EnVyUs have been crowned the Gfinity Champion of Champions after defeating fnatic 3-2 (16-12 on de_cobblestone, 16-6 on de_mirage, 12-16 on de_train, 13-16 on de_inferno and 16-9 on de_cache).
The action kicked off on de_cobblestone, where fnatic, who began on the CT side of the map, picked up the opening pistol round. The Swedes were, however, unable to capitalise on that as a Tec9 push saw EnVyUs equalise the score. In gun play, the rounds that fnatic managed to get were few and far between, which allowed EnVyUs to control the economy and take an 11-4 lead to the break.
The second half began with fnatic winning the pistol round and the following anti-ecos, but the Swedish team fell part when it was time for EnVyUs to buy. The Frenchmen would take the scoreline to 14-7, but then fnatic responded by stringing a few rounds together, one of which thanks to a sensational four-kill by olofmeister in B.
With the scoreline 14-11 in favour of EnVyUs, the French team called a timeout, and the move paid off as they ended fnatic's streak thanks to Fiveseven ace by kennyS. The following round would go fnatic's way, but then EnVyUs stalled the Swedes just enough for time to run out, sealing a 16-12 victory.
EnVyUs are the Gfinity Champion of Champions
The map that followed was de_mirage, where after an initial period that was highly contested, EnVyUs took control of the game, ending the first half up 10-5. fnatic kept themselves alive in the game by winning the following pistol round, but then they collapsed during an anti-eco round, giving the Frenchmen the chance to claim a 16-6 victory and take a 2-0 lead in the series.
Next up was de_train, where fnatic opened up the game with an outstanding CT half, leading 12-3 by halftime. EnVyUs picked themselves up in the second half and closed the gap on their opponents, but they fell short in the dying stages, losing the game 12-16.
The fourth map was de_inferno, where a strong start from EnVyUs saw them take a 10-5 lead at the break after playing on the CT side. Many believed that this was the Frenchmen's game to lose, but fnatic gave an impressive account of themselves in the second half to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat and tie up the series 2-2.
It all came down to de_cache, the final map of this exciting series. The first half was played at a very high pace as teams literally traded round for round, with EnVyUs holding on to an 8-7 lead. The Frenchmen grew the lead by winning the pistol round, but then they were dealt a huge blow as a full buy from fnatic paid off. Still, fnatic were unable to build on this round win as they were caught off-guard by a Tec9 rush from EnVyUs, who would go on to win seven of the next eight rounds en route to a 16-9 finish.
