Top 10 matches of 2013

HLTV.org brings you the list of ten best matches of 2013, as well as some of the most notable matches, which did not make the list, but still were interesting in a particular way.

As our top 20 player ranking progresses, we want to give you another list, this time not put into any particular order other than by date.

These are the ten best matches throughout 2013 from our point of view. Some of them may be interesting due to unexpected results, others because they were spectacular or even record-breaking.

With some time left before the next event, which will be ESEA Invite Season 15 Global Finals, you can replay some of them and get a little bit of nostalgia going to fill the gap.

Top 10 matches of 2013

Match: France VeryGames 2 - 1 Ukraine Na´Vi
Media: VOD pt. 1, pt. 2, pt. 3, pt. 4 (incomplete), GOTV
Event: Mad Catz Vienna
Stage: Quarter-finals
Date: February 24th
Score: de_mirage_go 34:30
de_dust2_se 11:16
de_inferno 16:14

Mad Catz Vienna was Natus Vincere's debut. The Ukrainian team put in a lot of effort before appearing at the first tournament and this was it. This particular quarter-final was the longest match of CS:GO's history, as well as a surprising result by the Ukrainians, who were expected to be the next big thing in the game afterwards.

Match: Russia Virtus.pro 3 - 0 Sweden NiP
Media: VOD pt. 1pt. 2pt. 3 (English), GOTV
Event: SLTV StarSeries V Finals
Stage: Grand final
Date: April 7th
Score: de_inferno_se 19:15
de_dust2_se 16:14

If this was a ranking, this match would probably be very high on the list. The CIS-based team broke the amazing record of 87 maps won in a row in the upper bracket final. In the grand final, Virtus.pro were the first to take the tournament victory from the Swedish giants.

Match: Sweden NiP 2 - 0 France VeryGames
Media: VOD (English), GOTV
Event: ESEA Invite Season 13 Global Finals
Stage: Upper bracket final
Date: April 21st
Score: de_nuke_se 16:14
de_mirage_go 16:14

VeryGames have been struggling against NiP since the very beginning of CS:GO, most of the time losing in the final, but this match was their first real chance of taking a win against the Swedes. That did not happen though, but before VeryGames actually beat their rivals, this was their best performance against them.

Match: United States Quantic 2 - 0 France VeryGames
Media: VOD (English), GOTV
Event: ESEA Invite Season 13 Global Finals
Stage: Consolidation final
Date: April 21st
Score: de_inferno_se 22:20
de_cache 16:14

Not many American teams have shown themselves in European tournaments and when they have, not much was expected of them. This time the Europeans came to America and Quantic managed to overcome those expectations on their home turf against the second best team in the world back in April, proving that America has what it takes to compete against the best.

Match: Sweden NiP 22 - 20 Sweden Publiclir.se
Media: VOD (English), GOTV
Event: DreamHack Summer
Stage: Group stage
Date: June 15th
Score: de_dust2_se 22:20

An all-Swedish match which included seemingly an impossible comeback by NiP, who faced tournament elimination at 11-15 in the group stage. Only if it was not for Richard "Xizt" Landstrom's and Adam "friberg" Friberg's two-versus-five with a smoke defuse in a one-versus-three, which saved NiP before surviving multiple match points and two overtimes. Not only did their team proceed to the play-offs, NiP managed to win the tournament after a one-sided final against Epsilon.

Match: Sweden NiP 2 - 1 Russia Virtus.pro
Media: VOD pt. 1, pt. 2, pt. 3 (English), GOTV
Event: SLTV StarSeries VI Finals
Stage: Upper bracket final
Date: July 6th
Score: de_mirage_ce 9:16
de_dust2_se 16:10
de_nuke_se 19:17

Virtus.pro swapped Dauren "AdreN" Kystaubayev for Ladislav "GuardiaN" Kovács and they exchanged two series after the CIS-based team broke the record. DreamHack Summer went to NiP, while RaidCall EMS One Summer Finals' encounter was taken away by Virtus.pro. This time NiP had to strike back even after being up 8-2 on the initial map, and they did on de_dust2_se, but de_nuke_se was one of the greatest comebacks ever seen. If it wasn't for Christopher "GeT_RiGhT" Alesund's extreme performance, NiP wouldn't have came back from a 5-15 score on the last map to force the overtime.

Match: France VeryGames 2 - 0 Sweden NiP
Media: VOD pt. 1pt. 2 (English), GOTV
Event: SLTV StarSeries VII Finals
Stage: Upper bracket semi-finals
Date: October 10th
Score: de_inferno_se 16:14
de_mirage_go 16:6

A long-standing rivalry between the two teams exists basically since the very first CS:GO LAN tournament, DreamHack Valencia. It was very one-sided up until this point, VeryGames lost all eight LAN encounters (16-0 in maps) before they finally got the upper hand in SLTV StarSeries VII Finals' upper bracket. They went on to beat NiP twice more afterwards, before the Swedes got back and won in DreamHack Winter's semi-final, which you can see below.

Match: Ukraine Astana Dragons 2 - 1 Sweden NiP
Media: VOD pt. 1, pt. 2, pt. 3 (English), GOTV
Event: SLTV StarSeries VII Finals
Stage: Consolidation final
Date: October 13th
Score: de_inferno_se 7:16
de_cache 16:12
de_dust2_se 22:20

Even though Astana Dragons did not live up to the initial hype when the team was formed back in July, they were still able to be a team to beat NiP. They proved it in October in the same tournament, where Patrik "f0rest" Lindberg & co also first lost to VeryGames. It was a nerve-wracking battle, where the CIS team made of stars managed to pull through in two overtimes on the last map.

Match: Sweden NiP 2 - 1 France VeryGames
Media: VOD (English), GOTV
Event: DreamHack Winter
Stage: Semi-finals
Date: November 30th
Score: de_dust2 16:13
de_inferno 6:16
de_nuke 16:5

NiP's encounter with VeryGames was probably the most desired match of CS:GO history. According to numerous analysts, these two teams should have met in the grand final of the biggest CS tournament in history, but the French-Belgian team lost to compLexity in the group stage, which meant these two would battle it out in the semi-final already. It was also when NiP allegedly first used anti-strats, which seems to have worked, as they got the better of their rivals after three previous unsuccessful best-of-threes.

Match: Sweden fnatic 2 - 1 Sweden NiP
Media: VOD (English), GOTV
Event: DreamHack Winter
Stage: Grand final
Date: November 30th
Score: de_dust2 16:14
de_inferno 6:16
de_train 16:2

An easily predictable match-up, analyse-wise. NiP were expected to win in big numbers, as they did against a very similar team at the same stage in summer. Fnatic took their Swedish competitors by surprise and beat the odds though. The young team went on to break NiP's hearts after such a hyped semi-final and take the happy ending of the TV6 series away. The underdogs managed to break the viewer record, 145,294 people were watching the final map of the all-Swedish final through streams and GOTV.

Other notable matches

We decided to give a honorary mention to five more matches, which could not make the top 10 list.

United States Quantic 2 - United States Dynamic at ESEA Season 13 Global Finals (VOD)

An all-American match which could've gone either way, as there were five overtimes over the first two maps.

Russia Virtus.pro 2 - 1 Sweden NiP at RC EMS One Summer Finals (VOD)

Another match of Virtus.pro's own rivalry with NiP, where VP managed to overcome the Swedes after losing the first map and winning on a thirty-round de_nuke_se.

Sweden NiP 3 - Ukraine Natus Vincere at SLTV StarSeries VI Finals (VOD pt. 1, pt. 2, pt. 3, pt. 4, pt. 5)

Natus Vincere took the initial two maps, but then were doomed after coming short in the third, as they had to play de_nuke_se which the Ukrainians never trained.

Ukraine Natus Vincere 31 - 28 Poland US at RC EMS One Fall Finals (VOD)

Na´Vi's group stage match with the new Universal Soldiers was one of the longest matches in CS:GO history.

United States compLexity 16 - 14 France VeryGames at DreamHack Winter (VOD)

VeryGames were taken by surprise by compLexity on de_inferno thanks to a brilliant last-round strategy, which sent the French-Belgian team in the same half of the bracket as NiP.

Its very surprising that the top 10 matches all involve one of the 2 teams that have been miles ahead of everyone else doing they year.

I guess that's sarcasm? I'm not surprised of the bias and I'm not being critical of it either. Some of these choices however are really just down to the context surrounding it. Like the Fnatic vs Nip DhW was sub par and a pretty anti–climactic final but then it has the highest viewer amount and the biggest cs tournament surrounding it.
2014-01-11 19:55
Thats quite a few NiP - VG encounters thats in the top10, lel.
2014-01-11 15:12

Nice choice and good work hltv for keeping up the good work in analysis and providing these lists with demos and vods. I will certainly review most of these matches that I watched live. Especially NIP-VP and NIP-publiclir. The drama in this last game was great on the VOD :D

NiP 3 - 2 Natus Vincere at SLTV StarSeries VI Finals (VOD pt. 1, pt. 2, pt. 3, pt. 4, pt. 5) in top 10
2014-01-11 15:39
What about Clan Mystik over VG at ESWC Final, notably with their insane comeback on de_mirage without giving VG any single round? I think it's far more impressive than NiP-Publiclir match.

Sry, Quantic 2 - 0 VeryGames on inferno was ridiculous.

WesternWolves 16-2 NiP was the best match of 2013 by far.
2014-01-11 16:12
Like lurppis said about the game against Virtus Pro on nuke when NiP made the huge comeback. The stats from GeT_RiGhT on that match was amazing, he had like the highest entrykills in a row of 10 rounds through all time in CS history. One of the best plays through CS history he also said on twitter.
2014-01-11 16:13
Good write up, I seem to remember NiP vs Quantic at ESEA finals in USA being very good, like 5 maps long or something?

in these "best of 2013" posts i'm noticing a distinct bias towards things that happened towards the end of the year... fnatic beating nip in the dhw final was not even a good game tbh

These are sort of more "memorable/milestone matches" as opposed to exciting matches themselves. While it's a great list the 5 matches in the honourable mentions are a lot more exciting to watch themselves. Also "[fnatic] went on to break NiP's hearts after such a hyped semi-final and take the happy ending of the TV6 series away." >take the happy ending of the TV6 series away LOL
2014-01-11 18:19
Publiclir vs NiP was one of the best match I ever watched actually, it was pretty insane.
