L's death wasn't the real ending, it was the beginning imo. one of the main points of Death Note was that Kira wasn't fighting against L, but against the ideology of justice. even if he had beaten Near and Mellow in the finale, who knows if some O and P, "Oliver" and "Paul" wouldn't appear to take him down. i think names were chosen intentionally because alphabetical order goes like "L, M, N". once Kira got L killed, Mellow and Near appeared to investigate him.
I think the whole point was that no matter how smart Yagami was, he would never become "god" because eventually he'd slip up, and there would always be people to take him down.
and that ending scene were Yagami is dying, lying on the stairs, L appears in his imagination for a few seconds in front of him but his face is covered by some metal piece, implying that Yagami was fighting against ideology and not just some human with face.
