DreamHack Austin announced

July 8th, 2015 17:01

DreamHack has officially confirmed that it will expand to North America with an event in Austin, Texas.

The multi-purpose Austin Convention Center is the venue selected to host DreamHack's first event outside of Europe, which was teased in a video released by the Swedish company on Sunday.

DreamHack Austin, which will run from May 6-8 2016, will feature "all the core content pillars" that have made DreamHack one of the most popular event organisers in the world, including international esports tournaments, it was confirmed.

The Austin Convention Center will host DreamHack's first event in North America

DreamHack CEO Marcus Lindmark stated that the company had long wished to expand to North America and revealed that a second event in the continent could be announced soon.

"DreamHack is a global phenomenon and our esports tournaments already have hundreds of millions of viewers around the globe, with the United States always being the country having the most viewership," Lindmark said in a statement.

"It’s been our ambition to expand to North America for a very long time, and today we are thrilled to get the ball rolling by announcing a date and venue for our first event.

"It’s our ambition to host a second event in another region of North America in 2016 as well, we are very excited to keep ramping things up."

For more information about DreamHack Austin, check out the event's official website. Early bird LAN and visitor tickets will be available on September 15.

I don't see why not... Decent international hub for north and south america that's not Dallas. I just hope theres not a music festival there that week. Austin can get really crowded around that time during sxsw/acl/psych fest etc
2015-07-08 18:02
It's Austin. There's a music festival every damn day.

Why Texas think about it NY or CA has so many large arenas to hold an event like this also esea why you do dis
2015-07-08 17:05
Austin has a really large Tech scene and is actually really nice. I think this is a better choice than going with NY tbh, though Cali would be just as good for sure.
2015-07-08 17:07
They should have chosen the Dallas Cowboys stadium...could you imagine CS on that huge ass screen they have??
2015-07-08 17:11
They let conan play games on that. Why not a cs tourney amirite
2015-07-08 18:25
You think Austin doesn't? Only think I don't get is why Austin instead of Dallas. Maybe because Austin is so much more liberal and easier to work with city government? At least people in this area have something to replace ESEA LAN since ESL stole that event and fucked the formatting.
2015-07-08 17:28
Austin's a pretty big tech hub, lots of companies there. Maybe they had a lot of local support.
2015-07-09 02:44
NY and CA are moneyless shitholes. Austin is growing, has hipsters, tons of tech firms and is awfully liberal for a place in Texas. It's awfully liberal for a city in the US, even.

Can they host an Open CSGO tournament there? Would be cool if some lesser known teams got the chance to get out of the huge open bracket and face a top team ;)

You know, It's not a bad idea. But they might do a byoc qualifier for the main event.

LAN PARTY The BYOC (bring your own computer) LAN party is the lifeblood of DreamHack. Whether you just want to chill out and game for 3 days, participate in tournaments, or meet new people, the LAN party is the ultimate social experience for a gamer looking for an awesome weekend I think there will be an open tourney. Looking for team that wants to share last place and get piss drunk with me

Going for sure, kinda glad it's not LA/NYC like I expected. Austin is a really liberal city filled with young people. They host a few large music festivals each year and it seems like a really cool place.

Yeah, San Diego. They have Comic Con there in a pretty big convention center. I was thinking it'd be perfect :D. I had my doubts though, I knew they'd pick a more central location in the country.
