VP beat Astralis, to Major semis

Virtus.pro defeated Astralis 2-0 to become the first semi-finalists at ESL One Cologne. (19-17 on Overpass and 19-15 on Train).

Virtus.pro and Astralis faced in the first quarter-final at ESL One Cologne in a best of-three series. With Danny "zonic" Sørensen as their stand-in Astralis started Overpass on the T-side.

The Danes picked up the pistol round after Nicolai "device" Reedtz's opening kill but couldn't stop a triple kill by Paweł "byali" Bieliński in the following round, losing the anti-eco. Janusz "Snax" Pogorzelski's 1vs2 clutch gave Virtus.pro their sixth round and they made it 9-1 before Finn "karrigan" Andersen brought a round to his team with a triple kill.

TaZ & co. become semi-finalists

After getting one more round, Astralis' struggle continued and they trailed 3-12 at halftime. The story of the second half was much different as Andreas "Xyp9x" Højsleth & company grabbed the first seven rounds of the half to come within two rounds of Virtus.pro (12-10).

Astralis even got a match point buy failed to close out as Jarosław "pashaBiceps" Jarząbkowski's quad kill took the match to overtime. The CT-sided Astralis were overwhelmed in the first half of overtime, losing all three rounds. Virtus.pro eventually stopped the scary comeback and won Overpass 19-17.

Train was the second map and Astralis won their third pistol round of the series with zonic picking up a triple kill. Virtus.pro answered in the third round with an early weapon purchase and went on a three round streak, taking the lead.

It was another rough game for zonic

Astralis responded harshly, grabbing nine of the ten remaining rounds in the half in a dominant fashion. The Danes led 11-4 at halftime.

The Danish team won yet another pistol round but lost the third round of the half as Wiktor "TaZ" Wojtas secured a triple kill and the round (13-5). Virtus.pro's comeback effort kicked off after this point and they managed to make it 14-11 but a 2vs3 victory by karrigan and device gave the Danes four match points. Virtus.pro ultimately were able to take it to overtime with a four round streak.

After giving up two kills in each three first half overtime rounds, Virtus.pro closed out all three of them and finished the match 19-15 and the series 2-0, eliminating Astralis and becoming the first semi-finalists in Cologne.

they were really poor today that's the fact. but the question is whether that was a poor day in the office or they simply can't play better. sometimes you just have to grind the result and that's what they did. if they have a stand a chance they need to play their asses of tomorrow against sk and snax needs to be on his prime. great game by device. he's definitively top 5 in the world atm.

He's saying Astralis wouldn't even have lost to Gambit in the first place. And thus would have topped their group and have to have played fnatic (cos the latter came 2nd in their group) in the quarter finals. However yes, I agree, Astralis with Kjaerbye and Dupreeh probably would have beaten VP.

You are still vastly limited in your execution, compared to the strategies that has been drilled together. Instead people can only do basic stuff and rely on their aim. Hence the entire team suffers.

Astralis are CT team. They don't have crazy T side tactics. Of course they suffered tactically but at the same time they had nothing to lose, no pressure whatsoever.
2016-07-08 13:59
except astralis never relied on 'drilled' executes, their entire 2015 success was amazing CT sides and today they proved it again... Their T side wasn't execute heavy either, simple stuff...
2016-07-08 14:04
We don't know how Kjaerbye would've played, but dupreeh would've played a lot better than zonic, which isnt even zonic's fault as he didnt know before hand that he had to play
2016-07-08 15:01

but at this stage it's coulda woulda shoulda in this match, astralis didn't give a fuck, laughing off every lost round, usually they would tilt and choke like no other team... at this point you can't say what would;ve happened...

Nah this VP won't win a map vs SK if they don't step up, they struggled so hard vs a team with stand-in. This is not the VP that could destroy teams on majors. Easy 2-0 for SK if they don't improve

The ease of playing against a weakened team with two stand-ins severely outweighs the difficulty of playing two stand-ins. I wanna see VP do well, but I don't think they would have beaten the full Astralis line-up.
2016-07-08 15:01
Eastern european whiners can say what they want, Zonic has close to no hours prior to this event. Impressive performance, worlds best manager. Valiant effort by Astralis, they and the rest of Denmark can be proud of their performance, with such a massive handicap to miss two players from a core of 5.
