ESL One Cologne 2016 with $250,000

ESL has announced that it will host a $250,000 CS:GO tournament in Cologne in the summer.

Scheduled for July 8-10, ESL One Cologne 2016 will take place at the iconic Lanxess arena, which hosted the playoffs of this year's event after the group matches were played at the MMC studios.

ESL believes that the event will continue to represent "the world’s largest Counter-Strike tournament" after the 2015 edition shattered all records, with 27 million unique viewers and a peak viewership of 1.3 million people.

ESL One Cologne returns to the Lanxess Arena

There was no mention of the event possibly being a major, but there is still plenty of time for ESL to reach an agreement with Valve. The only 2016 major confirmed so far will be hosted by MLG from March 29 to April 3 in Columbus, Ohio.

"ESL One Cologne 2015 remains an industry-record-holding event that saw epic moments realised both onscreen and off," ESL Pro Gaming vice-president Ulrich Schulze said in a statement.

"We’re working hard at making the world’s largest Counter-Strike tournament an even greater success in 2016 and look forward to furthering our company’s long-lasting commitment to the game."

Tickets for ESL One Cologne will go on sale on Wednesday, December 9, exclusively on Eventim. From Saturday onwards, they can also be bought via all associated ticket agencies in Germany.

General admission tickets cost €39.90, while premium tickets are priced at €299. There is also a €2,999 pack, called "Global Elite Experience", which includes tickets and a private lounge for five people.

ESL is not Valve. ESL have arranged a tournament, like the other years and they've chosen to put in 250.000$ in the pricepool. If Valve want to make it a major, like the other years, they'll add more money in the prizepool. The 250k are from ESL. It will grow if ESL and Valve can agree to make it a major.

CS:GO is not going to be rising if the major prizepools will still be the same. Holy shit DHW 2013 or Katowice 2014 already had $250 000 prizepool. WTF VOLVO?! The ammount of people throughout the years has gone bigger significantly so why are the prizepools still the same?! Stupid Dota has BASE prizepool $1,600,000...

Uhhm yes Csgo is continuing to grow? And prize pools will rise as well, just not the major prizepools, but we don't need Valve for good events (although sure, no sticker money affects the teams) AND this is not a major yet, the 250k are just from Esl.

Nothing more has been announced. ESL Cologne 2015 with 4.2 million in sticker money + prize pool is the mark to beat, and a non-major isn't gonna come close. If you have a source that says the prize pool will be much more than 250k, please cite it, and please don't say crowd funding. Crowdfunding for no reward with no Valve backing isn't gonna magically turn that 250k into a million, let's be real here.

Dubai major was slightly bigger than 250k (250k +Dubai Tower trip). Valves MC series is not the biggest and in a few months they will not be even in top3 (after Dubai, WC X and Turner?).

If I can recall correctly, those tickets are basically VIP extreme treatment. ESL personally fly you out to the arena for a week or a couple of days and put you in a good hotel. You get to have access to the back stage of the arena and meet the players as well as play a couple games with them and basically just chat about things. Don't quote me on this, but I believe that is what "The Global Experience" tickets are. I'm pretty sure hotel and air fares are taken care of as well. Hope this clears up some confusion people are having on this.

2015-12-09 02:26
Having Lanxess arena as venue must cost a fortune, + all building the scenes, technicians, the host, people at the desk, equipment, backstage people, conductors, security and other staff. It's def. not cheap and they need some profit as well.

exactly. I don't get why everyone is bummed out. I believe these players already earn a decent amount. Sure a 20 million prize pool would maybe motivate some players to do their extra best, but still - what does that change for us though? Give me a 250k or 100k(for all I care) tournament every 2 months with top teams and I'm happy. Actually you know what - fucking spend that money on anti-cheat measures, how about that. This scene is full of cheating accusations that it makes me sick. Tbh I dont blame the scene for thinking some pro's cheat - simply coz the current AC measures are shit

because the team that plays the best deserves the most money, take the g2 example in the major, their pickems % was so low in every matchup meaning didn't have amazing sticker sales... however a team like c9 or fnatic most likely got way more money than them for stickers even though they didn't make the semi's like g2 the sticker system is just a popularity contest, the prize pool should be representing the level of the esport and the tournament, its embarrassing that dota gets $18mil while csgo keeps getting $250k

That's not the point. c9, titan, tsm, fnatic didn't deserve half of what they got, meanwhile navi, g2, luminosity all got shat on because of the 250k prize pool. This is a buisness and teams who put together good rosters should get more than ones who underpefrm or have a bunch of posterboys...

yeah but what I want to ask, why are you so worried they are getting underpaid when they win a tournament? Or finish 3rd or 4th or whatever? it doesn't concern us one bit and neither do we(as spectators) gain anything from it

its nice to see teams succeed in results and the rewards that those results bring... how do you not see that team a doing worse than team b, but getting more money is wrong? this is a terrible system that needs to change its also a statement about the prestige of the game, dota is a more prestigious esport because of the international, and teams try REALLY hard for it, if you know this fact, the tournament is way more enjoyable because of the stakes and not just "they won a major"... its almost like you don't understand the core concept of a prize...
2015-12-08 19:33
how about as an organisation you spend that money in making the tournaments better? taking better drug and AC measurements? improving the game(better performance optimization, better MM, faster improvements to bugs etc)? Making the game free of charge? There is so much more you can do with that amount of money in stead of giving to the players, THAT already get loads of with streaming/stickers etc You need to think about yourself, not about the pro's.
2015-12-08 19:18
1 reply
what? the system which pays the teams for being in the tournament is broken and its up to valve to fix that, not esl... valve employ the sticker system when i would like to have an aditional esports case system that would boost the prize money for ALL TEAMS + its not like "we will but 2x amount of money into X and it will be twice as good", There is only so much you can do. and it isn't like an organiser can't have a bigger prize pool AND a good tournament... Judging by the fact that esl can afford to do $250k tournaments already with a tenth of the viewers, that is telling you that they are earning a lot from these majors, as well as valve. You can have the best of both worlds.

WHY CAN'T MICRO$OFT take over CS:GO?
2015-12-08 18:29
So, is this a major? Sad to still see it at $250,000 whilst the Turner League will be dropping 1.6 million PER season and TWICE a year. Not to forget that isn't even a major! Just a televised leauge. Step up your game ESL.
2015-12-08 18:30
turner dropping 1.2 per season and esl cant offer more than 250k? cmon

2015-12-08 19:18
250k is from ESL alone noobs, since it is not confirmed a major. If it's a major (which it obviously will be) then valve will add their own 250k at a minimum

I doubt it
2015-12-08 19:30
It was the same last time. They announced 250K, Valve made it official major, still 250K

Looks like we needed the TV money and Faceit and others to step it up after all. Because the ESL are lazy cunts and can't be arsed to give a shit about CS.

They need Source 2 or HL3 to be confirmed to raise prize pool.
2015-12-08 21:45

I think it would be easier if they just stated "ESL One Cologne 2016-2048 with $250 000"
2015-12-08 22:24
Remember this is 250k without valve sponsoring it, it only says that ESL will host a 250k tournament and i also imagine that valve will also be a part of Cologne so the pricepool might even be 500k-1m.
