fnatic to final over dignitas
fnatic are through to the grand final of ESL One Cologne following a 2-0 victory over dignitas (16-11 on de_dust2, 16-14 on de_overpass).
On de_dust2, fnatic, who started out on the less-favored CT side, looked very lively in the early stages of the match and won the pistol round with ease while losing just one player.
The fourth round also went fnatic’s way, mostly because of Olof "olofmeister" Kajbjer, who stopped dignitas’ rush on short with three kills before his team-mates finished the job. Despite not being able to plant the bomb the round before, dignitas still bought guns and went again to A, only to be outgunned by fnatic a second time.
dignitas then closed the gap a little bit by picking up two rounds in a row, but the Danes were stunned by Freddy "KRIMZ" Johansson’s triple kill in the B area the following round. Once again down by three rounds, dignitas turned to the A site once again, and Henrik "FeTiSh" Christensen cleared the path for his team with two AWP kills from distance in long.
Markus "pronax" Wallsten then turned into an action hero and rushed middle, getting three kills to his name. The Swedish side were now in control of proceedings, but they were completely caught off-guard in the last two rounds by FeTiSh, who followed up a quad kill in the 14th with a 1-on-3 clutch in the last round of the half to give dignitas a fighting chance at 6-9.
In the second half, dignitas pieced the first two rounds together to reduce the deficit to just one round, but then fnatic got on a massive winning streak and claimed four rounds in a row.
dignitas still found a lifeline when they picked up two rounds in succession, the second of which thanks to Peter "dupreeh" Rasmussen getting four kills in B, but three kills from Jesper "JW" Wecksell and four from olofmeister in the following two rounds gave fnatic a 16-11 victory.
Next up was de_overpass, fnatic’s choice of map, and this seemed at first like a huge gamble from the Swedish side, considering they had scraped a narrow 19-16 victory against Virtus.pro in the groups.
fnatic, who began on the Terrorist side, came out strongly and won the pistol round but the Swedes then fell short against dignitas’ CZ75 eco, with FeTiSh getting three kills to his name.
dignitas were able to string two more rounds together, but then a triple kill from Robin "flusha" Rönnquist and a double from olofmeister put a stop to the Danes’ streak. For a brief moment, that is, as FeTiSh’s side would go on to win a whopping six rounds in a row to go up 10-2. fnatic then won the following two rounds, but a combination of MAG-7s and CZ75s by dignitas saw the Danish team take an 11-4 lead into the second half.
Things went from bad to worse for fnatic right after they were downed by dignitas in the pistol round following a B push, but pronax’s side gave a great response and pulled one back in the first eco round.
Confidence started building up in fnatic as they reduced the deficit little by little until parity was restored on 12 rounds. At that point, dignitas decided to go for a fast B push, a strategy that caught their opponents by surprise, with Philip "aizy" Aistrup winning the round for his team in a 1-on-2 situation, with the second kill coming in at just 1 HP.
dignitas followed that up with another B rush that wreaked havoc in fnatic’s defensive lines to make it 14-12, but they were unable to seal the deal: in the following round, they were outgunned by fnatic’s shotguns in A, and then the Swedish team proved to be mentally stronger in the decisive moments as they walked away with a 16-14 victory.
