How come there's never been an Italian CS team or any Italian CS players with any sort of relevancy? I'm not baiting in genuinely curious. Is it a cultural thing?

Second part is bait but the first part I can believe I hear most places didn't have internal plumbing till the mid 60s so I could understand if pc gaming is not a big part of their culture

second part is absolutely not bait, italians have two things in life besides work: girls and riding vespa (at least the ones I know)
2023-09-22 14:51
this unironically. also PC gaming in Italy just not that popular besides parts of Northern Italy.

Most of the players who won something at a national level had s1mple's ego, thinking that everything should be handed out to them. Nobody wants to actually tryhard to become good at the game, we'll see with the CS2 release if something will change but I highly doubt it.

Glad to talk to a fellow W:ET player ! Have you seen that there was LAN that happened this year? A new one got announced in Poland in 2024 !

Same! Or just spending the whole night spamming "6o6 / med / hv srv / no polack" on IRC to play fewgames. I'm sad that there is no legacy to this game genre, OW is a bit like this but not even close to how great RtCW & ET were. Resulting in having no public to play anymore, too many oldies around with family or work obligations :\

Having even 1 T1 player out of a community requires huge numbers of players to dedicate a lot of time and efforts to the game. Out of this huge mass you'll get only 1 or 2 players able to reach T1. Some exceptions exist but having a small and very casual playerbase undermine your chances by a lot, because other countries will have these hardcore and numerous playerbase (think about Brazil, Ukraine, Russia and scandinavian countries as example, a lot of people grind the game hard and it's very common for them, meanwhile here in Italy someone grinding a videogame is seen as a freak, out of society)

well, Italia is in Europe and is rich enough country. They have almost all it takes to have at least 1 relevant player. Similar countries near Italia: - Spain has mixwell, sunpayus and some decent teams - Portugal has fox and some decent teams - Austria has S3NSEY, who is meh, but at least something - Switzerland has Maniac and that guy from BNE Italia is the biggest wasted potential in terms of CS representation in Europe.

You don't need CS if you live in itally ffs. The country is a true gem for trips and basically walking anywhere around is beautiful.
2023-09-22 09:09
1. the weather is good, people hang outside 2. Pc gaming is dead, everybody has consoles and since playing alone sucks you just buy a console 3. Football is the sport of italy, play football, watch football. No time for esports or other things. 4. Nobody play cs. Really, not in my school not in my uni. Ive never met a random dude that play cs. Again if nobody plays a game you dont play it too, being alone sucks. 5. Boomer mentality, this is a old country. Gaming = loser wasting time, in the eyes of everybody. 6. Bad connection outside big cities. In rome i had 1gb here i have 100mb (1 year ago i had 7 without optical fiber = 90 ping) 7. No role models, high level scene, history in cs. With who you are creating a team? There are like 5 4k elo players. So basically cs is just not the game in italy and gaming is dead in general. We have other interests cooking, going out for girls, football. Not everybody ofc, i hate football. 90% for sure tho.

Accurate, even in big cities (Roma in my case) in some parts the connection is bad because sometimes for historical buildings they can't put the fiber internet connection so have like 100ping average, but i'm actually road to global, i'm SMFC right now, after i become global i will switch to faceit. The biggest problem i can say is the fact there is so much beautiful girls, so we prefer to go outside and see something real than play with tryharders. Another reason is that the italians get annoyed fast, in my case if i find russians that griefing and spread toxicity , i just uninstall the game. Also the 90% of people playing Fifa. If some italians want to add me on steam to play, respond to this comment with your friend code. :D

Once I made a long thread explaining all of it but it got 404'd even tho it was not offensive lol I don't know what happened, so I'll try to summarize here (in order of importance): 1) Football: football is the absolute dominant hobby among the teenagers and it is one of the most effective ways to make new friends or engage with friends you've lost contact with (because you go to different schools, for example). So people either go play football for the city team or in an academy or on the streets. 2) Mindset: It may sound simplistic, but italian people have the wrong mindset at least when it comes to online competition. I don't know why but during these years I felt like italian players have always this necessity to highlight how strong they are, how they don't win because everybody hacks, how they "could be tier1 IF ONLY THEY WANT TO" and stuff related. This toxic mindset of course prevent you to get actually better at the game, since you are forced to think that you're already the best and that there's some sort of plot for which you can't reach the top. 3) Internet: Now internet in Italy is ok, but until 5/6 years ago it was not a priority for the government, so in 2015 we were almost all stuck with freaking ADSL 20Mb with copper wires. 4) Fear of being made fun of: I don't know if it is or it has been the same in your country, but in Italy playing videogames until some years ago was seen among the young generation as a thing for the losers, expecially if they were "online" and competition was involved. This, even though at the end everybody played videogames (could have been FIFA, COD, other popular games). THE END
2023-09-22 09:30

Just come over here friend and call me how you want. I would be sitting there playing CS laughing at you knowing that I am over chasing girls phase because I have quality and loving relationship lasting years. And that my intensive routine every day in the gym or running routine connected with eating clean, not drinking, sleeping well clears your probably casual football routine. But in reality no one plays CS 24/7 though

You can't host gaming events in Italy, it's considered as gambling so it cut the grass right away for local events to make the community grow. Beside that, Italy has a great Quake player: Vengeur, Stermy was great in Q3/QL too. I think they have good starcraft 2 player too. Apparently, they shine in 1v1 games

Not even close. The gambling thing was related to LAN cafes and it all started from an entrepreneur that has in his hands most of the slot machines and arcades in Italy, then everything was solved.

Console gaming is more popular in Italy and in the competitive scene they play more FIFA and COD. CS is not that popular of a game, or professional gaming in general is not something they do, although there are plenty of streamers but not CS. As mentioned by others, internet is shockingly bad as well in most places.
