+1 Tolkien for me is just number 1, I grew up with the Hobbit and LOTR and was so intrigued when i read his other works about middle earth. The witcher series is also great, way better than the Netflix adaptation!
2023-05-23 16:31
The Witcher saga is exceptionally good! As a teenager I mostly used to read fantasy, and Witcher is the best written saga together with Song of ice and fire, in my opinion. I think Witcher didn't get more recognition because English translation was... questionable. More on this topic here reddit.com/r/netflixwitcher/comments/dlj.. Translators play such an important role, and it's often not taking as seriously as it should.

Exactly the same, JRR is the best, and I love the Witcher

Ah, ok. In short, people from the PUA community seem to think that Eyes Wide Shut is the greatest PUA film of all time. I love Neil Strauss - The Game changed my life - and I think that Eyes Wide Shut is decent film, but I simply do not see the connection.

Have not read The Castle, but will put it on my list. Thanks. Other than The Trial, I have only read short stories by him, which I was not too impressed by. And, of course, Metamorphosis, which is sensational. I have a strange relationship with The Trial: I have read it twice and both times in one sitting. Picked up the book, read until I fell asleep, woke up and finished where I left off. No other book has engrossed me this much. Have you played Disco Elysium? I am playing it now for the first time and it is very, very good.

100% recommend The Castle. The Trial is amazing. I travelled alone to Prague and reread the book there for full immersion) I haven't played that game, no. Why do you ask?

Did you have some absinthe too for the full immersion? :) I will pick up a copy of The Castle next time I walk past my local Waterstones, so probably on Wednesday. I mentioned Disco Elysium because I only started playing it recently even though it's been out for a few years now, but playing it really feels like reading a great classic. I think of it more as a book than as a game - and the writing is really, really good. There is an element of pride in there too, because I think that this game is a masterpiece and it was made in Estonia. Various publications have called it the greatest video game ever made. I am playing it now and it is making me think and reflect in a way I have not since reading Crime and Punishment. If you get into the story, it is very heavy and melancholic, which resonates with us Estonians, but may not be up everyone else's alley. I highly recommend it.

I think it will very difficult for a game like this to have mass appeal but, if you like Kafka, you will like DE. The quality of the voice acting is unprecedented, too. Let me know what you think of Evrart Claire. I cannot think of another character in video game history that is as well acted and crafted as this guy.

Just finished Disco Elysium. A great game. Unlike anything else I've ever played. The whole concept of the inner dialogue, putting points into psychological aspects was brilliant. The writing was generally amazing. Very clever dialogues and ideas throughout the entire game. Evrart was a very well written character, just like you mentioned. I also liked Kim and Measurehead. Overall an amazing gaming experience. I hope they make a sequel

thx for the book recommandations btw. I don't understand why Remco retired. Rules did not forbig to race with covid, he had no symptoms and was obviously quite in a good shape because he just won a time trial (maybe with a smaller gap that you would expect, but still). They had 1 easy week before going into that final hard week so i think he could have gave it a shot. If he does the tour he will get destroyed I think. Actually he never won a pro race against top riders if you think about it. Pogacar & Vingegaard with a perfect preparation are I think way better. It's very surprising that Lefevre says it's useless that Remco does the vuelta before the already won it once and it would require a hard training period

Yeah there is no rule but it poses a danger for his health to race w covid even w no symptoms. studies show that an important exercise while under covid is dangerous thats why. he was allowed yesterday to go back to biking. he did win against top riders but never pogacar on a week race thats all he beat all the other. in the mountains ye they re teams are better that undeniable but he can win a tt thats still some experience ig. i didnt see the interview where lefevre said that sorry but that s quite weird its still a grand tour. Anyways for tdf he does have the time to get a bit of prep in before and he did some good prep before giro its not impossible. He is a great rider the problem to me is his team, bcs on the giro they supposedly had his best team and they were bad so yeah we ll see.

Lefevre said he won't do TdF because if he loses everybody "will come at him with a bazooka". So it's ok if Remco doesn't do well but when its alaphilippe he whines and disrepects him a lot Tell me 1 remco win against the best riders that is not a time trial. By the best riders I mean Pogacar, VDP, Van Aert, Vingegaard

Well I mean it’s Lefèvre he s a bit weird and I think he s paying alaphilipe a lot and wants him to leave so that’s why. But yeah now that the Wolfpack isn’t performing bcs they pay remco a ton he s critizing Julian a lot which is meh. Plus he s building teams more so towards grand tour then classic which doesn’t help Julian so it kinda of hypocritical even if Julian hasn’t been great for a little while now.

And 1 is pretty easy he won the world championship.
2023-05-24 22:39

In the world championships he ended up in a 50+ riders breakaway with 5 a min gap, in the end he only had to beat Fulgsang. It was a terrible mistake from the other teams to let this break away go, by the time they realized Remco was in there the gap was too big and break away had too many riders for the peloton to catch them. Remco never dropped anyone of the best current riders in his career so far. The best rider he ever dropped is Roglic earlier this year in Vuelta a Burgos, but in my opinion Roglic is not one of the best anymore. Maybe he wouldn't even have made it in the top 5 of the giro if Remco & Tao were still here

Nice men, keep it up😎👍 I also recommend some of the lesser known King works like From a Buick 8 and Insomnia. Honestly at this point I feel like if he sneezed on a paper I would read it, just unbelievable prose AND combined with his imagination = haven't closed a book of his once and felt I wasted my time. Buick 8 especially, I enjoyed. Read it the first time when I was in high school for one of those stupid papers and have re-read it almost every year since. Honestly not sure why but it is always a joy.

I almost have opposite reaction) for me Dostoyevsky is very heavy and dramatic. Some of his books also feel extremely padded.. Like he writes unnecessarily long and winding storylines.. For me Tolstoy is also heavy, but easier and more fun to read. Just my opinion)

Sometimes, yes. But I know that in those times writers would often sell their works to literary magazines. They were usually paid based of volume, so it would be economically beneficial to add superfluous words and details

i think it's about 3500 pages across 7 books. Similar type of length to Harry Potter or game of thrones. If you treat it as one 3500 page book then it seems like a lot, but if you see it as 7 normal-length books then well... Most people have read at least 7 books. Im 3/7 done with it. Alternating between reading a book of this and something else in between rather than reading all 7 straight through. I'm mostly enjoying it, he's very good at satire/social comedy, the book has all these characters who are mainly all pretentious snobs and social climbers who go to parties all the time. But he was also completely unhinged insane so the parts where he writes in depth about love/relationships are kinda hard to stomach (incel/simp type of guy basically). Id recommend trying the first one and if you don't like it then don't carry on.

I’ve read the Eragon series and I enjoyed it, didn’t like the ending very much, but we’ll see what happens in the new book. I really loved the Rirya Revelations by Michael J. Sullivan and I will read the prequel series at some point as well. The Kingkiller Chronicle by Patrick Rothfuss might be the best I’ve read, but sadly it will most likely never be finished. Robin Hobb’s Farseer trilogy has been on my reading list for a while, same goes for Six of Crows. Haven’t started them yet though.

I'm currently rereading Det tredje riket by Karl-Ove Knausgård. So good! Thank you Norway. I find it a little difficult to say who my favorite author is. Periodically I read more easy-to-digest books (fantasy and sci fi), while at other times I read somewhat "heavier" books (Dorstovjevski, Kafka, Steinbeck). But a small favorite is Hjalmar Söderberg, he does a lot with short texts.

yeah right but your comment on fiction books is barely true, you re not always reading to learn. Reading to enjoy a story is what make the most sales in the world Even if you dislike those books, they are as important as films, video games, theatrical pieces in our society And the comment about the 16 yo is just pointless, again fictions are the most selling books each year But bragging about reading them is just dumb yeah
2023-05-24 20:09

yeah and most of the time its either children stories (like harry potter or lotr) or straight up porn (50 shades etc) and a huge majority is read by women. + theres literally thousands of low quality books aka romance or detective, ofc they sell millions but that in no way means they are good lol. marvel also sells millions, does it stop being children trash?

Calling lotr a children story is a huge mistake, reading it one time is something but the depht of his work is something else. Again, using 2 or 3 exemples to sum up fiction as a whole gender is straight up snobbery, you have works like Isaac Asimov's "Robots" that are actually not just well-written but also premonitory and actually use scientific reasearches of his time to prophesy what's may be happening next and what drifts can happened if things get out of hands. The American and French armies have called on science fiction novelists to imagine scenarios of total war, some of which are now classified as defence secrets and considered particularly realistic. I do not summarize fantasy just by this example, and of course some works are simply published for money and glory, but there are also many uses other than entertainment to a genre that has existed for a long time. To summarize and conclude by comparing an entire genre of literature to Marvel is a big mistake and even if you don't recognize it, in no way for me is fantasy literature a waste of time, whether it is reading, writing or discussing. Have a nice evening

Currently reading The Warlord Chronicles by Bernard Cornwell. Right now slowly on book 2 Enemy of God. Amazing author and amazing books, perhaps one of the best books I've ever read. Bernard is also famous for the books The Last Kingdom (TV-show TLK is based on the books) George R.R Martin is actually a big fan of Cornwell's books as well and has praised his skill in writing battle scenes in particular. Recommend it.

Currently reading: a hungarian book about the biggest blunders of all wars Favorite of all time: Our Ancestors by the GOAT Italo Calvino. 10/10 would recommend. The storylines might seem dumb/absurd at first but they are quite thought-provoking, and entertaining at the same time.

Oh yeah it's a great book, but for me it's probably not on the same level as the other Witcher books, Although the chapter between Yen and Ciri, and the other one with Zoltan's company are what makes the whole book stand out, I love it.

I'm currently reading the "Remembrance of Earth's Past" trilogy. I'm on the final book titled "Death's End". So far it is one of the best post-2000 science fiction books I have read. Favorite writers are Timothe Fombelle or whatever (he's French, so I have no idea) and Stanislaw Lem. EDIT: I'm also reading "Pro Git" and "Serious Python (No Starch Press)", but those are less interesting.
