Just got to 1000 elo on chess.com blitz after playing for 5-6 months and I have a question to good players, what's your routine like? Is there anything you do in particular to improve? Also how do I improve faster OTB because I'm losing to lower rated players and can't see as many tactics as I do online. Are there any free resources online to study except youtube and chessable

I'm 1400 in rapid but stopped playing it because I enjoy blitz more and I feel like I see more positions and improve faster that way I should mention that I play 5 min blitz, not 3 so it's not like I struggle with time

personnally i don't enjoy time formats below 15+10 if you like blitz then play it but #7 is probably how you are best gonna improve Puzzles makes you learn new tactics patterns, while OTB classical games get burnt into your memory because of how long you get to think on specific positions, and that's the best way to learn from your mistakes i think

If you can't calculate all moves possible then how do you know which are the best moves? You don't, that's why machines are demolishing grandmasters because they're able to compute more moves and know the actual "best" ones or at least better ones than the human counterparts
2023-05-11 14:45
1 reply
because most moves dont make sense in a position. so there is only a couple moves you have to calculate
2023-05-11 14:48
For <1800 ELO Train your tactics over and over again. Do it on lichess if you don't want to pay prenium on chess.com In the end at this level 90% of games are won thanks to a tactic / someone losing a piece at some point Find 2 or 3 openings and play them all the time, learn 5/6 moves of theory but you don't need more than that. Pick openings that don't have 1000 variations unlike the sicilian for example tactic tactic tactic tactic
2023-05-11 14:25

I have premium on chess.com and started doing puzzles recently, right now sitting at 1800 rating and. For black I actually play sicilian and enjoy it quite a lot. For white I play e4 and aim for the scotch, against d4 I play kings indian
2023-05-11 14:30
1 reply
Sicilian is fun but theory is very hard to master, there are a lot of lines to remember and mistakes are costly. Rating in puzzles is fucked up, for exemple my brother has 1500 ELO in 15min+10 games and 2300 in puzzles. If you really want to get better, you should focus on puzzles until you reach 2500 in puzzles. I know it's not exciting but griding chess is hard work and not that fun imo. But hey it's so satisfying to see ELO improvements and gj reaching 1000, thats already better than 80/85% players on the platform!

he's lying if you reach 1800 in a year it means you are highly motivated and in love with the game + a freaking genius if you are highly motivated + in love with the game, and grinded at least 5 hours a day for 365 days, you don't quit chess because suddenly you are bored of it

Would you really consider someone a genius at 1800 after a year? I mean it's unlikely to be 1800 after a year but not impossible I think
2023-05-11 15:33
2 replies
If you start on the 01/01 not knowing how a knight moves and reach 1800 by 31/12 yes I think you are a genius (considering you have a normal life : a job, a social life, etc.) you need thousands of games to reach 1800. Keep in mind its exponentially difficult to gain ELO. The gap between 1600 and 1800 is way bigger than 1400-1600 which is way bigger than 1400-1200, etc.

improving in chess gets exponentially harder. 900 to 1000 is easy 1000 to 1100 is harder 1100 to 1200 is way harder 1200 to 1300 is waaaay harder and it goes on im playing for 2.5 years, and im 1400 on chess.com
2023-05-11 15:44
nope it doesn't mean any of those. I was little bit in love with chess but I was driven by uselessness in covid and also had bet against someone
2023-05-11 15:37
5 replies
You don't get driven by uselessness to reach 1800 You need to study chess hours everyday, I doubt you can't go 6hours of chess everyday if you don't care about the game. Even when you love chess it's hard to do that. Even with 1500 hours of chess in a year its super hard to reach 1800
2023-05-11 15:43

I put I guess 1000 hours and a 500 more for study in whole year. I don't think you need to study chess. You need to study to get over 2000 not at 1800.

2023-05-12 12:20

Yeah but what was your level as a child ? This changes everything, it's really nothing like starting from scratch. From not knowing anything about chess to being 1000 ELO that's quite a lot of hours already Same happened to my brother, he did a 20 year break, started to play when covid came and in a month or two he had 1400 ELO. When you learn things as a child it's easy to get them back decades later. I skied when I was 10 and 11 years old, took classes and all that. I did a break of 15 years, skied last january and did a black slope on my first day even tho i wanted to sign up in the beginners group
2023-05-12 14:37
2 replies
I didn't have a level as a child. My big brother taught me how the pieces are allowed to move. I had no idea about whether white or black gets to move first, openings nor did i know how the pieces were supposed to be set up on the board. I just picked it up instantly when i started last year

Now I have 1417 chess.com/member/almsant tbh, I don't do anything to trainning, I played chess 7 years ago, but I returned last year. I can say the practice makes you improve a lot. In one month I could gain 400 points for my rating, with chesstempo.com, I think is the best site to learn the mid/late game.

2023-05-11 15:56
chessable and similar things are trash, all you need to do is analyze your games. as white you need to build a repertoire of attacking ideas and be able to defend an equal position if black stops your ideas. as black you need to defend from white's attacking ideas until you reach equality, then try to form your own attacking ideas. an attacking idea is a threat on a king, a tactic such as a fork, a threat to capture a heavy piece (rook or queen) to gain tempo, or a threat of getting a particular piece to a particular square. basically, chess is all about stopping your opponent from getting their pieces to particular squares in such a way that you also are not jeopardizing your own development and losing tempo. for example, in the italian game a straightforward way to defend as black is to play h6 but you lag in development doing that. the best move is to play nc6 and go into the giuoco piano so that you can castle in time (within tempo), equalizing. you've basically stopped the knight from getting to b4 by removing the threat entirely through castling.
