Is there something wrong with my settings/PC?

So with 1920x1080, everything high and 4x MSAA, I get average 244fps ingame, but with 640x480, everything lowest possible and 0x antialiasing, I get average 293. Shouldn't I get more fps with the lowest settings? I have fps_max 999, I've set mat_queue_mode to 2 from video.txt and autoexec.cfg, my GPU driver settings are all at default (except stretched resolution and Saturation/Digital Vibrance at max), I have -threads 4 & -high on launch options.

Okay well thanks for letting me know. Can't overclock it because motherboard isn't really optimal for it and it is the core locked version anyways.

Theoretically you can. The BCLK (The "basic clock"... No need to go deeper here) is 100 MHz by default. Most motherboards can handle 102-105 MHz so you could technically overclock the CPU by upping the BCLK. However I wouldn't recommend that. It'll overclock everything on the mainboard (USB-Ports, PCIe-lanes and so on included) and you'll run into instability issues very fast. What I personally think: Why would you need more than 244 FPS anyways? There's no 250Hz screen (even that 240Hz EIZO one is just a 120Hz monitor that puts a black frame in between every "real" frame).

I don't need more than 244 FPS, I just felt like I had some setting wrong somewhere and wasn't getting the most out of my PC.

Nah it's just the CPU going to it's limits. You know... The CPU (very simplified) basically makes the "blueprints" for the GPU (which then takes a pencil and does the drawing) so it doesn't really matter what resolution you play on. That only affects the GPU.

I didn't know that, thanks once again :D

Settings that affect the CPU the most should be any form of particle effects, shadows, physics... If you go back to 1920x1080 and just put these settings: Shadow Quality: low Effect Detail: low Shaders: low Motion Blur: disabled You should already approach the 290 FPS you talked about when lowering everything. Maybe you'll reach 270-280.

I'll try that!

Thanks man! With 1920x1080, everything at lowest except for Textures at high and 4x MSAA, I got 279 average FPS! Thanks for your help, I'll keep with these settings!

not with that cpu tho. 2600k would do better???

Aren't they the same except 2600k isn't locked?
2015-01-10 15:15
Exactly. It also depends on your motherboard though. Overclocking a K-CPU through the CPU-multiplier only works on motherboards with Z-chipset (Z68 or Z77 for Sandy Bridge CPUs). Also you should consider that overclocking your CPU will increase wear within the CPU and on the mainboard, it'll make it reach higher temps and in case of insufficient voltage destabilize your computer (=lots of bluescreens). When you have way too low voltage, it won't even start anymore.

Well this fps amount is enough for me, so I won't start overclocking anything yet. Thanks for your help!

Oh I forgot to mention something tho... The 2600k is an i7 while your 2500 is an i5 so the i7 will have SMT over your CPU (more performance in multicore situations). The single cores are the same though except for minor differences (L3 cache size 6MB -> 8MB).

Yeah sry, then theres something wierdo, I have with my 2500k (3,3ghz compared to your 3,4ghz) and gtx 660 without overclocking ~250fps on 128tick server and 200 on matchmaking

It's because there's no bottlenecking going on with your setup.
