Once again Finland has been ranked #1 on Happiness and once again we are #2. worldhappiness.report/ worldhappiness.report/ed/2023/world-happ.. But while I like to win, it is fine since A. The Finish people are good people and B. it is not really a contest it is much more important that the scores are a indication that makes people of the world think of what matters. So people, where is your country on the list and do you think your politicians should do something to improve life in your country? Personally I think we can do better here in Denmark, but also that surpassing Finland will be difficult as long as they organize this: airguitarworldchampionships.com/en/home/

Stats like that can rarely be completely trusted since countries count those statistics in different ways, like some include accidental deaths by overdose and shit.. and some even include suicide attempts, while others don't. Yet it's one of the few where Italy looks good, so I can see why you seem to care so much.

We don't need to express it constantly. Happiness is a lot more than just going around with a smile on your face and being all sunshine. I am happy I am living in a country where my kids are safe and I don't have to worry that much about tomorrow. There are a lot of things to be happy about.

I doubt many Swedes are actually affected, except for perhaps seeing the headlines and thinking wtf. The people I know living on the other end of the bridge ie. next to Copenhagen but in Sweden all seem okay with life. Seeing Israel in the #4 spot was however a surprise to me, it seems likely the current troubling government and its move towards totalitarianism is so recent the data doesn't that into account - however one would also think that just the guilt of keeping a people in camps should cause unhappiness.

It must be a colossal pride to be coming from the happiest or second-happiest country in the world. That's great indeed. I had to scroll all the way down to not even see it there, at all. It matters, despite how happy I may be, the others' happiness also affect mine and I would like to see more happy faces. But still make sure you're happy yourself first and only then look elsewhere

To be clear happiness does not mean what you think it does here. Finland’s ranking is because people generally have their needs met due to the robust welfare system, so they are satisfied. But that’s not the very consistent because the USA is above Germany, France, and UK in happiness.

No 51, politicians should be doing a lot of things, but they never will. The only thing that would make this country happier in the long run is improving education so people can get better wages, because they produce more in the industry. Will never happen, because investing in education is longer term than 4 years... I try to do my part by going back to uni and teaching students as well as I can in my free time, but it's a drop in the sea. The reason many people in Hungary are unhappy is because half the country is living paycheck to paycheck. Most people always have that feeling of existential dread. Things are OK now, but what will happen if I'm fired? Can I still feed my kids if food prices increase another 50%? (They will.) Thankfully I can still provide for myself and my GF, so I can be happy, but I know for most people this is not the case unfortunately.

My best friend is Hungarian and that's exactly how he sees it too.. I think Hungary was fairly lucky that their transition from socialism to capitalism didn't destroy the country in the way many other countries were completely fucked, but it's still far from ideal. Education is definitely key, but if it makes you feel any better, as a Finn I can tell you Hungary isn't the only country that ignores the long term benefits of it, as our right wing governments have made severe cuts to education and it's just getting worse.
2023-03-20 11:07

Education is ignored everywhere, because its benefits are long term. The average politician has no incentive to invest in something that won't show returns within the next 4-5 years. This shortsightedness could be the downfall of democracy, because voters aren't as conscious and well informed as they should be for the system to work well.

I somewhat disagree. There is correlation, but it's not the exact same thing. For example I am very content with my life. I am working my dream job, I live in a nice area, I am physically healthy, etc etc etc nothing to complain about. But I am not happy. I would rate my happiness 5/10 at maximum.
2023-03-20 11:43

Fair enough. I suppose it is really about how you think of it, plus maybe also what sort of expectations you have which really must a lot to do with culture, upbringing, background and so on. Like for example if your parents are very successful, then maybe you would also feel you should have the same or more success in order to be doing okay and in contrast lets say your parents was doing "just" okay it may take less to feel like a success.
2023-03-20 11:59
2 replies
Your own expectations are a huge part of that you're correct and culture plays a part in you setting those expectations as you mentioned. The point about being born into a successful family is a good one. One of the main reasons for my own lack of happiness currently has been the failure to meet certain expectations I had set for myself and concern over certain cultural developments in the western countries that make me very pessimistic about the future of civilization. Of course in my own mind I believe these issues are valid issues to be unhappy about, but at the end of the day things like this are mostly someone's own preference and I could wake up tomorrow and change my thinking completely and my happiness would be close to perfect. Your comment was insightful one which is rare these days so that helped me regain some hope for civilization so thanks for helping me get closer to 6/10 happiness.

Happy to help. I find it fruitful to exchange views on things and it interesting to learn from those that live in foreign lands or lead different lives. Thank you for sharing. I also have worries and a big one is climate change, on what it is and will do to nature, what challenges it will bring - especially to the more vulnerable nations that have little margins for sustaining life and what happens when mass migration becomes a thing. Plus of course also about the rising sea level, as a Dane I know we are one of the countries where this will become a problem BIG TIME. However I do also have hope that democracies are strong and that technology can deal with many challenges, only it won't be cheap or easy. Another worry is what AI will bring with regards to changes. On the one hand I think amazing things will happen, but I also see lots of jobs being replaced by computers and not that many new ones created to manage the AI. This then makes me wonder - what about all those jobs lost (and will my friends or I be on the loosing side).

maybe its just how do you define happiness. yes finnish ppl arent extra positive smiling etc and they dont show their feelings to others which may make it look like theyre really depressed to ppl looking from outside but yeah. and i dont know if its the accent or smth that make them "sound" depressed. noticed sometimes in CS when a finn gives info some ppl are like "u sound so depressed" which i dont kinda understand why. like is he supposed to laugh and sound happy meanwhile giving info where the enemies are or smth.

Yeah you said it perfectly, most people are very close minded about topics like this. It's like they forget different countries have different cultures. Also another funny thing is when people give their opinion on other countries/cultures based on their experiences in a video game :D As if most people playing videogames aren't socially awkward nerds.
2023-03-20 13:01
Finnish people in general show very little emotion even if they are happy (especially in public), so that's probably why so many from the outside think it sounds weird Finland is ranked 1st in the happiness ranking every year. Also many Finns think people from other countries are happier since they show much more emotion so we also find it weird we are ranked the happiest when we look constantly depressed compared to them lol

Happiness isn't dancing in the streets and making a lot of noice. Happiness is planning for your future and not having to consider factors like, will you get by with minimum wage, or will you get shot in the streets by a law enforcement officer.
2023-03-21 06:32
maybe this is a list of the most delusional people, not the happiest? I mean, how can you even measure happiness? There is no standard for happiness - where one feels happy, other can feel shitty. If it's based on people voting if they are happy or not, then it would most definitely be very delusional

2023-03-20 11:33
I mean.. its hltv you know, as long as you put X vs Y country with stats, everyone will believe it but they will never think about how the study was made Apparently its made with the cantril scale, you have to answer questions and rate them from 0 to 10 Like "Are you happy with ur life from 0 to 10?" " idk ehmmm 8" "Ok your country is 6th!"
2023-03-20 11:40

"Are you happy with ur life from 0 to 10?" This in itself is delusional. All tests where people have to answer about themselves are pretty false, because most people answer what they would like it to be, not what it actually is. Same as in personality tests "what would you do in this scenario" - most people answer what they would like to do but not what they would actually do.

Yes, and this is why wonderful places like Afganistan and Lebanon are actually top#10 countries because people answer wrong. You have a scientifically good point and we should read the list from bottom to top. But, seriously you are missing the point. Being top#1 or top#2 or even top#10 in this list is not the point. All those top#10 countries could be placed in any order in top10, but the fact is all those countries are less failed countries than many other countries. There are no perfect countries, but some countries are just less failed than other for people to live their day to day ordinary lives. Period.

2023-03-20 12:36
#39, just because in our culture it's normal to not show much emotion or be loud or anything like that it doesn't mean we are all just depressed. Like we've seen famous people like Kimi Räikkönen barely even show a little smile after winning a F1 race, but I'm sure he is still happy winning and there are many other emotionless Finns like him. Edit. Also to add, Finns don't really care what others (strangers) think about them and that includes not caring if people see them as "depressed" or anything like that based of their facial expressions.

"Happiness" is measured how people feel they can control their own life (available opportunities), how they feel their family and children have a chance for a good future (no need to stress too much about this if one just wants to use their available opportunities) and how friends/family around them is felt like. And low corruption and low "randomized bureaucracy per face value" is another big part of it. But is is true that in public places in Finland it is acceptable to "enjoy the silence" also and people take other persons "invisible private zone" seriously. It is considered rude if a total stranger infiltrates this invisible private zone without at first starting a discussion from a distant and this way sort of given a permission to enter the private invisible zone around us.

We have sauna, beer and laituri, and a seven month winter that makes us appreciate summer all the more. Pretty good internet access, pure/high quality ingredients in grocery stores, amazing nature all around, very good human rights situation compared to shit holes that still exist for some reason (no matter what some idiots think, you ARE allowed to say stupid shit - being considered an idiot for saying it is just the natural consequence, you won't be put in jail), universal healthcare, free schools + school meals, and still the default assumption is that if someone is supposed to do something, they are trustworthy and will do it in stead of rip you off only thinking of themselves (disregarding politicians, but nothing big really ever changes anyway so status quo remains). Also everyone talking about how we "look depressed" because we're not talking and shouting all the time, lmao. I'll take happiness over excessive social gesturing anytime.

Northern people see strangers as strangers, not part of their "inner circle" with whom you would share your happiness or feelings in general. Having a blank expression as default is just that - it's blank, it's not negativity or lack of happiness. Also #102, imagine trying to summarize happiness and you would focus on things like "smiling at strangers" lmao

Yes I have, several times. For me, smiling at strangers and talking to everyone does not equal happiness in life. There are some linguistics into this as well, in English "happiness" is pretty much equal to "being happy", which can be defined by unimportant things like smiling and so on. Surely everyone knows the difference between being happy in a moment and being happy in their lives in general, but still. The Finnish word for this is more like a combination of happiness and satisfaction, being content with your life as a whole - the absence of severe problems plays a big part.

I think here lies the problem. Language. So Finns score so highly on happiness because the word means different things. I don’t consider security, wealth etc as happiness but instead content.

What I mean is, when the questionnaire says "how happy are you?" do Finns interpret that as "content" ? In the UK we don't have to worry about health, food or beds either but we aren't overly keen to describe ourselves as happy.

We don't have shit weather (current week excluded). We have weather, as in it is not the same everyday however we do not have Hurricanes, Tornadoes, crazy heatwaves or freak winter storms. Our winters are more wet and dark than they are winter wonderland, but our spring and summer compensates and then some - and no one lives more than 30 miles from a beach. We also don't have mass shootings everyday or every decade for that matter, we don't have death by cop either or people shooting at our cops as something even remotely regular. Half our politicians aren't for sale, we don't have an ex-president that lies every time he talks, health care is universal so people aren't slaves to their job for fear of loosing their insurance... oh and everybody here gets 5 weeks paid vacation (minimum, most have 6 or 7 weeks).

LOL Nice try at trolling, but it has to be a little real to work. But for fun, lets look at a your claims. - Depressing, the suicide rate in the US is like double of ours - Cold. Lots of places in the US are way colder in the winter. - Racist. You're the country of the KKK, the people that still celebrate the confederate flag... and had segregation laws until 1970 in some states. - Boring. If boring means no school shootings, no children shooting siblings or their parents, honest politicians, no corruption... then yes we are boring. Then again we work 37h a week and have 5-6 weeks paid vacation, so it is not working that makes us boring. - 50% tax. Yes, and for that we get a lot. Once you factor in health insurance, cost of education and more then the bottom line is the same. - Small homes. Quality over quantity. We live in a homes that are well made and not some giant wooden box that is easy blown away. We build our summer houses in wood, not the real ones we call homes. - Antisocial. Just wrong. - Alcoholic. Wrong again. And btw. tells us about the opioid crisis. - The 3x moving thing, the US has 60 times more people than Denmark and 229 times the land mass so that only 3x more people move to the US isn't exactly a compliment for you guys.

I agree it's not a particularly exciting place to live, but that's why you go on holidays and so on. Having lived in the UK for 13 years and Germany for 4 years, both these places seemed at least 10 years behind in terms of quality of life. I love going to Italy, for example, for the culture, food and weather but I definitely wouldn't want to reside there and often start missing regular life after about a week.

Depends where you live I guess, some parts of the UK are culturally miles behind and get less spend by the government, whilst some areas of London are richer than most places in the world. I lived in Brighton for 11 years and London for two years. My memories mostly consist of dirty streets, homeless people, fat/disabled people with a massive drinking culture. I also remember when I first moved there in 2002, 0.5Mb internet had just arrived whereas in Sweden it was standard to have at least 10Mb and in a lot of places 100/10 was available. I will say, however, that English people are a lot more outgoing and social which has rubbed off on me so I do find it hard to socialise with swedish people, especially those that aren't from the south of sweden who are just super awkward to be around.

2023-03-20 12:46
Also another reason us nordics love living here is the ease of living. We get a unique personal number that we use for EVERYTHING, whereas it's to do banking, make dentist appointments, declarations etc. The beaurocratic side is super easy and manageble and we almost never have to do physical appointments or fill out paperwork. It's completely different to other european countries. There are barely any apartments and people only live in houses. When my friend from England comes over to Sweden he's always shocked that there are only apartments in the city.

Being a tourist somewhere for a month vs living and raising a family for the next 10-20 years are two different things. Our family has traveled (as a tourist) to numerous countries and even living abroad for few years (in Spain when dad was there as EU official). As a tourist any place is nice and especially Spain or Thailand etc. But, living in Spain (going to school, going to work, getting along with bureaucracy, calling an electrician or plumber to do something) is not that wonderful compared to Finland (or any other Nordic country). Here things just work and make the every day living from day to day easy. In Spain after a year you started to see how bad many things were (not people, but the society and infrastructure and poor vs rich people gap, inequality, how families had to stress out if they children can have a good future etc).
2023-03-20 13:34
That's because you don't live here? The experience for visitors and tourists is vastly different from actually having a life somewhere and should never be a standard for happiness in my opinion. Systems in the Nordic countries make it easy for you to conduct you life (mostly) however you want to regardless of your ability or desire to make lots of money and I find that far more important for "happiness" than smiling or talking to strangers.

Top#1 or Top#2 or even Top#5 on this list is pretty irrelevant as long the country is in those top positions. The fact is all those countries are good places to live even for an ordinary citizen and not just for a privileged inner circle. That's the lesson to learn here. In Finland the "happiness factor" relates to how people feel they all have equal chance to succeed (whatever it is) in life and raise their family and provide a good future for their children. The life is not an everyday struggle to survive from day to day like in those countries in bottom places

How do you define welfare state? In all Nordic countries (Finland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Iceland) it is defined as a stable society and governance system combined with a capitalistic free market. But, to have a stable society and governance is not the same as ultra-capitalistic system with "strongest takes it all" system like in many other countries in bottom places. Welfare system in Nordic countries is not "free money for everyone". If you don't do your part then don't expect much luxury in your life either, but you won't end up being homeless and starvation to death unless you really really want it. But the Nordic system cannot work unless the country and society is low in corruption also. Countries with severe corruption problem and "tribal ruling system" (=favoring their own people over expertise) is doomed to struggle in a macro level.
2023-03-20 13:16

Nah, the Nordic system works primarily due to the fact that Nordic countries have small populations and alot of natural resources. Plus having a good quality of life =/= being happy, that should be a quality of life rank not a happiness rank, since Finland is one of the countries with one the highest depression rate.

well, according to 2022-2023 WHO stats depression rate in Brazil is higher than in Finland. But researches are wondering here why countries like in Nordic area rank in average level here and not in lowest bucket even when living in Nordic is seen as "happy" and easy going? And why countries like Romania are in the list as being "least depressed". One explanation is that the efficient healthcare system can spot and classify these symptoms more efficiently, but in other countries depression is not seen as a something healthcare should take care of.

Bro why u even trying to argue against facts, Finland is top 5 in EU, of countries by suicide rate (something that can actually be measured), i mean even science says that without enough sun exposure, your serotonin levels can dip, making your depressed. Plus i love how you say that Brazil has higher depression rate, then in the next paragraph argues that in Finland depression rate is higher due to an efficient healthcare system, does that mean that we have an efficient healthcare system?

Mexicans happy bcs they can easily set up shop in the US. Portuguese not happy cus there's no quality of life and wages are a joke when put against cost of life you either come from a well-established family, go through college, and get lucky enough to know someone who can land you a good job, or you just live from paycheck to paycheck until retirement comes and you cannot even afford rent Jokes aside, yes we have very low crime rates but quality of life is abysmal, nevertheless I've never been to mexico and I can imagine its the same there, if not worse
2023-03-20 15:48
1 reply
I've never been to Mexico or Portugal myself but even if I would have been, there's only so much a person who just visits a country can see and understand.. Even living there for few years don't paint the "real" picture of how it really is, since being born there will always be different. What you said about being born into a wealthier class or middle one is true in many countries, my country is no exception. The thing is most European countries do have free college education, so as long as you want to study and give it your best, you're able to achieve many things without being born or raised in a middle or upper class. Quick google search told me that Mexican public colleges can charge from 378$ up to like 900$ per year - which is not that bad but definitely is not free. I didn't want to say that just because of a lower crime rate citizens of Portugal should be happier or lead a more positive way of life. But I refuse to believe that Mexico is ranked 20th places above Portugal in "happiness" simply due to the fact there are well known issues inside of that country and I believe if we'd compare them more precisely - mainly the poverty aspect, we'd get a better perspective on things. So many things are being taken out of context, not that it would be easy to take everything into consideration, but that's why I don't like these stat lists. They're mostly based on some flawed information and then presented as factual. Thanks for your insight tho!

Anyone who has met a Finn knows this is total bullshit. They are so dark and depressed. This is the problem with factoring in quality of life measurements into a happiness rating. You can live in an absolute shithole and be happy. Look at india, some of the happiest people in the world live there. Anyone who has travelled throughout North America and the Nordic countries knows we’re way happier in NA.

If you take vitamin d every day the winter weather shouldn’t impact your happiness. I’m just as happy during our 6 month winter than I am in the summer… you just get to enjoy a different set of activities in the winter. If anything the hot and humid weather in the summer makes me a lil grumpy

How can Canada be #13? I’ve travelled throughout Europe and nowhere (even in Scandinavia) did I see remotely as many outwardly happy people smiling and laughing as I do here in Canada. Is it all the immigrants we’re bringing in pulling us down? I’m genuinely pretty confused by this ranking. People in Finland seemed particularly melancholy to me. I can understand Denmark #2 they seemed quite happy.

49th We're good, we just need to improve education, health, public security, basic sanitation, average income, gang activity and widespread corruption. But apart from that we're fine! Jokes aside, brazilians are very smiling and easy going in general, but I feel it's more about a momentary enthusiasm, not a deep and genuine satisfaction for one's life.

finland is happiest country because the people are constantly unhappy I know this sounds contradictory but this also means that if there are problems then we tend to look toward solving them and are never satisfied, compare to USA for example where they think everything they do is the greatest even if its dogshit

but really bro Nordic countries, they are colder, people are more serious and they can also get depressed more easily, high suicide rates and things like that. That kind of thing is contradictory, that's why it is based on quality of life, in other studies they put Japan as the happiest country, but almost always it goes in the quality of life of citizens, countries with less poverty, social problems I believe that everywhere, within a country, you will find happy people, sad people, things like that
2023-03-20 22:24

The suicide rate thing is a myth, the rate is higher in the US for example and Japan is on par as well (a little lower than Finland, but higher than ours) What makes people in this part of the world happy is: - Work -life balance - High level of trust - No corruption and low crime - Good social welfare - High social mobility (The American dream is real here) - Low poverty rate and those that are poor still get to live decent, their children get access to education... - Good economy Japan is an amazing country, but their work-life balance sucks and they have a real problem with to few children being born so an increasingly big part of the population is elderly (same problem as most of the Western world only way worse). indexmundi.com/g/r.aspx?v=25 worldometers.info/world-population/japan.. This shows it really well: statista.com/statistics/270087/age-distr..
