ESEA caught in Bitcoin scam

It has been discovered that ESEA has been using its game client as a bitcoin miner to raise money without the consent of the users.

Last night, a user created a forum thread on ESEA's website exposing what could be considered as a scam as it was discovered that the ESEA client was being used as a bitcoin miner when the users were not playing any game.

Bitcoin (BTC) is a digital currency that can be transferred through any computer or smartphone without an intermediate financial institution and that can be exchanged for "real" money.

ESEA chief Eric "lpkane" Thunberg stated that a bitcoin miner had been coded into the client as some sort of an April Fools' joke but noted that it was only released by accident as they decided "it wasn't worth the potential drama" after running some tests on admin accounts.

Thunberg claimed the Bitcoin miner had been running for only 48 hours, which had earned ESEA some $280.

However, just hours later Thunberg commented on this issue again and revealed that ESEA had raised $3,602.21 since April 14th, which was when the miner was released.

As expected, animosity has escalated quickly in the community, with several users admitting that they have cancelled their subscriptions after unknowingly being involved in a scheme that allowed ESEA to raise money.

Some people have also complained about higher GPU usage, Blue Screens of Death and virus alerts over the past few days while running ESEA's client.

Thunberg added that as an apology, all money raised through the Bitcoin miner will be going to the prize pot of ESEA season 14 and that a free month's subscription code has been given to all Premium users.

O.O

2013-05-01 14:50
Yeah, the fact that they are trying to say it was an 'accident' or 'joke' is utter bullshit. THEY WERE STEALING. The only reason they stopped was because they got caught. It's utterly disgraceful that some people actually are forgiving them for this. You don't accidentally code a bitcoin miner, implement it into the client, then spread it to all users and use the bitcoin wallet. Claiming it was a joke is just a ridiculous excuse. Thieves.

Hows cevo going anyway? It was the meeting point for the scum/hackers of the e-sports scene. How are the imporvements on their anti cheat?
2013-05-01 15:38
I don't know much about them but they relaunched recently and will start their new seasons in every game they feature soon. The homepage looks nice and the recent mapping contest was really cool. The #1 map will be selected as one of the official maps for the first pro season: cevo.com/custom/vote/cevo-gamebanana-csg..
2013-05-01 15:46
Sadly that didnt answered my question. You make promotion for a league you dont play in? They made their "comeback" half a year ago claiming their anti cheat is better.
2013-05-01 15:47
lol? I stated that I don't know much about it and I think no one does as their first seasons after relaunch didn't even start yet? And why shouldn't I say that it looks nice so far as it's the only thing I can see yet? Give them a chance, lol.

Did anyone's GPU really die because of this? Would be interested... But what a retarded excuse that "april fools" thing is...even thinking about doing something like that without letting the customers know, tells a lot about the company.
2013-05-01 14:55
=(
2013-05-01 14:58
My GPU always ran at 41, and my CPU under 45. Now lately it my GPU was running much higher and up to 55 with 100% power of fan and CPU at 60%. I checked if there were dust somewhere, opened the CPU chip and it seemed like it had been using too much electricity that some part was..."burned"? now it's on repair...!
2013-05-01 14:58
55 degrees Celcius is nowhere near enough to damage your GPU. You need about 100C to actually cause damage.
2013-05-01 15:43
"running much higher and up to 55 with 100% power of fan" I manually put it to 100% while most of the time before I knew this, the fan control was going on "dynamic" - means it was going much higher than 55.
2013-05-01 15:44
Your GPU won't outright "die" unless it was already bad (dust in heatsink?) to begin with. The problem is that your hardware can start overheating while you're away from your PC (the mining didn't start until the client was idle for 10 minutes). Most systems automatically shut down before permanent damage occurs. I was wondering why my fans were spinning full force these past weeks after I returned from watching TV, but this explains a lot :P
2013-05-01 14:58
My old 9600GT did , I could never think about this, until now :(
2013-05-01 15:37
Two weeks ago my Radeon HD4890 a $300+ card when I got it, fried with no explanation. I kept smelling something burning coming from my computer and I had to replace my video card with a Geforce GTX 550ti... which went on to BSOD my pc over and over again. I've since replaced that card with a lower power Radeon 6750 and the problem stopped... Now I know why this happened. Fuck you Eric Thunberg... Calling lawyers in Rhode Island this morning.

2013-05-01 14:57
I don't get it. how was i scammed?
2013-05-01 14:57
they were using your PC to gain over $3.5k
2013-05-01 14:58
ESEA secretly added a bitcoin miner to the ESEA client (illegal), whenever you left your computer idle or didn't use your graphics card for 10 minutes, the bitcoin miner would take over and start using your GFX at 100% to mine. Basically ESEA added a virus that used your hardware to farm them money. For you that meant increased electricity bills and reduced life expectancy for the hardware. This lead to lots of issues for users as well, problems with overheating and BSOD's. They would have kept going but they got caught, now they are trying to say it was a 'joke'.
2013-05-01 15:02
How exactly does this work? How would that earn them any money?
2013-05-01 15:24
you can earn bitcoin by helping bitcoin to verify transactions. They have no admin department to do this and they offer rewards to "miners" - people that help check these transactions by solving mathematic problems. ESEA were using idle users pcs to help bitcoin verify transactions and earn rewards. The reward was 3000 or so bitcoins that can be converted to real dollars. Lawsuit inc for sure. Any young lawyer in here should be well up for this.
2013-05-01 16:03
29 bitcoins they made to be exact and if you look at the price market they sold it it's 3600/29= 124 dollars for 1 bitcoin !
2013-05-01 18:06
Uhh, basic explanation; First of all, bitcoins is an virtual currency without a central bank, meaning it doesn't exist in the real world, it only exists on the internet. The way to 'mine' bitcoins is to use computer hardware to extract/decode a block of data to generate a digital number that can be traded in for a block of bitcoins. This is usually very resource intensive and takes a lot out of your computer, that's why it's usually done in 'pools', meaning groups of people/computers working together. ESEA created an unwilling 'pool' out of their users by hiding a bitcoin miner in the client, trying to benefit from all the processing power at their fingertips. When users left their GPU idle for 10 minutes the bitcoin miner would kick in and start working on the data, using the graphics card to decode it. Because it's very intensive work this also lead to issues with graphics card overheating and users reporting PC crashes. Now they were caught red-handed and are trying to come up with excuses.
2013-05-01 16:04
"a digital number that can be traded in for a block of bitcoins." What is the digital number used for?
2013-05-01 19:36
well that explains my pc crashing twice... fuckers

2013-05-01 14:59
This is completely unacceptable for a league as ESEA. They lost all credit they had from me. They will have to seriously do something bigger than a free month subscription to redeem themselves. I don't know what they plan to do next, but I'll just uninstall their client right way, and I don't think I'll ever play again on their servers.
2013-05-01 15:00
Same here.
2013-05-01 15:01
Same
2013-05-02 10:40
this is ridiculous... i don't have esea client and i don't know how much of the gpu power they used BUT this is very irresponsible. 1. gpu gets hotter while mining. depending on the settings it can get a lot hotter than while playing. 2. it uses up more electricity. sure, maybe not that expensive but the whole idea of esea using someone's power and electricity for their own gain is ridiculous.
2013-05-01 15:01
I think it's one of the best April fools they could have come up with... Like you said indeed it will become much hotter then while playing games because when your GPU gets stuck at +- 95%upto100% usage when it's a too old gpu it will drop your fps drastically (making it impossible to play). It might fry some other components or the gfx itself. For sure it will use some watts like high end ones can use 250+ watts extra. That's nothing compared to a microwave or whatever xD

2013-05-01 16:06
i wasn't considered a backup for back2back even though i was on their roster for a few seasons
2013-05-01 16:14
I take that flimsy excuse as a yes, you are in fact a backup for lurking and working and yes, that does in fact make you a member of the team. According to esea you joined the roster Apr 26th, 2013, meaning it was a recent and conscious decision.
2013-05-01 16:36
i don't ever expect to play any cs:go. i'm friends with all their players so they asked if i can join the roster as a backup in case something happens. i did for them during back2back in 1.6 (while i was playing for winfakt) and i never played for them then either. don't get so wrapped up over the word "backup", it's just a formality.
2013-05-01 16:40
what do you even care, btw i don't think he changed his opinion. There are some players who disliked the game too out there but they still play the game because they wanna stay into the scene.

Glad I never got on ESEA. I'd never pay all that money just to play on ESEA servers. Ridiculous people even did that.
2013-05-01 15:32
changes will be made within the company i believe... its a great service and its much better than classic competitive Torbull is an extremely successful business man because hes a responsible, smart guy... the initial statement he released (i believe) was sufficient to say that he was ashamed and embarrassed on another note, i will cancel my ESEA premium until "lpkane" is no longer in charge
2013-05-01 20:06
yeah i am not premium nor will i ever be again after this, very very shady.. didnt like the way lpkane treated people before this anyways.. plus how is putting it into league play [BOLD]FAIR to those who arent in the league?...

Broken trust Broken GPU's Money made from others without their consent Spreading false information to make everything look better. How do they repay the community? A free month of ESEA, woho! And even better: They use the fraud money to increase the prize pool, which in a way is fucking marketing for ESEA. So this is actually only benefiting them as 99% of the affected people aren't eligible to play in this tournament.
2013-05-01 15:35
Im glad i realised how bad ESEA client was before this. Bought a months subscription to see what it was like, spent a week getting "no steam logon" error, same as everyone else on servers i played on. Wasnt going to wait around for them to fix it, glad i uninstalled. Also the anti cheat sucks. Clearly not the brightest people.
2013-05-01 15:39
I'm just disappointed my ESEA stats disappeared last night, fs.
2013-05-01 15:36
Because it's a new month. Your stats are still there, just displayed for April. Now we're in May.
2013-05-01 15:54
I can't find the game I played last night, no matter what I do :(
2013-05-01 15:57
Profile>View Stats> Filter Stats(on the right)> Month? (Make sure it's set to Pug, not Aim/League etc) If not, I've had missing matches before, but then they appeared back a day or two later.
2013-05-01 16:09
Just imagine your overclocked GPU running 100% for couple weeks whenever you leave your PC. I bet some people have broken their hardware by this.
2013-05-01 15:36
I was always leaving my pc on, even when i was outside, had sudden temp jumps on my 9600gt, now it's dead, and it all started with blue screen, i was thinking that my cpu was broken or something...
2013-05-01 15:53
you should thank esea for killing such a shit card so you can buy a new one
2013-05-01 16:01
i already own gtx680 but i was using my old pc in my apartment for dota2, csgo and 1.6 , and in my new apartment i have new pc for games such as bf3 cod bo2, skyprim etc.. it served me well so far and i'm not mad about gpu, i'm mad because they used us for their filthy jobs...

2013-05-01 15:42
I really hope somebody sues them. This is clearly illegal. Also dont forget about the power costs. To mine that much bitcoins you normally have to pay a big power bill...
2013-05-01 15:43
Indeed, I hope someone takes legal actions.
2013-05-01 15:44
How do I delete my account on ESEA?
2013-05-01 15:47
Interesting thing will be if pro teams boycott it as well to support the community or if money is more important for them. Lets see
2013-05-01 15:48
Anyone who knows if police are involved into this yet?
2013-05-01 15:49

2013-05-01 15:50
interesting what pro players will say about this...
2013-05-01 15:51
big deal.
2013-05-01 15:52
I'm glad it has been discovered before it grows even more. By the way, I think it should not go to the justice because ESEA is now a major tournament and I don't want it to stop for this, even though in my opinion it is not correct at all and if the goal was to make a prizepot bigger they had to make it official before involving their clients. I just hope they're going to make an official statment with excuses, and stop deny it saying it was an april fools. That is just fucking bullshit. I just hope this is not gonna be a real scandal, and the community will continue to support CS and the organizations to make it bigger and go over this sad fact.
2013-05-01 15:56
Goal was to make them money by exploiting you
2013-05-01 16:02
I understood. By the way, does someone know if the bitcoins had effect only when playing with the esea client or if it had effect just having the client installed? never had so many fps drop than past two weeks, and it has been the first time i have a blue screen since i replaced my gpu, and it happened 3 times past 2 weeks

2013-05-01 16:24
jaguar one of the coders of esea client and the guy who found out about that stuff i assume its unisolsz the thread creator who started all this at esea forums. Also here available. I have no clue who uploaded all this i cant confirm it. youtube.com/watch?v=jsxq6SdQJSg First i thought it was ipkane but people told me its jaguar. I never heard him speaking so i have no clue and cant confirm it.

2013-05-01 15:59
why is everyone so butthurt? how many people out of those who posted here had their GPUs melted?
2013-05-01 16:02
I guess they are all offline because of that reason :D
2013-05-01 16:07
Because not everyone appreciates being infected by a virus that increased our bills and stressed our hardware without our knowledge? Are you dumb or trolling?
2013-05-01 16:08
a... virus? bitcoin miner is something that thousands of people run voluntarily. it doesn't infect your PC in any way, and in case of ESEA it only runs when you don't use your GPU. washing machines, dishwashers, toasters, conditioners and electric kettles consume 10 or 20 times as much as PCs do unless your PC is on 24h/day.
2013-05-01 16:18

Other devices is not the point. Point is: 1. They were not informed so it was not voluntarily in any given way 2. Second higher temps always end up in shorter life of the gpu. 3. In this case its malware/trojan or virus what ever you wanna call it. Antivirus programs had alerts over this And for sure electricy bills pay a rule in it as well. When you clean your clothes in your washer you get a profit out of it dont you? Your clothers should be clean after that. So in this case where is the profit for the average user who run the ESEA client? By the way your name fits you :D
2013-05-01 16:28
a... virus? bitcoin miner is something that thousands of people run voluntarily. Yeah no shit, this wasn't voluntarily though. Is a keylogger that records your passwords okay because you voluntarily write them on the internet every day? Didn't think so. It was the very definition of malicious software, it used our hardware, increased our expenses, risked our equipment and profited only the person that made the software. And it was done without our knowledge or consent. You must be a ESEA shill or just plain dumb to be defending them here.
2013-05-01 16:33
because you are paying for a service. A lot of users who pay might be jobless and just young kids spending their pocket money and now will have to fork out sooner on sorting out their pcs because ESEA decided to use it to an extreme.
2013-05-01 16:08

boom it's hit the mainstream gaming news sites kotaku.com/e-sports-league-mined-bitcoin.. esea will definitely not be able to just let this blow over especially given how truthful they'e been in response.

2013-05-01 16:41
I don't really get how this works... How did the clients earn bitcoins? Did anyone lose money?
2013-05-01 16:13
in terms of electricty costs, all potential users might have lost money.
2013-05-01 16:15
Ye but I mean how can this system of connected clients "create" bitcoins? What exactly does it?
2013-05-01 16:18
it doesn't create them; it mines them. mining rates are determined by how much system power you have, so hundreds of people on esea all pooling there computer power together to mine the coins for ESEA's gain. youtube.com/watch?v=Um63OQz3bjo
2013-05-01 16:29
But if anyone can just "create" bitcoins (by what exactly? I mean what does it mean when your client is creating bitcoins?), the value of a single bitcoin decreases... So the one with the majority of mines will win and the other will lose more and more (I mean they may earn more and more bitcoins but not enough to compensate the decrease of their value).
2013-05-01 16:28
Its like mining gold you got it now? at this point no one actually knows when the limit is totally reached. If you look at the stock exhange bitcoins go up and down all the time. Okay thats not right Bitcoin have a certain limit. At thats what they claim. But as we know with privat banks i doubt there will be a real limit. Because its not 100% transpercy as everybody claims. There are always people who run this stuff and exactly here is the weak part you know not much about these guys because its so "transparent" In the end IMF/ECB/FED can always crush that currency in saying no we dont exchange bitcoins for dollar/euro/what ever. A few banks already made that statement clear
2013-05-01 16:44
really don't know about it, it looks a little bit strange the way how easy they can earn money. just was answering your second question, but I think some topics are explaining how it works exactly.
2013-05-01 16:23
google bitcoin and bitcoin mining, it's an innovative electronic currency and you can't really describe it in two words. long story short, new bitcoins are emitted by making calculations on PCs.
2013-05-01 16:31
Suing for this is so stereotypically American. Still a very low move for ESEA though, lpkane is a money hungry idiot.

I don't understand this, people pay to get a virus on their pc's and get their gpu and gfx destroyed and others making money with this??
2013-05-01 16:34
No one got a Virus. Your Anti-Virus just caught the Program for Mining as a Virus, but it's not something that are able to hurt your software or steal Passwords. And im not aware if anyone's GPU is toasted, but it is a possibility and the Power Bill would obviously increase if they used 100% of our GPU's.. And yes, they made money out of Mining BitCoins .. Can't explain it, Google it :D
2013-05-01 16:49
hahahaha esea deaded :D
2013-05-01 16:57
what the actual fcuk... fail fail fail
2013-05-01 16:58
Never again will I trust these motherfuckers with installing an actual client from them. It was useless anyway. Tons of cheaters on ESEA private servers. They basically took my money for a month of Premium and what they did is try to steal my bitcoins and offer a non cheat-free environment, even though they have an anti-cheat client. WP ESEA! ESEA Client uninstalled. bb bobs.
2013-05-01 17:05
+1 the amount of cheaters that don't get banned and hack their faces off it's unreal. noxon for example rofl.

"accidentally"
2013-05-01 17:16
What a shame D: I'm more than surprised .. Seems to be a good platform for PUGs and competitions. Since that news people would think twice to install and run their software or not.

And I was wondering why my GPU fan went to 100% speed when I was browsing the internet...
2013-05-01 17:38
normaly it starts when you dont do anything at your pc. and browsing is doing something. Maybe you were a long time on one single site reading without opening other sites?
2013-05-01 17:55
I think it could be, that it starts after 10min of GPU idle and I guess most GPUs go on idle as long as you're just browsing the web or writing documents, etc.
2013-05-01 18:03
I have ESEA installed on my computer, but i can't find it in controlpanel>programs&software, how to delete it?
2013-05-01 18:26
Go to the directory where you installed ESEA and launch the "Uninstall.exe": D:programs\ESEA\ESEA Client\Uninstall.exe for example.

The fact is that I have MSI laptop, and whenever I'm not in-game, it uses Intel Family Chip GPU and my nVidia is idle until I return in-game.. it seemed like whenever I was watching a movie, browsing web, or doing other things for some reason my laptop got very hot and started running fans at 100%. It didn't do that when I bought it, but it might be some dust or sth..
2013-05-01 19:13
Okay that makes sense.

2013-05-01 18:11
Considering the stated amount of $3600 which they got within 17 days (14th april till yesterday), it would be approx. $47600 in 225 days (9.18.12 till now).
2013-05-01 18:14
I would bank on this going on longer than even September
2013-05-01 18:18
did you count in difficulty change that comes along when bitcoin raises in value and more miners come in? it is slower now to mine bitcoin than what it was for example half a year ago
2013-05-01 19:07
no i didn't, it's just $3600/17=$211,7/day which is ~$47600 in 225 days ;) But anyway, his comment doesen't state that it has been used since then, instead it only shows that he knew about the possibility to do so.
2013-05-01 19:17
But you have to keep in mind exchange rate and stock rate changes :) BTC was much cheaper in 2012 than it is now.
2013-05-01 22:06
wow this is fucking unbelievable.
2013-05-01 18:34
You found something there but i think the posts about 100% gpu would have come much sooner.
2013-05-01 18:58
I think it was only recently it became an issue because they changed the code to milk more money out of pcs
2013-05-01 19:04
Well it runs the bitcoin miner but can you control in that program how much usage of the gpu it is allowed to use ? If there isn't any in it well it will use the max. btw they can use cpu too i think. Never used bitcoin system only have readen about it.
2013-05-01 19:09
GPU is more ideal to run Bitcoin since it can run at a higher usage I think originally this was strictly based through the client but them installed a worm on users computers so it can be ran all the time, with the client on or off during idling times ALL the time
2013-05-01 19:12
Seems like i know much more about it now xD thanks.
2013-05-01 19:19
1.yes you can control how much gpu you use (to some extend) but it varies from gpu to gpu so same values work different on different gpus. also nvidia gpus are not very efficient. 2.yes they can use cpu yes but it is quite useless for bitcoin mining (well maybe if you have tons of clients running like esea had, then even cpu brings in money).
2013-05-01 19:13
Ok thx, yeah well i guess they can use both to boost it up ;)

I bet, 75% of the ESEA players have nvidia geforce gfx'es, on which you can't mine even a dollar in 24 hours.
2013-05-01 21:12
So? It still puts 100% stress on the GPU which is bad no matter what card it is. They just profited the most from 7series ATI users. Doesn't mean everyone else's cards were uttterly unaffected. EVERY video card idling was just stressed to its absolute limit. There are people with brand new 660's that's been failing them.
2013-05-01 22:27
would not be suprised if that would kill ESEA in the in the long run

2013-05-03 14:32
Is there anybody that can confirm the client had to be running during idle in order for the miner to take advantage of the GPU? I just uninstalled the client and my GPU temperature went down from ~70 to 40 °C (during idle; client was not started). Also, does it affect the CPU in any way? CPU temperatures went down noticably aswell.
2013-05-03 00:15
depends on the CPU and the gfx. from what i read around 40% for the cpu
