Liquid upset FaZe in Columbus

Team Liquid have pulled off the first upset at MLG Columbus after defeating FaZe 16-11 on de_cache.

The first round of Group B at the MLG Columbus Major brought the first surprising result of the tournament as FaZe, semi-finalists at DreamHack Open Cluj-Napoca while under G2, fell short against Liquid. The North American side punished FaZe for their mistakes and did so thanks to a dominant display from Eric "adreN" Hoag, who is acting as a substitute for the team after being left out of the starting roster with Kenneth "koosta" Suen's signing.

The map began with Liquid winning the pistol round with ease following an A push, and they followed it up with the resulting anti-eco rounds to start off the game with a 3-0 lead. Their fantastic run on the Terrorist side continued as Spencer "Hiko" Martin picked up four kills during a B hold to punish FaZe, who wasted a two-man lead.

After going on eco, FaZe were finally able to hold back the Americans, picking up two rounds in a row to reduce the deficit to 2-5, but then they were stunned by Liquid courtesy of a 1vs3 clutch from adreN. The 25-year-old would raise eyebrows just a few rounds later with another crucial quad-kill, with the scoreline blooming to an 8-2 advantage for the home side.

Liquid triumph over FaZe with a great performance from adreN

Håvard "rain" Nygaard then put FaZe back in the game with a quad kill, but Liquid hit back right after to reset the economy of their opponents. FaZe would call a tactical pause in a bid to halt Liquid's momentum, but the North American side kept their foot on the gas until the end of the half and took a commanding 12-3 lead.

The second half began with FaZe getting off to a blazing fast start, winning seven rounds in a row as Liquid struggled to keep up with the intensity of the Europeans. FaZe's winning streak then came to an end following a clean sweep from Liquid, who followed it would with another round thanks to a timely triple kill from Nick "nitr0" Cannella inside A.

With the scoreline 14-10 in favour of Liquid, FaZe responded and picked up a round, but Liquid remained in the driving seat and sealed the deal shortly later.

It is because FaZe (former kinguin and G2) have always been through the group stage while Liquid didnt in any of their majors, FaZe were semifinalists in the last major only losing against the champions (2-1 with a really close Inferno map ) and FaZe have more individual skill than Liquid, so yeah you can consider an upset, Liquid never proved themselves while FaZe already did :)

"always" being twice, and this is a liquid with s1mple - a player who until now only played in 1 major, dhw14 with hr, where he got to quarter finals. faze lost 13 of their last 14 maps, how can you say they were favored vs liquid? g2's run at cluj was a fluke, their next 5 months proved that.

by that logic fnatic beating nip at katowice 2015 was an upset
2016-03-31 01:13
No because at that time both teams had 1 major lmfao Liquid are better than FaZe ATM but overall (meaning the past and individual skill) FaZe are better, what did Liquid do in the international plan?

well as i pointed out - s1mple never failed in majors group stages, and actually beat fnatic twice now in majors. its not the same teams, its not logical to say it was an upset.
2016-03-31 01:17
Because of 1 player you say its 100% different? So you're saying that if you add a player that has already won a major to a shitty African team they re going to win one..

s1mple is the kind of player that completely changes how a team plays, just like niko or guardian. you have to admit that this liquid would wreck the liquid of 6 months ago. no im not saying a major winning player +4 would be a noteworthy team, adding a player that won a major wont do anything - you can make a lineup of devilwalk, fifflaren, friberg, xizt, and pronax and they wont even qualify to the major. what i am saying is that you cant say this is basically the same liquid. im also saying its not entirely true that faze is more skilled, considering they are in a slump and only really have 3 really good players - jkaem rain and aizy. liquids players are fairly even in skill, considering how good s1mple nitr0 and hiko have performed in the past on lan.

NOT AN UPSET
2016-03-29 20:50
A challenger beating a legend, that is an upset by definition. But nice try
2016-03-29 21:00
its not an upset given both teams recent form. if ur gonna argue like that everytime fnatic rapes nip its an upset because 87-0 hurr
2016-03-29 21:04
Nice argument, because fnatic isnt the best by far team in the world AND a legend in the pool. What a moron.
2016-03-29 21:06
BUT THATS MY POINT. faze havent won fuck all in a good while and looked garbage whereas liquid clearly showed some positivity and synergy. so you cant even call it an upset. which, if you look at the comments, a shitton of people agree on.
2016-03-29 21:16
Liquid are a challenger team playing with a stand-in. Faze are a legend team playing with their full roster. Despite team's recent form, its obviously an upset. Not a big upset at all, but still an upset.
2016-03-29 21:26
Boy,are you retarded?FaZe playing with 3 bots in a team(lelele, fox,Jkm) and haven't shown anything in 2016,wheres liquid have everyone online and won against pretty good amount of teams. They'r legends only because of Cluj, dat happened like half a year before.
2016-03-30 05:10
And im the one whos retarded? Get a brain homie.
2016-03-30 14:43
No? FaZe were invited to the major because legends, and Liquid qualified because challengers. Are you completely fucking new?
2016-03-29 21:06
Yeah but I wouldn't say G2 or C9 beating Virtus Pro would be an upset. I think liquid and faze had been around the same level before entering the tournament.
2016-03-29 21:12
Doesn't change the fact, that a CHALLENGER beating a LEGEND is an upset. It's the very definition of the word. Your thoughts about their current form doesn't mean anything. Invites vs qualifier - qualifier wins - that's an upset.
2016-03-29 21:15
That is NOT the definition of an upset.. why you pull that random shit out of your ass? An upset is an unexpected result, this was not an unexpected result, regardless of who is invite or qualifier.
2016-03-29 21:17
"[countable] (in a competition) a situation in which a person or team beats the person or team that was expected to win" FaZe was seeded 3-4th because of their results at Cluj-Napoca, Liquid was seeded 9-16th. What is your definition of an upset?
2016-03-29 21:20
nigga, faze wan't expected to win this one even tho they are legends. -> this clearly wasn't an upset. (the results from Cluj doesn't matter in the debate if the match was an upset or not because Cluj was so long ago already that the faze today has become shit)
2016-03-29 21:25
FaZe was seeded 3-4th, if the results from Cluj didn't matter - then there would be no seeding. But then again, you just game to suck your friends dick. :-)
2016-03-29 21:30
you're just repeating the same things over and over again
2016-03-29 21:33
Apparently I have to??
2016-03-29 21:34
i guess i have to repeat what brendanfraser said too. the seeding received from cluj doesn't matter because it happened such a long time ago. what do you not understand?
2016-03-29 21:36
seed noun (SPORT) > especially in tennis, a good player who is given a place on the list of those expected to win games in a particular competition because of the way they have played in the past. >"expected to win games" >FaZe didn't win >upset.jpg
2016-03-29 21:40
in this case the "past event" was so far back in the past as to be currently irrelevant. using tennis terms, it was as if we gave pete sampras top seed in a current tournament because he won the us open in 2002.
2016-03-29 21:42
It is the most recent thing they have the possibility of drawing results from? What are you on? Do you want them to make seedings based on online form and random guesswork? Seriously what
2016-03-29 21:43
i'm not critiquing the seeding process, i'm saying that the current seeding doesn't completely reflect how strong the teams are.
2016-03-29 21:44
I will just copypaste this, for retards: FaZe playing with 3 bots in a team(lelele, fox,Jkm) and haven't shown anything in 2016,wheres liquid have everyone online and won against pretty good amount of teams. They'r legends only because of Cluj, dat happened like half a year before.

~65% odds on faze clearly shows that they WERE expected to win this.
2016-03-29 21:37
What you say may be true, but we are arguing about whether it was an upset or not here.. and like I fucking said, following your definition it may be an upset, but given both teams recent form, it clearly wasnt and thats what matters more IMO.
2016-03-29 21:14
"what matters more "IN MY OPINION"". Nice save. Trying to battle the definition of a word, and then trying to save it by dropping the IMO at the end. You should go into politics.
2016-03-29 21:16
Save from what, you are pulling shit out of your ass. An upset is an unexpected result. To anyone who followed both teams it wasnt. To the majority of the public it was (hence the retarded odds), so yeah I guess you can call it an upset by that definition. But your qualifier vs invite bullshit is completely fucking irrelevant. Long story short, the public is retarded.
2016-03-29 21:20
#156 Nice try though. The amount of lacking education is strong in this one.
2016-03-29 21:20
"[countable] (in a competition) a situation in which a person or team beats the person or team that was expected to win" well GUESS WHAT? FAZE WASNT EXPECTED TO WIN BY ANYONE WITH A CLUE. I repeat: An upset is an unexpected result. To the public it was an upset. To anyone with a clue it wasnt. Fucking end of.
2016-03-29 21:23
"FaZe was seeded 3-4th" You are tunnelvisioning. An angry mind is a narrow mind. What triggered you so badly?
2016-03-29 21:29
You can repeat that seeding bs however often you want. I'll just repeat my point then, which clearly is more relevant. An upset is an unexpected result. To the public it was an upset. To anyone with a clue it wasnt. End of.
2016-03-29 21:35
You are actually so narrowminded it physically hurts me. "To the public it was an upset. To anyone with a clue it wasnt." Jesus christ.
2016-03-29 21:36
I am narrowminded? You are arguing about the fucking definition of an upset. I already agreed with you, what more do you want? It doesnt change the fact that the majority of those faze bettors ignored both teams development and form, which is all I am saying. Fucking moron.
2016-03-29 21:39
#181 Argue with a dictionary. You should actually try to open anything educational. Just once.
2016-03-29 21:41
Why even talk if you are just gonna repeat yourself and ignroe everything I said? Are you that dumb? And that bored?
2016-03-30 01:16
Its still an upset.they are a higher ranked team with more experience and better Players pound for pound (based on past Performances, debatable now i think).same applies to vp
2016-03-29 21:10
Based on history - perhaps. Not based on recent form tho. To the public it was an upset. To anyone with a clue it wasnt, end of.

2016-03-29 21:26
Ye i Agree but liquid doesnt have the lan results to back it up. Recent Form should be considered but it should still be called and treated like an upset although we might See it coming
2016-03-29 22:42
I mean yeah its an upset per definition as the public favoured faze.. but that was a mistake on the publics side :P
2016-03-30 01:16
:D
2016-03-30 02:10
You do realize if faze had 1 more player hitting his shots liquid would have lost right?
2016-03-30 03:10
jkaem? yeah he woulda made a big difference normally. but everyime he and rain dont, nothing works. also i feel maikel and fox are just 2bad
2016-03-30 03:12
Rain is one of the most consistent players in the scene imo. I agree that maikel just isnt performing up to standard.
2016-03-30 03:35
You do realize koosta isn't even playing in this tournament, right? And FaZe still got manhandled on their CT side. They were losing this map no matter what.

2016-03-29 20:52
adreN looks a completely different player when he doesn't need to call. i don't think this was a fluke, tbh. while he may not play this well, he could still be consistent.
2016-03-29 20:52
"upset" lol Like it wasn't obvious that FaZe is extremly shit right now.

don't get me wrong i don't agree with his statement just this match they (fox and jakem made Faze to lose the game being insignificant on CT) like the eco that made them to lose momentum he got picked by a deagle overpeeking when was not necessary. Shit happens i believe they still can make it

well this is dumb. instead of looking at s1mple's stats, look at how he played tactically and positively during lots of the rounds. he played very smart and would give liquid advantages by wasting time or flashing for teammates. he has adapted into more of a support role in liquid, and is damn good at it.

^^
2016-03-30 14:47

2016-03-29 20:59
How's this an upset, only a blind man would bet on faze on their current status and above all with liquid playing this good
2016-03-29 21:00

adreN had a good game, but koosta is still a better choice for TL. Younger, bigger potential
2016-03-29 21:13
Guess thoorin cant bash adren anymore
2016-03-29 21:15
not that big an upset tho
2016-03-29 21:15
nt hltv but it aint an upset
2016-03-29 21:17
Hm not sure why this is an upset to me liquid had an edge over face even though adren is plaing. He already proved in the qualifier that if he doesnt lead the team and just frags he does a great job. Gg liquid. Expected win.
2016-03-29 21:19
