Game Price
Wales Dai_Bach
So it's 2023, games have become easier to make, there is no physical shipping required anymore really, or at least not even as close to as much that was needed over a decade ago. So why have games almost doubled in price and halved in quality? Are you impressed by this in 2023? youtu.be/BtyBjOW8sGY youtu.be/i6skG7ykCiY I don't understand how this generic garbage can be appealing to anyone especially at almost triple the price of newly released top tier indie titles.

Hogwarts Legacy looks great I do agree they are overpricing it and asking too much money from what they call "skins"

Why do you think games have become easier to make??? As for the physical thing, the cost of that was really minute - what costs money was the money for the re-seller and there is still a re-seller since Steam isn't free.
2023-02-01 18:28
Yes the pricing is a little ridiculous, luckily sales exist.

But this happened before lockdowns which was one of the main causes of the most recent recession other than the like fuel crisis the economy was in a pretty decent position generally across the west relatively speaking, the hike to $69.99 price on year of release is far higher than the average of 49.99 which has been the case for things for the 4 decades gaming has existed for. even in the 2008 recession this didn't happen.

in a healthy economy there is a small amount of inflation each and every year, but over long periods it adds up. and this got nothing to do with the recent spike in inflation

No it's definitely got more to do with greed especially with the new models these publishers and studios are using, battlepasses, loot crates, first day dlc, micro-dlc, skins, etc. It's about getting as much money for as little work as possible and it shows in all the shit that is being put out by these large companies. And again I know it doesn't as it went into effect before the recent recession hit they just did it out of nowhere as a shot in the dark to see if they can continue doing it. The new fucking Saints row, yes that one that was the biggest pile of shit ever, was $69.99 on release.

That is a different topic entirely. My point is that if you paid 60 dollar for a AAA game 15 years ago, it is completely normal that AAA games would cost you 70 dollar nowadays with expected inflation, it is probably even too cheap if you compare purchasing power of today and 15 years ago

I agree that that is a good excuse for why they are doing it, but it isn't the reason they are doing it. It's entirely based on profitability and making more money it has nothing to do with the cost of making these games going up, the video game market is ridiculously profitable, it's so profitable you can rerelease games with a touch to the graphics and every idiot comes running. It has nothing to do with inflation that's why it didn't happen for two decades. They could literally still charge $49.99 for a game and make ridiculous profit on it, Obviously it's already been stated multiple times in this thread basically "don't like it don't buy it" and "supply and demand" which are absolutely valid positions to hold but it doesn't invalidate my position which is that the price has increased on average and the quality has dropped on average from the Triple A video game market. And that's just the base price ignoring all the other ways they milk money from whales. I now think that in the same way in like phones and shit a large percentage of what you pay for something is paying for the brand I would say that now applies to video games, the cost is completely down to the brand being greedy and thinking more of itself, Saints row being a great example. But at least the market is broadening so now we don't have to just accept bad triple A titles when there is an indie market that dwarfs the triple A market entirely.

You keep missing the whole point dude. The price of games has decreased considering inflation compared to the average product you buy in the supermarket or hardware store. And saying that they make insane profits anyway is naive and false, many studios have to cut devs because they are in trouble. And the low price point for games that didnt change for a long time was a problem for many studios actually. I agree that the quality of games is lower than it should be, but thats a different topic.

just wait a year for its first sale. by that point most of the launch day bugs will be patched as well

I don't think it will be a year until it's on sale I'm more just unsure why so many new games and so many large studios have just resorted to making terrible generic games.

Saint's row went on sale possibly about 2 weeks after release need for speed unbound halved in price almost instantly because it was so bad.
2023-02-01 19:05
even better then
2023-02-01 19:15
Prices for games have been consistent for over 10 years which is already impressive. 70usd is quite lot for a game you don't like, so just don't buy unless you know you're gonna like it. Also, it's only the standard for AAA games on the newest consoles. Still haven't gotten the shift for AA games targetting this price. Games nowadays go on sale faster than ever. Just don't be such a consoomer who needs product at day 1. Hell, many AAA games hit 15-30% sales within 1-4 months. And finally, there have ALWAYS been 'generic games' released at the highest possible price points for literally every single console. You just don't remember/hear about them because they weren't that good.

I'm more concerned about the quality of these games being released at these prices, the price has doubled but the quality has halved, these games are trash, and it seems to be a western thing.

Quality for games have always wildly varied. It actually matters a lot less now because the internet makes information so much more transmittable. When you bought some unknown game back in the SNES days, you hope it's good based off the boxart. Plenty of games that cost 90usd+ (due to being on expensive cartridges) that were complete duds. The only thing that's really changed for consumers is a ~17% price increase for AAA game (not accounting for inflation) across 15+ years. Development cycles for modern games are much longer than they used to be though which isn't as much of a factor due to oversaturation.

I stopped buying games at full price. Not only do I save money by waiting for Steam sale 6 months later, but I also don't spend 60 EUR on something Cyberpunk turned out to be at release lmfao. The only game I may buy at full price when it gets released is GTA VI for now. (Expecting inflation doesn't go higher, because then I'd need the money for food instead of games)

f0rspoken rating metacritic.com/game/playstation-5/forspo.. 3.5 Not fair to take this game as a proof, since it's garbage. There have been many games worth 80€ like Elden Ring or Final Fantasy 7 Remake.

Saints row did it too, need for speed did it, those shitty "insert sport name" "insert year" games have done it, Assassins creed, More and more games are doing it but the games are like absolute garbage in terms of their quality.
