DH Winter with $250k tournament

MIRAA
September 16th, 2013 19:55

Valve has announced a partnership with DreamHack that will see a $250,000 tournament being held later this year.

Last month, Valved introduced a new featured called Arms Deal, a market for players to collect, purchase and sell decorated weapons that can be used ingame, with a portion of proceeds from the sale of the eSports case going towards funding gaming events.

It has now been revealed that through the Arms Deal, DreamHack Winter will hold a tournament with a whopping $250,000 prize purse, called DreamHack SteelSeries Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS:GO) Championship.

According to DreamHack, this is not the end of it, as the revenue sales from the Arms Deal will also help to "fuel prize pools at other upcoming CS:GO events."

For more information about the Arms Deal, check out its official website.

NiP wins DH Winter 2013 in December
2013-09-16 21:24
Don't be to sure of that, sinces it's a couple of month away, also all the teams is getting better.
2013-09-16 21:40
That's why NiP is gonna win. It's only a couple months away =)
2013-09-16 21:53
250k pricepool, I'm sure teams have full motivation to win now despite their recent results. I think it will get a lot closer this time.

I agree NiP will win but you can be sure with this amount of money on the line, teams will surely be practicing much harder.

Riot, corrupt? What a retard.....
2013-09-16 21:34
I know they have their fanboys like you who would just die for a taste of their e-penis but a simple Google search can show you just how corrupt, anti-community, and unethically profit-driven they are.
2013-09-16 22:01
Hm not a fan of Riot, not at all. I enjoy playing their game and they listen to the community which is good, thats about it, but nice try mate. About them being corrupt, thats fucking retarded. Every single company are profit-driven, whats the point in it if you get nothing out of the game? Saying they are anti-community just shows you are not into LoL scene. But hey, i bet valve e-Penis tastes better for you mate ;)
2013-09-16 22:05
LOL. so which gaming company is not profit-driven? are u insane? who do u think pays for programmers to write new stuff etc? every company is profit-driven, well at least in gaming. what matters most is that they make excellent tournaments, great ticket support answers, overall its nice to play their game so they succeeded...unlike valve with cs:go imo

2013-09-16 22:16
good question :D anyway I was wrong, this price money was for the whole competition
2013-09-16 22:41
CGS 2008 had a $500 000 first place for CSS.
2013-09-16 23:02
True, but you have to consider that CSS was only one of the games that were played. They also played Fifa 2008, dead or alive 4 and Forza Motorsport 2 for a combined first place of $500,000.
2013-09-17 13:30
GJ Valve !
2013-09-16 20:58
Wow, great to see that the community funded that much! I think this will be considered CS:GO's first 'major', much like CPL was back in the day. Hopefully NiP can finally be challenged by the time this tournament comes around.
2013-09-16 20:59
It would be epic if a team stepped up and beat NiP at the event
2013-09-16 21:01
With that amount of money on the line, I would assume teams will be acting a lot more professionally. I would expect a much better tournament, though NiP will still be the favorite.
2013-09-16 22:42
CS:GO is dead right ?
2013-09-16 20:59
Absolutely! No money, Valve not paying any attention, still no movement changes, and I'm still bad at it, so basically... is dead and gone... jk :p

they wont win this tournament, everybody will be prepared this time
2013-09-16 21:27
Same talk for months and months. Cant say NiP WILL win, but i can say they are like 90% of winning it if they just keep playing THE SAME level of the last tournament.
2013-09-16 21:37
meh bud... you really think teams sweat out practice time for 7.5k divided by 5 last DH tourney?
2013-09-16 22:11
You think NiP did? :>
2013-09-16 22:12
IMO they played like robots from what I've seen in the finals. So I guess yes they did. :D
2013-09-16 22:18
They are just at a complete different level.. With this tournament i can assure you they will pracc harder than ever so i dunno, i hope teams to beat them @ dh but i cant see it happening
2013-09-16 22:20
Well I can't say I am sure about that. This is however the _first_ MAJOR tourney, something what the likes of Neo/TaZ have been waiting for.
2013-09-16 22:24
Agreed, the Polacks will stop sleeping at this point. I could see Na'Vi and AD doing the same as well. This is going to be gud.
2013-09-16 22:44
haha, i see neo top1 :D (i think its not gonna happen but hey, who knows, maybe he will have his day in csgo like he had in 1.6, neo is still neo) i think polish guys will do some damage on this lan. they had problems with money so maybe this will motivate them to practice a lot cant wait for this tourney :)

you are wrong, if 1st is 100k, second will be 50k max. 100% sure. And it's very good. Like in LoL: 1st - 1.000.000$ 2nd - 250.000 $ ...
2013-09-17 14:08
yes, i made a mistake (counted 2 places as one). 50k max? Not exactly. FE: 1st - $100.000 2nd - $60.000 3rd - $40.000 4th - $20.000 5-6th - $10.000 7-8th - $5.000 and it would be fair enough.

2013-09-16 21:11
NiP is the only qualified team currently, unless Lemondogs also get a qualified spot due to NiP being the current champions of DHW/DHS and therefore the spot that was awarded at DHB would go to Lemondogs I would imagine.
2013-09-16 21:09
n! got a spot for Valencia I think.
2013-09-16 21:10
thanks, I hope to see a lot of teams:/
2013-09-16 21:11
Lemondogs did earn a spot, yes, and so have n!faculty for Valencia title.
2013-09-16 21:29
So we know three teams, do we know how many spots there will be, is it 16, or 32?
2013-09-16 21:29
Nope, that's all we know at this moment
2013-09-16 21:30
DOnt think it will be 32 teams. Then earning a spot in another DH wouldn't be worth much if there is a lot of qualifiers and Invites. Guess 16 teams like was last year.
2013-09-16 21:38
I would hope 32 teams. If the prize distribution gives substantial money to 5-8 or even 9-16, just qualifying for the tournament will net you more cash than winning many of the tournaments to date.
2013-09-16 21:38
I'd rather see 16 of the best teams play and keep the competition exclusive. However I'd like to see teams from all over the world come over and try their hand for the tournament.
2013-09-16 21:39
+1 Would be nice with some epic BYOC/Qualifiers.
2013-09-16 21:40
I suppose 16 teams would tidy and clean. 32 would muddle the tournament with relatively useless group stage matches.
2013-09-16 21:41
Yeah, as I said for 250k, you want the best teams, not some of the half assed teams we have seen in previous events. TI3 was amazing for the sheer unpredictability of who could and would win. Orange should have beaten Na'Vi, but didn't, and so on. Whatever happens, I will be watching every possible moment of the tournament, and I really hope they pick the casting team with precision :)
2013-09-16 21:45
Isn't more teams the better? wtf...
2013-09-16 22:46
Not to everybody. As a viewer, I would much rather watch 16 good teams battle it out rather than 16 good and 16 bad, where the results are given beforehand.
2013-09-17 09:40
haha, i think its jan/feb. so i dont think the participation list was announced.
2013-09-16 21:16

fnatic, lemondogs and Na'Vi dont have what it takes to beat NiP in a bo3. There is AD and VG indeed, still VG tend to choke and underperform vs NiP. About AD.. They are the ones who have the most chances vs NiP imo, even tho they are still not there.
2013-09-16 21:44
Yup but there 2 months to practice. Im hoping VG can make it this time
2013-09-16 21:48
2 months to pratice, means NiP will be even stronger... But yeah, im hoping for AD :p
2013-09-16 21:49
I think teams catch them faster than they goes stronger, srry my bad english
2013-09-16 21:51
just my thoughts: NiP is like always playing on their TOP-level (yes, of course sometimes one of them goes into supersaiyan mode and destroys everyone, but it's not the case), while a lot of other teams tend to underperform (AD and VG during DH Bucharest (however VG underperforms quite often) are the best examples). I think if all teams (fnatic, AD, VG, CPH Wolves etc.) reach their highest levels, NiP will have SUPER HARD time beating them and probably they'll lose to someone (to AD or fnatic , for example).
2013-09-17 15:18
I would never rule ESC out for the big ones, against all odds. Even if right now it doesn't look too likely, their recent form was quite impressive especially pasha.

Great news, would have hoped the G5 won this to fix their financial situation. but since they are no longer a team, hoping for an SK-Team to show up and win this! SK vs NiP in grandfinal! - I hope chinese/korean/brazilian teams participate. because this is teh shit!
2013-09-16 21:14
Who would play for that SK team? :D
2013-09-16 21:15
Delpan, Moddii, Flusha, Jw and Twist! Or.. Heaton Potti Spawn Fisker Ahl haha
2013-09-16 21:18
I dont know tbh, but still i think this kind of money would motivate them to comeback to counterstrike. who? I think they should assign a manager for counterstrike then start searching for a team. Maybe current fnatic with some changes? maybe bring the cw guys back to counterstrike with lucrative offers.

yup.. want to see someone other than NiP take this one. they ll make in one tourney what NiP made in a year :)
2013-09-16 21:24
While this is good news, I would rather have them drop more money in several tournaments (30k per month on a tournament or online leagues) than in one big tournament every 6 months.
2013-09-16 21:16
This.
2013-09-16 21:17
I hope they put money to MSI BEAT IT too because its nice expect lan prizepool is crap
2013-09-16 21:18
There may be a big online league with Inferno Online across multiple games(GO probably will be in) with a total prizepool overall games around 1 million Swe kronor. Though it might be swe only :/
2013-09-16 21:20
True. Especially considering NiP's dominance, the scene would benefit more from gradually distributing the money for teams to continuously improve and get multiple chances of challenging NiP.
2013-09-16 21:40
majors are needed.
2013-09-16 21:47
If we want to take Blizzard's/Riot's approach "bigger tournaments = more publicity = more interest", sure. But we really lack semi-professional players and casual players, so we really need those sub-par tournaments. Where those teams have a real chance at winning tournaments and those casual players can see a door at pro-gaming without getting stomped every game. That's one of the problems riot and blizzard face, their tournaments have so much broadcast time and are so exclusive that they are killing their own game in the long run. Because it alienates smaller tournaments since they are "less interesting" and the schedule might overlap with their tournament and because there's no real shot for low tier players to enter them.
2013-09-16 21:58
Plus hundred
2013-09-16 22:23
This.
2013-09-16 22:21
its difficult to play every months for 30.000! its boring and teams can pracctice all the fucking time for a mini-major tournament. MAYBE 100.000 every 2-3 months ok! but not every months. there are so many leagues, ESL, ESEA , ridcall , MSI Beat It, SLTV , MadCatz , ESWC , Dreamhack , FnaticFragout, EC, CPHGames, THOR, and many leagues in germany,finland,denmark,sweden,france.......... its WTF too many games!!!! i mean a MAJOR with over 100.000$ prize pool its more intresting.

''250k low money''
2013-09-16 21:21
?
2013-09-17 00:38
''just'' $250 000 is a lot of money.
2013-09-16 22:31
it is indeed but compared to ti3'es 2,8 million it is "just" 250k. one step in the right direction for cs though!
2013-09-16 23:04
The community gave almost 1.3 million to the TI3 prize pool. Considering the amount of players dota2 has, $250K is more, percentage wise, from the CS community. Also, Valve did not directly put any cash into this tournament, so it cannot be compared at all.
2013-09-17 09:37
well for ti3 it wokred like this: you bought the compendium for 10$. if i am not mistaken 2,5$ are going directly to the ti3 prizepool. imagine there woulb be more than 2,5$ :)
2013-09-17 11:03
Yes, but thats not the point, because you can say the same about the arms deal. This is an ongoing thing, not just for this one tournament - it is a very different business model. You cannot keep comparing them like you want to, in order to diminish the contributions the CS community made.
2013-09-17 11:41
100000$ for NiP. well, yes.

Not gonna happen, It will probably be 16 teams with 4 already qualified through the other DH's and 12 spaces in BYOC tournaments.

2013-09-16 21:21

2013-09-16 21:21
Guys, why are u say "thx Valve" if the money are coming from the Community?
2013-09-16 21:21
wouldnt have happened without valve anyway
2013-09-16 21:22
because they did the necessary effort in Allowing the community to contribute (they made teh cases and teh system). Which they should continue with imo.
2013-09-16 21:23
stfu
2013-09-16 22:31
So the community came and said: "Hey guys, let's give some money to DH so we can see a real major tournament", or was it Valve that created a great skin system that made people intentionally or not(doesn't matter) increase the prize pot of tournaments by buying keys?
2013-09-17 03:57
To be quite honest...I'd rather see 2 $125K tournaments...
2013-09-16 21:21
If community can keep this going, they could keep 2x250k tournaments / year?
2013-09-16 21:23
Hopefully. However, You have to assume that the novelty of the Arms Deal has contributed substantially to this high prize money and with time, the contribution from the community will dwindle. Unless of course valve can bring more players into the mix.
2013-09-16 21:27
True, but they could add something more to game , i mean like Jerseys of teams / Country skins etc :P
2013-09-16 21:29
Yeah, novelty is the only thing that will keep the donations up
2013-09-16 21:30

United States sbe
Saw seoul_kiM post this on ESEA's forums. I really like this idea because of two reasons. One, you get some amazing competition, similar to the old CPL days. Two, with half the teams that participate getting at least 4K+ teams from all over the world could justify the long travel. This would be my "dream"hack 16 teams invited 16 teams placed through regional qualifiers ro32 is 8 groups of 4 teams where top 2 advance to ro16 ro16 is 4 groups of 4 teams where top 2 advance to playoffs playoffs is bo3 until semi-finals between 8 teams grand finals bo5!! 1st place 100,000 2nd place 50,000 3rd 25,000 4-8 10,000 8-16 4,375
2013-09-16 21:26
I believe it will be a 16 team tournament. DH almost always have this. 3-4 teams are already qualified. NiP: DH Summer N!: DH Valencia LemonDogs: DH Bucharest Runner ups Then we have some international qualifiers and a BYOC in the main tournament.
2013-09-16 21:29
250k is too much for 16 teams
2013-09-16 21:30
LoL world championship is lower than 16 and TI3 was 16 teams ^^
2013-09-16 21:31
Still too much
2013-09-16 21:37
DH WInter is a final for the year. It wont be more open than any of the lesser qualifier DreamHacks.
2013-09-16 21:39
Still would be better to split that bucks to few tourneys.
2013-09-16 21:42
That I can agree with :)
2013-09-16 21:45
different game, different financial situation
2013-09-16 22:33
16 teams tournament would be bullshit. They need to do something like CPH Games, where many teams/mixs have a chance to participate
2013-09-16 21:32
If you've read up DH Winter have the last 2 years been DreamHack finals for the year. Every lesser DH act as qualifier for the big DH Winter every year while it is complemented by International and or BYOC tourneys.
2013-09-16 21:35
well, they should do an exception by hosting more qualifiers and giving invites, considering the fact, that this tournament will have the biggest prize pool in recent history. They should do a major-type tournament, not a 16team tournament, which will last 2 days.
2013-09-16 21:42
Dude BO5 is too boring even when you're playing
2013-09-16 21:30
grand finals bo13
2013-09-16 21:30
Just wanted to post this. Fully agree
2013-09-16 21:34
playoffs should be in the double elimination format 4sure or it will be pure bullshit.
2013-09-16 21:39
I prefer the CPH system: 8 groups of 4 teams with double elimination system
2013-09-17 04:01
Hopefully this will make teams sit the f*** down and work. Because it doesn't matter how prestigious the prize pot makes the event, when NiP is simply cruising through it is as easily forgotten as any other tournament.

NiP, Lemondogs and n!faculty are all directly invited due to winning respective DH stops.
2013-09-16 21:43
Yeah but is it 100% sure that the tournament will be Dreamhacks own csgo tournament or is it going to be CSGO championship- tourny that is only played IN dreamhack winter
2013-09-16 21:51
We dont know that yet, but I dont think they will have 2 big events during the same lan during 3 days :)
2013-09-16 21:53
wouldnt be the first time. dh + swe champ
2013-09-17 00:39
Swe champ was a Bo3. 2 events would be like atleast more than 8 group stages in 2 days and 2 brackets who take longer time than DH. It would be nonstop games during the day and in the middle of the night to fit the schedule.
2013-09-17 07:17
Which DH did Lemondogs win?
2013-09-16 22:35
They didn't however NiP were already champions of DHS, so Lemondogs won the spot to DHW as being runners up of DHB. Pedantic Twirl ;)
2013-09-16 22:45
They came second in DH B last weekend, since NiP won last DH they were already qualified, hence the invite went out to Lemondogs.

2013-09-16 21:45
heard somewhere valve has gained 288k from keys, knowing DHW was already planning for a 30k tournament, well you do the maths

Try to stall the negativity and focus on the positive. This is good news for the CS community, no matter how you look at it.
2013-09-16 22:20
Be fucking positive for once. Just once. Or get the fuck out if you don't like cs go
2013-09-16 22:35
There's like 5x more people playing DotA2 at any given moment than all the CS's put together... 1.6, CSS, CZ, CSGO.. why would it be anywhere near the prizepot of TI3?
2013-09-16 23:05
There comes the TI3 reply. I was waiting for it! Yes, TI3 had 3 million dollars. They made a compendium for all of their fanbase to buy available on their fucking frontpage. All of that went to the prize pool. Besides, CSGO averages about 45.000 players peak. DotA 2 averages 500.000. Thats 11x times the amount of what CSGO has. Moreover, the total playerbase of DotA 2 would probably be more like 20-30 if not alot more than CSGO. "Also the game sucks" Nice. No, the game is average and it is getting better. Just chill the fuck out for a moment and stop being so fucking negative. Ofcourse TI3 is bigger and has a larger prize pool, what the fuck do you expect LOL

2013-09-17 15:31
Imagine if ex-CSS players would accept the fact that 1.6 players have higher and more expectations to a CS game than CSS-players do.
2013-09-17 15:36
I'm a 1.6 player myself, and I'm still not trying to point fingers or bitch about CS:GO, so I don't see why you have to do it.

2013-09-18 17:47
There are other games like Sc2 which is usually there, but I think CSGO is the only FPS played.
2013-09-17 07:20
There are othe gameS, as in more than only CS:GO and StarCraft? If so, I doubt this event will be any bigger than the previous ones. The prize pool is always higher for SC2.
2013-09-17 09:30
What I am afraid of is that now that Valve is involved with tournaments (even though it's community-funded), they will also try and influence the competitive scene more. As in, I wouldn't be surprised if DH Winter was to use the non-_se maps. Maybe even mirage. Which would be unfair if either NiP knows about that earlier than other teams or if Valve is not going to consider the input of other teams. In the long run, this could be the start of every tournament and league being forced to use Valve's versions because pro teams don't want to practice and play different versions of the maps for every league or tournament. Which is bad because having Valve handle the competitive map pool I think would be troublesome at this stage where there has to be done so much to make the maps more competitively viable. Also, seeing as it's the "community's money", I would like to see a poll for the system of prize distribution. The community should have the choice both whether the first place gets most of the money and whether it is really viable to spend most of the gathered money on one single tournament. As pointed out earlier, distributing the money more gradually seems better considering the current state of the scene and some of the money could also be used to fund intermediate and semi-pro tournaments, because that is where the top scene of the future lays.
2013-09-16 23:29
Why would nip know about it earlier then other teams?
2013-09-16 23:58
Dunno really. I think they have more insight as they are more in contact with Valve or tournament organizers. All I know is that they have been mentioning DH Winter as a major tournament before this was announced and that fisko knew more about Valve's plans than what was officially said regarding what they were gonna do with the money. Also, some facebook screenshots have shown that the NiP players were telling other teams to start practising the non-_se versions because tournaments would start picking them up soon.

_se maps are also made by valve, there's no conspiracy going on here. tho none should be given and advantage, u got a valid point there. but i see no harm in changing the map versions as long as everyone is informed equally.
2013-09-17 10:20
Yeah, no conspiracy. It's just that NiP were at the Valve HQ and are in favour of implementing Valve's versions instead of the _se ones (even mirage). Which is something most other teams do not accept (mirage not at all, the other maps only without chickens and fog). So, should this be forced through, even if informing the scene equally, that would be a serious issue in my mind. Also, yes, the _se versions are handled by Valve aswell, but initially they were meant to be designed for competitive play and are not used by Valve for MM etc. So with the _se versions, there still is a slight seperation between casual and competitive play. But ultimately, the competitive scene should design the classic maps to their own liking and use them, because they could be much better. So, if we accept Valve's non-_se maps, we also accept their approach of having newbies and professionals play the same maps provided by them officially. Which would be great if the maps were good, but they aren't. We would then have to "fight with" Valve for every change we want to see in the competitive maps just like we have to "fight" for everything else and what relying on them for designing maps for competitive play can lead to mirage and their non_se version updates are good examples of. I say we first attempt a complete competitive workover for the classic maps and then think about compromising with what Valve thinks suits the casual environment more.
2013-09-19 01:03
Valve must've finally read Lurppis' article on supporting the game.

2013-09-17 12:47
+1 game is out since 2011 and still misses basic aspects that make a good cs game.(yes, i will keep saying this) 250k tournament doesnt make the game better. ignoring the fact that they had to add ugly skins into the game to create that tournament.
2013-09-17 15:32
You still clinging to that idea that CSGO doesn't have the "basic aspects" that made CS a good game to play? Because if you are counting bugged up movement then you will wait a long time for any game to emulate that. CSGO is still at the very core, Counter Strike. Two teams of 5 players fighting with guns over a single objective. Everything else will change/evolve around that "basic aspect".
2013-09-18 18:49
'bugged up movement' with that you just proved that you have no idea what im talking about. i'll just drop one of my older comments, it basically explains everything: Few days ago some guy told me that it doesn't matter from what game you come. I'll just copy-paste my reply to his comment, explains very well why CSS players dont understand 1.6 players complains about csgo. 'It DOES matter since CSS didn't have as much aspects that mattered to the players as 1.6 had and thats why YOU will NEVER understand it. CSS wasn't very movement based, wallbanging didn't matter very much too. The players individual skill was pretty much only based on aim and that was what made the game interesting for the players. 1.6 on the other hand had alot more aspects that made 1.6 interesting to watch.' youtube.com/watch?v=q8PWL9yVB9I youtube.com/watch?v=WsC0Du_8HDI Even if people's moanings sound silly to YOU sometimes, they are justified. So again, even if you might not understand our complains, you have to respect the fact that there is another community playing the same game that you play, just that this community has different desires for that game. So instead of flaming us, flame volvo. CSS players just CAN'T understand it since CSGO misses the same aspects that CSS already missed. Show me any CSGO or CSS action that is comparable to this: youtube.com/watch?v=q8PWL9yVB9I Show me!
2013-09-18 19:07
I came from 1.6 before I switched to Source, so I know exactly what people are talking about.
2013-09-18 20:10
Apparently you don't know what I'm talking about. Bunch of people (especially from England) switched from 1.6 to CSS back then. The thing is that 1.6 playstyles weren't that evolved back then so it doesn't matter. Anyway, you busted yourself with saying 'bugged up movement'. I feel like my job here is done, #695 said everything. cya!
2013-09-18 20:19
Because silent walking was originally intended, same for most other features of the game yes? Bunnyhopping I can grasp as that was part and parcel of the old formula of Quake and HLDM and other games like AG. However there are some parts of movement on the old engine that can never ever ever be replicated on future engines because of the fact that the old engine wasn't coded amazingly. For someone who is trying to "outsmart" me you aern't doing very well on your own history lessons. ie "thing is 1.6 playstyles weren't that evolved back then" LOL!
2013-09-18 20:37
You are a completely ignorant smartass. 'However there are some parts of movement on the old engine that can never ever ever be replicated on future engines because of the fact that the old engine wasn't coded amazingly.' So what about CSPromod? What 'parts of movement' do you mean? Tell me! youtube.com/watch?v=diK-R2jjN_o youtube.com/watch?v=NacmIJW8svM Also, with movement I dont mean russian walking, I mean, it's a cool thingy but it's one of the things where I can understand people who don't like it. And the playstyles WERE not that evolved back then, that's easy to see just by watching some highlights from now and then, don't know why this seems so funny to you. Anyway, I'm still waiting for your CSGO/CSS action that is comparable to this: youtube.com/watch?v=q8PWL9yVB9I

1. 125 000 2. 60 000 3. 30 000 4. 15 000 5-8. 5000 each imo!
2013-09-17 02:55
I think you should reward teams for placing higher in the 5-8.
2013-09-17 03:49
how is that decided, then? imo only third place decider and final is interesting to watch
2013-09-17 03:55
Run off matches... it doesn't need to be exciting to watch. Teams from far away should have a chance to break even on travel\hotel expenses
2013-09-17 04:02
5000 should cover some of the expenses, but not all. Those matches will take too much time from an event like DH.
2013-09-17 04:27
Under any other circumstance I would agree with you, but this money was spent by the global community on e-sports cases... so any team should be able to attend and have a good shot at breaking even. Example:A team from Australia could potentially break even from placing 6th. 30h 35m, 2 stops HKG, HEL 11:25a SYD Sydney 8:00a ARN Stockholm Arrives next day $1,469.68 roundtrip per person x 5 = ~$7,500 -------------------------- 1 $125,000 2 $47,000 3 $28,000 4 $18,000 5 $12,000 6 $10,000 7 $6,000 8 $4,000 ---------------------------
2013-09-17 15:29
you are saying that any team should be able to attend because it's investments from players globally, I bet you most of it comes from Europeans and it's not like NA or Australia is hosting LAN tournaments for us Europeans. DH has always been there with tournaments and if you don't want to risk paying the trip over there you shouldn't even think about it in the first place. EYE, Begrip and so many others payed money out of their own pocket to attend CPL. Break even... lol. You just posted the cost of the flights, what about hotel or whatever and food?
2013-09-17 15:36
ph1 Assumptions. ph2 Re-read my post. ph3 Irrelevant. Re-read my post. ph4 Re-read my post. Learn math. Deduct $7.5k from 10k.
2013-09-17 16:25
Assumption, yes, but most active players are Europeans. You can tell by numbers. That's not an answer. It's not irrelevant as you just wrote that it's global money. Learn math? So what if that Australian team places 8th? Then they get 1k less instead. You are not very bright, are you? "Assumptions" and you assume they will place sixth.
2013-09-17 17:01
So you have access to Valves financial data? Please share. Re-read my post. Irrelevant. Re-read my post. I didn't assume they would place 6th or better. I shared a prize breakdown that I felt was fair\would be used and determined what they would need to place in order to breakeven. You criticized it saying it wasn't sufficient and I disagreed.

I'd add those 20k to either the first place or add 5k more for places 1, 2, 3, 4.

2013-09-17 18:11
The gap between 1st n 2nd price is just too high, moreover when there is a team like NiP who are most likely gonna win
2013-09-17 19:27
Sounds like a legitimate concern to me.
2013-09-17 20:29
i agree, take 40k from 1st and distribute among the rest of top 8.
2013-09-18 09:48
Free money for NiP
2013-09-17 03:51
With this kind of money on the line I don't think so. Teams are going to practice more than ever before.
2013-09-17 03:51
zomg. is this the biggest cs prize purse ever?
2013-09-17 03:54
Im not sure about CGS, did they give all 500k for css? but yeh other than that yes. This torunament will be so niceeY!!

2013-09-17 04:36
So if qualifiers are to be done on-line, when can we expect a better anti-cheat worthy of larger prize fund investments? Because for the money that now seems to be entering the CSGO scene, it appears more likely than ever we're likely headed towards Organner v2014...
2013-09-17 05:02
dreamhack have allways had on place qualifier
2013-09-17 08:23
Counter-Strike is back Bithces!
2013-09-17 05:38
$ for winner of this event > all $ nip earned for all past tournaments
2013-09-17 05:39
That's what I was thinking as well... though I'm not completely sure.
2013-09-17 06:18
the team that wins this will be the most accomplished team in csgo yet :))
2013-09-17 08:05
Nah, NiP's won more than 150k themselves, so the team who wins that isnt NiP will be 2nd still :P I dont think 1st price will be more than 150k.
2013-09-17 11:34

i hope its not a case of the whole world pays (for arms deals keys/crates) and only europe plays (for the 250k), that would be pretty shit
2013-09-17 09:21
As far as I remember, the cash from the arms deals will generally go to established tournaments, so it makes perfectly good sense to give a lot to DH. But it would be cool to have world wide qualifiers, if only players from Oceania and Asia can pay for the travel expenses.

inb4 valve forces dreamhack to play new mirage and bullshit chicken maps because valve sponsored money
2013-09-17 09:27
I don't know where you get that it is "Valve sponsored money" from. It is "community funded" by buying into the eSports keys/cases in game.
2013-09-18 18:46
Sure, but the money is technically still from Valve. They made the keys and they get the money from the keys (at least the CSGO keys, I dont know if the e-Sport keys goes directly to organizers) but if Valve transfers the money to Dreamhack or give them a cheque it is technically still their money. It wouldn't surprise me if they'd try to do something like that (playing on their versions), since they have tried so eagerly to do that in the past.
2013-09-18 18:50
The money comes from in game purchases from the community, therefore the community funded these prize pools. I'm not sure how much I have to say about it to make sure you understand. I pay £1.49 for an eSports Key, and £1 goes to a prize pool. 49p to Valve, Valve keep their share, the rest goes to prize pools including DHW.
2013-09-18 20:12
I am aware. Valve still made it possible, though. Therefore still part of their money, even though they share. Thats why I said it wouldn't surprise me if they forced or atleast tried to make the players use their maps (even though its most likely not gonna happen, was also just a part trollish post).
2013-09-18 20:45
They won't as it's pointless doing so when all other tournaments currently don't. They know this.
2013-09-18 21:18
Heh. What did I tell you? ;) Not that its surprising in any way though, everyone knew this was coming.
2013-09-29 20:20
I said "it's pointless doing so when all other tournaments currently don't". DHW is the first to change, the rest are now following suit #insideinformation! My information was correct, but what I didn't know was that some of the event organisers are now working closely with Valve.
2013-09-29 21:05
So it was pointless of them doing so because all other tournaments dont, but they did anyway? Your information wasnt correct. Lol.
2013-09-29 21:11
My information was correct at that time. What I am saying is that all tournaments that are ongoing will soon be changing as a result of Valve working with them to bolster future prize pools. Valve admitted that they had been wrong to do two versions of the same maps, and have now rectified these issues with changing only official maps and not se maps. With that said current tournaments will soon be looking to change over. Had that not been the case, then use of the official maps would not of been done. This was the catalyst tournament for change.
2013-09-29 21:17
I hope you're wrong. I honestly do. Or if not, I hope they really are gonna fix their maps till the next major tournament they are gonna sponsor. :/ But sure, what you are saying might be true. I just dont hope so...

2013-09-17 10:30
yay, a team consisting of 4 madfraggers and 1 retired madfragger. Inb4 NBK or shox ends last on the scoreboard and minus statistics in the tournament. Then JoOoOohNy makes threads about "-shox,-NBK" because they have to play more defensive roles in the team. :D

They need to allow at least the top 8 to place in the money. In fact I'd let some 8-12 get like 2000 or something just so they can cover travel.
2013-09-17 10:58
AWESOME.
2013-09-17 10:58
I am just curious, is it first time when Valve supports Counter-Strike community? 250k prize pool and its still going to be lame and boring event. Missing CPL times when it was possible to see whole world fighting for a title, for example, Lunatic-Hai, 3D, mibr and so on. For now its mostly Scandinavian teams and some Slavic ones. Its like a just wasting a money and great chance to go huge as it was in 2006.
2013-09-17 11:01
Wow that's huge,great job valve!
2013-09-17 11:02
Good job Valve!
2013-09-17 11:14
it is so stupid to make a tour. with that money, it ll be thrown away. but a league could be much better.
2013-09-17 11:40
A tournament like this is much better for the community. Hopefully this will bring alot of attention to cs:go and more people will get interested and start playing. I think this could be what the community needs atm.
2013-09-17 12:31

2013-09-17 12:52
Amazing news! Although rare to see such announcement directly from Valve. They finally understood the game and the FPS scene is going downwards due to these new and non-spectator-friendly Moba games. Seriously.. at the moment eSports is based on Starcraft 2, League of Legends and Dota 2. No FPS games included. Maybe CS:GO, or some random FPS games. I wish Valve should done this during the golden age (1.6). But still, I am really glad of Valve announcing this. Thanks!
2013-09-17 13:00
It's pretty amazing that they have been able to raise this amount of money from crates in such a short time. It makes the future of competitive CS look rather bright.
2013-09-17 13:16
Finally,this is CS:GO deserved.
2013-09-17 13:48
1st - $125k 2nd - $60k 3rd - $35k 4th - $15k 5-6th - $10k 7-8th - $5k Would be great.
2013-09-17 14:20
No)
2013-09-17 15:01
$125k + $60k + $35k + $15k + $10k*2 + $5k*2 = $265k it seems that you did the same mistake as i did.
2013-09-17 15:07
derp xD Well there will extra-money from "Arms Deal" which means this math can be correct

ad or nip is going to take this
2013-09-17 15:33
250k for first place please.
2013-09-17 16:07
So when they move on to the inevitable release of the E-sports case series 2014, 2015, etc - as long as these skins continue to sell, presumably they'll continue to provide the same money (give or take) each year?! This equation alone may well lead to other organisations making the leap to CS:GO alongside this renewed Volvo push. Given that this prize fund was presumably only a fraction of what was made from such a short period of sales, there likely exists considerable opportunity for partner revenue through future tournaments.
2013-09-17 16:13
i think that a percentage from every esports case that is sold in market goes to the game (10%csgo +5% to valve) so i think that valve as long it keeps improving the game step by step they will also support events like this.
2013-09-17 16:18

2013-09-17 18:17
delpan isnt even that good in csgo
2013-09-17 19:56
actually he is.
2013-09-17 20:06
pfft what drugs are you on mate ?
2013-09-17 20:11
He played really well at DH Bucharest. You could either say this is him finally breaking through as a solid player (i.e. "you're only as good as your last tournament"), or continue to rate him on overall performance, which is above average. I'm inclined to go with the former. I do think NiP with delpan on paper looks stacked as shit but that doesn't mean they'd be a better team (e.g. SK 2011 with trace). Regardless, they won't kick fifflaren because he's part of their current winning formula.

Well it's not really Valve, Valve created the path for the community to walk, the community then made this happen by buying into eSports Keys/cases etc.
