New monitor suggestion

Help me out, I'm still stuck on 120hz. Time for an upgrade, was thinking about BenQ EX240, but what is this weird 165hz spot???

buy benk 360hz

Depends on your tasks I guess. I'm also on 120 hz 10+ y.o. monitor. Plan to buy something like 1440p 165 hz IPS because I rarely play any games nowadays. But if I played CS:GO a lot I'd go for 240 hz probably.

I'm sure 240hz is great but it has double the cost of my budget, not worth imho

I don't think 120 hz -> 144-165 hz upgrade worth it either... Unless you're going for 1440p or 2160p display.

If you are going to play cs daily and you want to get better a 240hz will be great help to you. I recommend XL2546K just for gaming purposes. If you want a more chill one with beautiful colors i will go with a aoc one. Yea but now it's just depends what you use it for.

Do you have at least 165 fps for a 165 Hz monitor? If you have 120 fps - there's no sense in upgrading your monitor to something that you won't get anyway, i.e. 165 updates of the game world per second. The same goes for 240 and whatever else Hz.

Yep I'd struggle to keep those 240fps you're right, 165 would be a good compromise for my pc

I'm sure you won't get a proper answer here. To know what I mean - enter any lobby, any game server, ask if anybody has a 144-240 Hz monitor and then ask how they chose it. The vast majority will not give you any useful information, it will be just something like "I read a review or asked on a forum blablabla". There's websites with monitor reviews, google something like "best 165 hz monitor" and check them out.
2023-04-01 09:58
It doesn't work like that. Ideally you'd want 165+ fps for 165 hz monitor, 240+ fps for 240 hz monitor, etc. But you'd still notice the difference and advantage of 240 hz monitor even if you're getting 165+ fps. Same for single player games where you could have only 50-60 fps, 240 hz would still be better than 120 hz, for example. And in case of CS:GO you want 200+ fps always anyway.

Would be better at what exactly? Monitors can't show more frames than graphic cards have sent to them. And the main advantage of any high-frequency monitor is that you can see more updates of your enemies' positions when they're moving thus you have more time to react. And what will you react to with your 165 fps on a 240 Hz monitor better than you would on a 165 Hz monitor? You will get an update for what you see only every 1000 ms / 165 = 6 ms, and it will be 6 ms no matter if it's a 165 Hz monitor or a 9999 Hz monitor, because guess what - your monitor shows what your GPU sends to it, it can't make up anything on its own. So when you see some cool number on rtings, e.g. input lag - make sure you check if it's input lag with the number of fps YOU have. Otherwise there could be no advantage at all for you from buying that super cool monitor that your GPU can't even fully load. Because "lower input lag" is not always the case when it comes to using your high frequency monitor at lower framerates. That's why no, you wouldn't still notice the difference, but you might in some cases with some monitors, to know what exatly cases - check proper reviews.

You're kidding, right? Hz - how many times per second a monitor updates what it shows. fps - how many updates of a picture your GPU sends to a monitor. When you have 60 fps, your 144 Hz monitor updates the picture 144 times per second, but shows only 60 frames per second, meaning that each frame is shown for at least 16.7 ms instead of 6.9 ms. You can tell me about blur and ghosting and whatever else, but people buy high-frequency monitors to see a smooth movement and have more time to react to that movement. youtu.be/pUvx81C4bgs Everything else is just a nice bonus, but in a fast-paced game when you either aim at your enemy that ADADADADs at a surprisingly high speed and freaking hits you surprisingly well while doing so, or you miss and get killed, the main thing is to see as many of that moving piece of shit positions as possible to be able to properly react. And you're suggesting to spend money on a monitor rather than a better GPU, I mean, you're kidding? First you need enough fps, then you need a good enough monitor.

Having 60 fps at 240 hz means that your 240 hz monitor will update 4 times (60*4=240). #24 Even with 60 fps at 240 hz you will still get better experience than with 60 fps at 60 hz or 60 fps at 120 hz. No one said you don't need good fps, read #21 more carefully instead of writing walls of text without understanding what I wrote in my comments.

> Having 60 fps at 240 hz means that your 240 hz monitor will update 4 times Yeah, every 4 updates (Herz) it will show the exact same frame because it can show only what your GPU sends to it. > Even with 60 fps at 240 hz you will still get better experience than with 60 fps at 60 hz or 60 fps at 120 hz. This is correct. But given a choice, I'm sure it's better to have 240 fps and 120 Hz than vice versa, at least in terms of what you get for the money spent. That's why, if you have let's say 120 fps and 120 Hz - better upgrade your GPU first and only then go buy a monitor that matches your new fps level.

No point buying 165 hz monitor instead of 240 hz just because you only get 165+ fps in CS:GO. Why? Because 120 fps isn't good in CS:GO and 165 fps isn't good neither. I'd say 200+ is minimal acceptable, but I'd aim for 300+ at least.

If given a choice - high fps on a lower freq monitor or high freq monitor on lower fps - go for the first one, because even on let's say 120 Hz and 400 fps your monitor will show 120 of the most up-to-date frames out of those 400 per second, so you will see more up-to-date world and react to it. Again - in games like CS what matters the most is how much updated your enemies' positions are in your screen, so you react to it better, and if there's more updates - you have more time to react, for that you need high freq and matching or better framerates.

#0 didn't say anything about upgrading PC, your choice example is a bit irrelevant. Just check yourself any singleplayer game with 60 fps cap at 60 hz, 120 hz and 240 hz. If you don't notice the difference perhaps you don't need high refresh monitor at all... For competitive games you need as much fps as possible, for CS:GO specifically I'd say AT LEAST stable 200+. Of course there is no point of getting high freq monitor when your fps is shit. From #18 I'd suggest OP to get better PC first, but we aren't talking about PC upgrade vs monitor upgrade here. If he wants to upgrade monitor first, for CS:GO I'd still get 240 hz monitor even if his current PC can only handle 165+ fps.

> we aren't talking about PC upgrade vs monitor upgrade here People may make mistakes when they don't know what's better for them at the moment, and when they ask for help - I suppose we should make proper suggestions rather than choose between 2 mediocre choices. As far as I understand - the OP has at least 165 fps, but doesn't have at least 240 fps, that's why it looks better to buy a good 165 Hz monitor rather than a 240 Hz one.

Right, I'd suggest to upgrade PC first and get 300+ fps at least and then think about getting new monitor.
