adreN handed two day ban by ESEA

Liquid player Eric "adreN" Hoag has been handed a two-day ban from ESEA for a "Pro League Conduct Policy Violation," in this case excessive pausing of an official ESEA ESL Pro League match.

In a world where DDOS attacks are a recurring and daily phenomenon, in-game pauses occasionally go beyond their desired limit as affected players seek ways to reconnect to the game.

However, with tournaments such as the ESEA ESL Pro League increasingly depending on streamlined schedules in order to appeal to viewers who are expecting on-time matches, the amount of leeway given to pauses is usually only limited to ones relating to a tactical nature.

The ESEA League rules themselves specify teams being "limited to 1 pause per each regulation period and 1 pause per each overtime set," but it is not fully clear if these rules directly extend to the Pro League itself.

adreN receives a two-day ban from ESEA

In any case, issues relating to DDOS and match pauses came to an unfortunate head last night, when a match between Liquid and eLevate saw Liquid player Kyle "flowsicK" Mendez suffer from connection issues.

As a result, Liquid captain Eric "adreN" Hoag attempted to pause the match more than once, which eLevate agreed to in word. However, ESEA decided to ban the player for the pauses, which can be seen on adreN's profile as a "Pro league Conduct Policy Violation."

*Update* ESEA have come forward with clarification on the matter, indicating that the issue and reason for the ban was Liquid receiving a warning during communication with the game admin that they would not be able to pause anymore. The team chose to ignore the warning and go ahead with another pause, and hence the punitive action from ESEA.

What is the point of two days ban? Better take 10% away from their prize pool, of course, if they win.
2015-06-10 15:44
Yeah man... let's take 10% of their prize pool away for pausing the game. Do you think before you type such dribble?
2015-06-10 16:06
wow
2015-06-10 15:44
Yeah lets start banning people because of DDoS pauses when both teams are alright with it. The DDoSers are gonna keep doing it and now when they can ban people with it. It will only be worse. Gj ESEA.
2015-06-10 15:45
Why do they ban adreN when he was not the reason for the pausing? He just acted as a team captain.
2015-06-10 15:46
he got a ban for pausing multiple times after an admin told him to stop. the ban is a "professional conduct" ban. disobeying an admin is not professional conduct
2015-06-10 15:50
Nice I hate AdreN anyway. He should stop being so cocky about the game being broken when his team is much more broken - at his command.

2015-06-10 19:07
"He should stop being so cocky about the game being broken" - the game IS broken, fuckwit.
2015-06-10 16:54
Is it the games problem that they can't win against european teams than? It seems many teams work around the "broken" game. This is why Liquid are so trash, being led by a person who doesn't see the issue within themselves and blame the game. See about the ban... its unfair to ban him because of DDoS issues. And what is sad is that there wouldn't be the trouble with pauses if CS wasn't controlled by a large moneymarket. Trying to keep up with streaming schedules means less viewership therefore less people will will be introduced to the sponsors, sponsors not getting their quota, streams not getting their quota less money etc. I didn't explain it well but in-short CS is just one huge market and that's all it is.
2015-06-11 15:05
oh yeah so wanting to improve the game makes him cocky. nice.

2015-06-10 15:47

2015-06-10 15:48
Okay, so when we get so many pauses and breaks during the games you guys lose your shit over it. When there is a rule present to prevent that and is actually enforced you guys cry about it too. There is no pleasing you guys, there is always something wrong to cry about. He got banned for whole 2 days. Calm yourselves.
2015-06-10 15:48
Not the same people. But this only encourages DDoSers and is plain stupid when both teams were okey with it.

It's not the job of the league to protect teams, to be fair. That's the job of the team. I understand the frustration, but it's not as if ESEA has some sort of obligation to all the teams in that regard. It's up to Keyd to protect themselves and make sure they can't receive DDOS attacks. Now I am not saying ESEA is right-I don't think that necessarily. But I can't see anything here as "wrong" in regards to obligations they have towards anyone. They're just doing their jobs essentially.

Brazil Collee
That's not what I'm talking about. Keyd played more than 10 matches before that, and they never needed to delay any of them. FalleN just wanted to delay 2 matches from yesterday and play them today, because they got DDoS protection today(or they'll get in a few hours). Just 2 matches, just 1 day difference, but ESEA didn't agree
2015-06-10 16:02

And that's my point. ESEA has no obligation to agree to delays even if they haven't had delays prior just because Keyd can't protect their players.

Yeah, like it would hurt someone to delay 2 matches for 1 day later... they have no obligation, that's right, but what kind of problem would they have accepting it? That would just benefit the league

Yeah, good job from them, they're just getting hate from the community and the pros doing the things they're doing. 1 day delay wouldn't hurt them, it would only benefit the league, since they would have fair matches instead of a match forfeited after only 3 rounds, we couldn't even see which team was better just because ESEA didn't accept a 24h delay

Let's put it this way: there are four more matches to be played tonight. To do what you suggest would mean reshuffling other matches(Keyd is playing tonight as well), playing earlier(might not be easily done if you want a stream), or perhaps at best playing two at once. That's a lot of hassle over one team having an issue completely unrelated to ESEA itself.

Is this all because they wouldn't play all games on ESEA's stream? They could play with no ESEA stream, bida would stream these 2 games instead. They didn't even played vs. tempo, only 3 rounds. We didn't even had a game
2015-06-10 16:59
Yea so lets have some random guy stream it, who more likely than not will speak Portuguese and then they lose have their audience. Oh im sure esea and their sponsors would agree to that....

Follow the rules - its not up to ESEA to protect the players from DDOS. Does it suck that players gets ddosed? Of course it does. But if they want to play on a top level, they have to protect themselves. Tournaments cannot adhere to the players, when they want to create a more professional scene and in the long run try to become mainstream. Fuck delays, we all hate them and more often than not, its the organizers that make the mistakes, but the players can do their part.

2015-06-10 16:45
dumb bcoz this ultimately supports the victim blaming ideology which is repulsive and should never be accepted.
2015-06-10 16:46
ESEA is a Fokin joke mate
2015-06-10 16:47
The teams should make an arrangement not to play that shitty league anymore. But they are too greedy for the money. So they shouldnt complain.

Its easy to defend against script kiddies, it will be impossible to defend against coordinated attacks if outcome is predictable by rules and can give money.

Couldn't agree more. Next up: 15 min buffer for games to start, if one team fails to ready up -> defwin for the opposing teams -> RIP delays

The only true solution to this problem is to find the DDOSers and hang them by their dick. I was going to say testicles but we all know they don't have any.

This is not a scrim, who cares if some silly boys are "ok" with it, pathetic!
2015-06-10 17:53
lol more power to the DDoSers I guess ... now if a ddos kicks a player once off the game and the team pauses till he reconnects and than he gets kicked again they either play 4v5 or teamcaptain gets banned for 2 matches ... what a joke

2015-06-10 18:01
Well law is a law, but this one is clearly fucked up. If guys are playing a match let them play it, both sides agreed on the pause because clearly they want fair play.

Really? Adren is that kind of guy? Anyway, rules are rules, right, but this kind of rule is dangerous for CS scene. This is grist to the mill for DDOSers.

First offense will result in a 48 hour Professional Conduct Policy ban, which will prevent you from visiting any website in the ESEA Network, but will allow you to participate in league matches, unless stated otherwise.
2015-06-10 20:29
esea is becoming a facism

2015-06-11 01:35
Wow. Sure, ESEA has no obligations to protect the teams, but this is a bit too much. Like people have said, if they're just script kiddies, sure DDoS protection isn't hard. But if they're serious DDoSers, big matches with ALOT at stake can have it's flow disrupted by this, on top of that, with that ban all they did was encourage the DDoSers to do it more when the stakes are high. It's extremely unfair that they even got a ban to begin with, but the fact that they did it only because they have a schedule to keep, their attitude being "Fuck the teams, we have too many matches". That's NOT how you run such a big tournament, on top of the teams in it being unhappy, even the fans/people watching feel the same way. That's how you mess up faith in the organizers. Sure it'll go on because there's no way the teams will leave willingly just because of that(plus the big prize pool), but for future tournaments, I'm sure i'm not the only one hoping that ESEA *NEVER* holds another one and that organizers like ESL do not partner up with them ever again. It's just like holding any event, the organizers might just be there to enforce the rules, but when you just don't give a single fuck even when people are there to compete in your event and are getting screwed-up by external human-made issues, EVERYONE gets pissed off. Even the viewers. It's the same thing with KEYD, from how some people said it, all they asked for was to move the matches 1 day later, yet it was apparently too hard for them. Anyone know what that's called? *LAZY*. Basically it would take some manpower and/or planning to move some matches around etc sure, but you know you're a SHITTY organizer when you don't give a damn what happens to TEAMS coming to play in YOUR event. "No responsibility for what happens to teams during the tournament?" That's what irresponsible, lazy, money-faced, power-abusing assholes will say. I feel like I'm watching some TV show, some organizers invite people to their tournament at a big house. A group arrives, people who disliked that group also came to the house, started fucking with them in like 10 different ways, totally messing their experience there up. The group complains to the organizers about it and all they could say was "That's non of our business, m8. You have to take care of yourselves and any problem you might encounter while here, we're not here to give a shit about you, we just care about the $$$". Like seriously? Classic scumbag responses. That is NO WAY to act as hosts of an event, no matter what might be the case. I mean I'm not even in it and I can just feel the rage, the utter anger and just all the disappointment for how the hosts are treating them. Instead of trying to help them against people disrupting against matches, they're turning around and screw with the team even further. Wow, just, Wooow. Now that I have a clear view of what kinda organization ESEA are like, I'd just like to say fuck them and their money-facedly uncaring ways, and whatever the hell they stand for, and I hope they go Bankrupt in the near future, so pros who've made it this far in their career, won't have to get buttfucked by them, ever again. Unbelievable. I've got nothing to do with this and even I feel the anger seeing how the pro players are treated. Fuck's sake.
2015-06-11 07:43
get paused bruh
