about to buy graphic card
 |
Argentina n1ss
tomorrow morning I'm buying second hand 6600xt. I'm not really sure because many of these sellers have used it to mine crypto, should I risk it or save up more for a new one?

Buy it. Crypto mining doesnt matter

+1 trust him. And if not trust Linus, he also came forward to say that used GPU's are mostly ok

Linus Tech Tips just made a video about buying used and mined GPUs. Look at it, I think you will be fine. Especially, if you can take it in your hands or try it out on the seller's system.

Does crypto mining even change anything?

its running at 100% usage 24/7, and hardware has a limited lifespan, so you decide from that

But if it stays inside average temps and it's stable load, it's worst to hit highs and lows all the time while gaming because voltage keeps moving up and down. Obviously you don't play 24/7 but is not gonna be that far away as it seems, btw, any 2nd hand gpu has it's risk.

What he is saying he mining crypto doesnt flactuate the voltage values as much as gaming, so if you game like 12h/7d p/ week, its worse then mining crypto 24/7. Also its mostly the fans that go bad when you mine crypto, so what most people do is change the fans and thermal past and you have a almost new graphics card
2023-02-09 00:20
There's no evidence that mining reduces lifespan. It's only PR from Nvidia because Nvidia wants to kill used market.... There's an argument that running same temps for 24/7 is orders of magnitude better than switching +-20 degrees ever 5 minutes. So that's even a win for mining, crypto has a very steady load which does cause thermal variations as much as gaming does. Yes, there's a risk with used stuff, but there are high rated sellers who sell good stuff.

theres no argument, it either is or isnt. you can buy a card thats been passed around like a ***** or use a new one that works for sure. the argument is whether the reduction in lifespan matters, how long do you plan on keeping it. and go from there

You sound like a very educated and a smart person with setting such rules and using extremely accurate comparison. GPU does not wear out from use, it does not work like it. At all.

lol well said. Especially since most miners have very well ventilated rooms with highly controlled temperatures on every card. Ofc if you buy from a noob miner who just did it for fun without those controls it might be different or damaging, but you can and should always ask beforehand from the seller (although they can lie, it's always worth to at least ask because there is some truth in the world somewhere)

Most reputable websites offer buyer protection, meaning that if GPU is DOA or dies shortly after - you get your money back. Ebay simply takes the money away from the seller's account and gives it back to the buyer. Most miners will run GPU's at lower voltage because less electricity means less expenses. That means cards will work on very low temperatures. But even by default, I tried with my GPU - it steadies out at like 68 degrees in my garage and it mines like that day and night. Now.... what reduces lifespan of cards is humidity which causes oxidation, can be an issue if rigs are in a weird places. But at the same time if your average student has their PC in their rented room - then PC is in a humid area considering kitchen is a part of that room. So it's not like there's no risk, but it's rather low because cards can take years of abuse before they die. Some refuse to die, my rendering PC has a HD 7750 still rocking (CPU rendering, GPU is just there to have a monitor output). With current prices it's more than worth it to go for a used one. Using reputable websites that have buyer's protection makes your money safe - just make sure to plug in the card and run all the tests you can - like a full hour of stress testing at least. Even better, some benchmark on the loop because those have things that task different parts of the GPU and there's load differences that stresses the GPU more than constant 100%. When buying a used card there's only an asterisk of maybe needing to spend 10 bucks for replacement fans. That's it. Haven't bought a new GPU my self since 2005.

I bought it yesterday, they told me the previous owner did not use it for mining. I'll be running tests but all along it works fine. Its sealed so it has not been opened for repairs. Also I have 6 month warranty, guess I can trust them.

Its working well, no problems overall. I haven't overclocked it since I'm not an expert on computers and don't want to mess up my shit by accident. Runs sons of the forest and RDR2 +60fps

That's good to hear! I honestly felt the same way as well with overclocking / undervolting, You hear about it and think it's uber scary, but in truth it's relatively simple and quite safe as long as you just use msi afterburner and watch a lot of videos to learn. I've had my 2070 for a few years now and only like 4-5 months ago I went into learning more about undervolting and overclocking, set up a profile and I now have 10%+ performance and much much lower temps! Using heaven benchmark (between 3 benchmarks) pre undervolt / oc settings I had 88-90 fps average, 9-10 fps lows, 156-160 fps max 1440p ultra with upwards of 63c temps average like 57-59 after spending a few days testing and optimizing I now get 98-100 fps average, 33-35 fps lows, with 170-176 max fps with a max of 58c temps and average 53-55c. Not an insane performance increase but the lower temps feels super nice especially considering I only have 45-50% fan speed at those temps
2023-02-26 16:18
only logical take found
2023-02-09 02:10
Yes, it does, depends for how long it was used (3 months or a year and a half in this case)
2023-02-08 09:53
It depends on the warranty. The place I bought my second hand gpu from allegedly performs tests to make sure they are working correctly, and they still have a decent enough warranty after buying from them. If they have a shit warranty or you're just buying it from a random person I would not take the risk.

you should test it thoroughly, basically all that matters. when i was getting my 1080 guy tried to dodge, i basically brought my pc disassembled to his crib and did the thing there. you need to load memory to check for artifacts, occt gpu test is good + classic furmark/superposition should do the deal. crypto can cripple the card yes depends on the miner obviously but all of them are very responsible, right?

if there is warranty you still have to be cautious but generally nothing to worry about. I don't have a specific link, say check YouTube for that on "how to benchmark used gpu"

Your carried your PC in parts to the trader to check the GPU you wanted to buy? Damniozo, not all gamers are lazy, some will move mountains for a couple of additional FPS

if there are not a big price gap go for the one with warranty mining cards are ok if they are so cheap
2023-02-08 00:37
imagine a gpu like a car. mining cards are highway only: constant load, constant temp, trimmed for max efficency and (hopefully) well maintained as you nake money with it and want to keep making money (5years + runtime is not uncommon) gaming used cards are City cars: high load variation, high temp variation, high power draw and most people dont clean their pc regularly and even smoke/vape in front of it generally mining cards are the better and more lookes after cards

If a miner knew what he was doing they are not tortured at all since they undervolt them to consume less power. I do not know how it works in Argentina but if you can check the guys reputation and it is fine you should be clear to go
2023-02-09 19:28
It all depends how intense was the use. Some people buy new generation as soon as it's in the stores and sells their old card. I bought second hand RTX 3090. It did not looked like it was used to mine crypto, stress tested it and all seemed normal. So far 2 months running without any issue.
2023-02-09 19:32
it's all good mens but check the capacitors and any other burnt damage signs, if there isn't any go for it ps apply good thermal paste cause i doubt there is any left
2023-02-09 19:38
Worst case scenario you'll have to replace thermal pad s if the temperature is too high
