Gambit beat Astralis, become Legends

Gambit have advanced to the quarter-finals at ESL One Cologne after beating Astralis 16-6 on Dust2.

The first match of the second day in Cologne was a winners' match between Astralis who beat Dignitas, and Gambit who defeated CLG in their opening match.

The battleground to determine the first quarter-finalist was on Dust2 and Gambit started out on the T-side. The Russian team picked up the pistol round after Dauren "AdreN" Kystaubayev's entry kill and were able to secure the anti-ecos.

AdreN & co. acquire Legend status

Despite giving up two opening kills to Lukas "gla1ve" Rossander in the first weapon round, Gambit snatched it and then made it 5-0. Nicolai "device" Reedtz clutched a 1vs2 to give his team their third round and Astralis later tied it at 5-5. Mihail "Dosia" Stolyarov replied with a 1vs2 clutch of his own to take back the lead and Gambit led 9-6 at halftime.

A triple kill by Rustem "mou" Telepov in the second half pistol round extended Gambit's lead to 10-6 and they made it 12-6 after cleaning up the anti-eco and the early weapon purchase of the Danes.

Gambit picked up two more rounds to make it 14-6 which triggered an Astralis timeout. It didn't work though as Gambit closed out the match 16-6, advancing to the quarter-finals.

If you choose to lose both pistols and the upcomming gunround in both halfs, you gonna have a bad time... On the other hand, I know Astralis is using gla1ve as a standin, but it is still criticizable that they can't play a map such as Cache, so they have to go for D2 vs. Cyka Blyats.

Astralis with a standin topping the charts, losing to the 20th ranked team in the world. This looks really, really bad. If they manage to lose to CLG/Dignitas the future of the company/org could very well come to an end. Surely the key performance indicators have not been fulfilled and the investors cannot be satisfied with the situation.

Isn't it too soon to say this? It is just a bo1 (in one of the most important tournaments of the year, but still). I would not count them out, although you are right that there is this possibility.

true, true.. =)
2016-07-06 22:25
Now that we know what happened, the scenario I painted will of course not happen. What I meant was, however, that if Astralis yet again exit a grand tournament from the groups then someone in their back office will not be satisfied and a reaction should follow accordingly. Luckily, Astralis made it out of groups playing with two standins which is impressive. So in terms of the brand and the team, this tournament can actually be seen as a positive experience even though the brand exposure did not reach the intended heights. For now I believe the team and organisation is safe and sound as it is. Whether they will win tournaments, I don't know. Maybe even their internal goals have been readjusted following recent events, and if quarters/semis are acceptable then the goals are probably more aligned with the capabilities of the team as of now.
