Starladder reveals CIS minor details

MIRAA
December 13th, 2015 18:11

Starladder has released information about the CIS Minor, which will feature $50,000 in prize money.

Following up the announcements about the European, the American and the Asian minors, Starladder has finally shed some light on the CIS regional event, open to teams from 15 countries from Eastern Europe.

The road to the CIS Minor begins with two online qualifiers, each one open to 512 teams. Both tournaments will use a best-of-one, single-elimination format, with the map being determined by a veto.

The top four sides from each open qualifier will secure spots at a closed tournament, in which they will be joined by eight sides invited by Starladder. This qualifier will kick off with a group stage, featuring four groups of four teams, followed by a single-elimination bracket.

Four teams from this qualifier will make it to the CIS Minor, which will be held in Minsk from January 22-24. Rounding out the eight-team list of participants will be four invited sides.

Below you can find the dates for the CIS Minor and its qualifiers:

  • Open Qualifier #1 - December 17-18 - Sign up
  • Open Qualifier #2 - December 19-20 - Sign up
  • Closed Qualifier - December 21-27
  • CIS Minor - January 22-24

Teams from the following countries are allowed to compete in the qualifiers for the CIS Minor, provided that they do not feature players who attended DreamHack Open Cluj-Napoca:

Russia Russia Belarus Belarus Georgia Georgia
Latvia Latvia Moldova Moldova Armenia Armenia
Lithuania Lithuania Kyrgyzstan Kyrgyzstan Azerbaijan Azerbaijan
Estonia Estonia Other Tajikistan Uzbekistan Uzbekistan
Ukraine Ukraine Kazakhstan Kazakhstan Other Turkmenistan

Information about the venue and the format for the CIS Minor will be revealed by Starladder shortly. The $50,000 prize pool for the tournament will be distributed as follows:

1. $30,000
2. $15,000
3-4. $2,500

Yeah, but not by our own will. After we became free, we chose to join EU instead of CIS (by our will).

Although Ukraine was one of the founding countries and ratified the Creation Agreement in December 1991, Ukraine chose not to ratify the CIS Charter as it disagrees with Russia being the only legal successor to the Soviet Union. Thus it does not regard itself as a member of the CIS. In 1993 Ukraine became an "Associate Member" of CIS. On March 14, 2014, a bill was introduced to Ukraine's parliament to denounce their ratification of the 1991 Agreement Establishing the CIS, following the Russian military intervention in Ukraine and annexation of Crimea, but was never approved. Following the 2014 parliamentary election, a new bill to denounce the CIS agreement was introduced. In September 2015 the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed Ukraine will continue taking part in CIS "on a selective basis". Since that month Ukraine has no representatives in the CIS Executive Committee building. I'd say: It's complicated.

Qualifier for the qualifier to the qualifier to the major, got it. Also, invites at two of the stages. This system is so needlessly complex imo.
