ESL ban jumpthrow, tweak deathcam

ESL have changed a couple of important CS:GO rules in their ruleset that will affect all levels of gameplay across the company's platform of tournaments.

A new set of rule changes related to CS:GO were published by ESL today and they will come into effect for all ESL-related tournaments, from amateur online leagues such as Go4CS:GO or the ESL Open League to more prestigious tournaments such as the Intel Extreme Masters, ESL One events, and the ESL ESEA Pro League.

The German-based organisation arrived at a consensus to change these rules after apparent discussions with partners (which can be taken to include ESEA) as well as with an official players' union.

All ESL tournaments, big and small, will enforce the new rules 

In particular, four changes have been made:

  • Round and bomb timers have been set to 1:55 and 0:40 respectively, in accordance with Valve's changes to these times for the game developers' Major and Minor events.
  • The deathcam has been shortened to two seconds after internal discussions and discussions with players.
  • The end of round delay (after a new round starts once a round has finished) has been shortened to three seconds.
  • Jumpthrow scripts have been forbidden after a vote from players was in favour of banning.

In particular, the banning of jumpthrow scripts and shortening of the deathcam will have a large impact on competitive play as these two issues were quite hot button topics in the community in regards to their respective, perceived unfairness.

Jumpthrow scripts are alias-based commands that players can add to their configs in order to jump and throw grenades with exact precision, rather than manual timing which relies on near frame-perfect execution.

ESL have added that the new rules have already come into effect for the IEM Katowice qualifiers currently taking place on ESEA's client, and remaining tournaments will begin to enforce the rules starting Monday, January 18th on 11:00.

The only scenario's in which this would happen was if the T side is defending the bomb for too long, not paying attention to the timer. A CT that dies due to bomb expl is just in the wrong place, because why are you close to the bomb if you can't defuse it?

It happens far too often, especially when players are on low HP and bomb radius' are weird. It wouldn't affect the CTs much - it would affect the Ts the most. I think it's a positive change.

Pretty much every pro. Because it was legal, everybody was using it to not be at disadvantage even tough they think it's cheap. It's gonna remove an important strategic aspect and for example mirage mid is gonna be harder to take as Terrorist. If you think jumpthrow is easy you obviously don't know smokes that need frame perfect throw.

They apparently didn't like jumpthrow and for good reason. They don't mention deathcam and timings since everyone will have to get used to it, but it's definitely for the better. I wonder if any top teams are really going to be affected by this negatively.

Cool. I always felt jump-scripts were in a gray area of cheating that someone would come out and at some point bad. In a way, sort of like map exploits in its "grayness". I think shortening the shortening to between rounds to 3 seconds will actually hurt many teams, especially when they have to play a much stronger team. Perhaps this was the point: to help betting? Not sure the rationale behind this except to make it harder for lesser teams to compete.

U can still make your config.cfg writeprotected and enter the jumpthrow via console. Wont be saved in your .cfg so theres no proof for that. Just reenter it everytime u launch the game. German engineering

I love the death cam change, but the other two seem kinda dumb. The fact of the matter is most pro teams don't rely on complex smoke strats and therefor don't need jump throw binds - of course they will vote to remove them to fuck over slower teams like Na'Vi. Theres going to be a lot less innovative CS play and a lot more raw aim coming out of these matches now. Don't think I like that. And I really hate them using Valve's new timer shit. Pro players shouldn't have to adjust their style for people who aren't as good as they are. Valve is moronic forcing this on teams and on leagues.

I know it seems natural to extend timers with addition of molotovs to the game but I also think that this change benefits teams that are ahead because of their cost. You nerf M4A1S to the ground not to get game so much CT sided and than make changes more comfortable to them because of possibility of T to throw after plant molotov on bomb... You also force players to take duels much more because of timers - to make them buy more time to complete rounds. On the other hand CTs are less likely to win raw aim duels because worse primary gun. Are we shifting to AUG meta again to get CTs more confident on mid-round duels?
