our personal impact is relatively small compared to industries, traffic, meat,..
2023-02-01 21:45

Yes and no. Don't underestimate the power we have as consumers. Of course we can do little as individuals, but it doesn't take that many of us to make a fuss and make shops or manufacturers hear us. Say you write a note to a chain of shops and complain or suggest something, since not many people do that they take notice - now they will maybe not admit to it directly but they do. The reason is that they know, if one guy puts in the effort to write them then likely there is many more which consider it fruitless to write or maybe feel just a little bit less about the subject. Depending on what you ask, it may be something the choose to ignore only say you organize just a few people then it is a different matter. Note I am not saying we as consumers can make everything change just like that, but since most give up and do nothing this means if we do something it can have an effect. So be it putting in a word at a shop, sending a mail to customer service, reaching out to a politician...give it a go.
2023-02-01 22:16

Oh you misunderstood me there a bit. I'm sure the consumers have a lot of power theoretically. Imagine what would happen if we started to not eat meat for one single day a week or decided to not use our cars on Saturday. That would be deficits in the billions. I meant to the environment the individual consumer has close to zero impact compared to industry and that's why this is where we should make cuts.
2023-02-01 22:28

Not sure, let me try again. I agree that industry is where the real impacts happen and can be changed, however industry will do what we as consumers demand. It won't be like from one day to the next, but look for example on how electric cars is taking over - if people wasn't buying them then Tesla would have died quickly and traditional car companies would not all be putting out electric cars.

Then again those things are mostly pushed through politics by lobbyists. The political system would need a serious overhaul as well. Overpaid politicians who work towards their retirement fonds obv care little to nothing about... Anything tbh. Sure a party indicates a certain direction of politics but in the grand scheme the bigger ones don't differ a lot.

A garbage disposal unit (also known as a waste disposal unit, garbage disposer, garburator etc.) is a device, usually electrically powered, installed under a kitchen sink between the sink's drain and the trap. The disposal unit shreds food waste into pieces small enough—generally less than 2 mm (0.079 in) in diameter—to pass through plumbing.[1] Cool to know

I remember seeing for the first time as a kid in a movie called small soldiers and I just thought that it seemed very dangerous lol
2023-02-03 12:33
No, don't push trash in the sink. Do some proper sorting.
2023-02-03 12:40
Nope. Government trash company comes few times(i think 4) a week and collect all trash. We have free insurance, hospitals, universities, insulin, zero mass shootings, zero school shootings, zero gang shootings etc. Jokes aside, garbage disposal seems very useless. I just sort my trash like plastics, glass, wet stuff like potato peel leftovers etc, put it in the trashcans outside and thats it. I am finishing house that i've build and I was thinking about it but its literally useless/pointless to have so i ignored the idea
