WECG to feature CS:GO

The organisers of the World e-Sports Championship Games have announced that this year's event circuit will feature CS:GO as a promotional title.

Following the disbandment of the organisation behind the World Cyber Games events, Bory Jun, a former WCG COO, launched a new festival called the World e-Sports Championship Games (WECG), while maintaining the olympic spirit that was unique to its predecessor.

This means that teams will have to come from the national qualifiers that are held all over the world to get the chance to represent their country at the global finals.

WECG chiefs were involved with WCG

For the first edition of the WECG festival, however, the organisers have introduced two new events: continental championships, which will serve as a regional preliminary round, and global challenges, where teams can take part regardless of their nationality.

The 2014 WECG Grand Finals will take place in December in China, with five cities currently being considered to host the event: Chengdu, Shanghai, Kunshan, Chongqing and Huaxi.

"I am very pleased and look forward to hosting the first WECG Grand Final in China," said WECG co-founder Bory Jun.

"China is the world's biggest market in the gaming industry and has become an e-Sports hub. It is the best place to begin the WECG journey. We look forward to contributing to the growth of e-Sports in China."

A provisional game list for the 2014 event circuit has been released, and it includes CS:GO as a promotional title. It is still unclear which events, if any, apart from the Global Finals, will feature Valve's FPS title as details remain slim about how this new festival will be structured.

Below you can find the current game list for WECG 2014:

Official Game Titles

  • StarCraft® II: Heart of the Swarm® (Blizzard) / RTS
  • Hearthstone™: Heroes of Warcraft™ (Blizzard) / Digital CCG
  • DOTA2 (Valve) / Action RTS
  • Ultra Street Fighter® IV (Capcom) / Fighting

Mobile Official Game Titles

  • Crisis Action (CMGE) / FPS
  • Dance Everyday (CMGE) / Dance & Rhythm

Promotional Game Title

  • Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (Valve) / FPS)

For more information about WECG, check out the event's official website.

Glad to see the very first WECG is hosted in China. Hope organization will be professional enough :)
2014-08-01 02:35
It will remain in China. Just as how wcg was basically the Chinese cyber games wecg will be the same
2014-08-01 02:51
I know. I feel it will be more like an Asian Scene tournament. With CSGO just promotion title, I feel that it will be placed by some low game next time. But we will see.

That are the people who are refreshing hltv.org 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 51 weeks a year (everyone needs a week off right), until they see a new newspost and just strongly feel the desire to be the #1 guy to post a comment. But because they dont have the time to write something usefull (keep in mind there are others luring on that #1 spot), they just write "n1" or "nice". I hope you understand.

'Promotional Game Title' what does it mean? also will eu teams go to this tournamentt?
2014-07-31 21:14
it should mean that the tournament will feature a smaller prize purse and fewer teams, when compared to an official game.
2014-07-31 21:16
nice, something at least. :D
2014-07-31 21:21
we dont care about WECG prize! we have Valve, we have skins :D
2014-08-01 01:08
if not mistaken, should be 8 team available.

Not only them a lot of teams like Titan, NaVi, HellRaisers wont be able to attend, thats why it was boring in the last WCG in 1.6
2014-07-31 21:19
as you said before edit: BYE BYE iBP, coL, HR, Titan, NaVi, mouz and more
2014-07-31 21:20
mouz not good enough anyway inb4 med mouz fanb0yz

2014-07-31 22:25
"and global challenges, where teams can take part regardless of their nationality."
2014-07-31 21:20
oh, I skipped that part! really nice
2014-07-31 21:21
Afaik Global Challenges are not the same as the main tournament, just like IEM used to hold IEM Guangzho or whatever they were like side tournaments
2014-07-31 21:21
This is the thing we voted on right? Nice
2014-07-31 21:15
oh yeah, but wasnt csonline massively in the lead or something, cant remember
2014-07-31 21:16
csonline is that cheap spin off that's popular in Asia right? Don't know honestly, I remember you could vote on that. Glad cs go made it :P
2014-07-31 21:20

2014-07-31 21:15

2014-07-31 21:15
nice, but im skeptical after they stopped supporting cs
2014-07-31 21:15
their twitter has 100followers...
2014-07-31 21:17
I don't think that prize money will be that big. So if prize will be small then less good teams will attend. But great that we have more tournaments. :)
2014-07-31 21:18
FPS on Mobile? How to play competitive games on mobile? :D
2014-07-31 21:19
with controller obviously ;]
2014-07-31 21:22
one can play literally everything competetivly
2014-07-31 22:02

asians love micro transactions and half-hour taxing. 1.6 died just to be reborn as a "pay by the hour" fps :\
2014-07-31 22:36
also they like female chars and shining and glimmering weapons. So basicly a F2P game with things to pay ing which give you an advantage.

2014-07-31 23:20
good news for gaming i guess but having CS:go as a 'promotional' title is a joke. this is supposed to focus on international teams, not just the asian market, right? no reason not to have an FPS as an 'official' title...

Excellent news. If all goes well (and with the amount of viewers and competitors CSGO has atm it should go well) then it could become a main title.

Yep, but SF and MvC have more tournaments.
2014-08-01 14:27
If teams doesn't have the expenses covered. No one will go to China. The top 2 NA teams can barely make it EU LAN's and the same thing with the EU teams going to NA for ESEA. Should be expensive as fuck to send a full team to China for who knows what prize pool. Good luck with that !
2014-08-01 04:52
Teams find a way.
2014-08-01 05:16
The top 2 NA teams are from poor organisations or organisations that don't want to pay the money to send them to events. Top tier EU teams have no issues traveling. VP, Navi & NiP can go to China. The exposure you get going to China is probably worth more than the price money.
2014-08-01 13:18
with 2,000,000 rmb (250,000 euro) at stake I think some teams will be happy to make this investment
2014-08-02 18:44
I hope this brings up a good scene in China, for a real growth we also need the Asian market to be interested in the game enough.
