Valve cracks down on skin betting

Valve have sent out a cease and desist letter to a number of in-game item gambling companies last night, which lists the likes of CSGOLounge and CSGOFast that offer betting on CS:GO pro matches.

Following a statement from Valve one week ago that usage of Steam API in running a gambling business is not allowed per Steam user agreements, a lot of speculation floated around the scene regarding which sites will be stopped from operating and whether that involves match betting websites as well.

Last night CSGOBig.com announced that they received a cease and desist letter from Valve's legal counsel.

The above letter's legitimacy was confirmed by Valve upon inquiry to HLTV.org and Richard Lewis and it contains a list of websites that have supposedly received ten days notice (or will receive it) and are requested stop to their use of the Steam accounts for commercial purposes.

Notably, doubts about what Valve referred to as gambling have been removed, as CSGOLounge, as well as CSGOFast, sites that enable betting with skins on professional matches, are on the list.

It remains to be seen how this will affect the CS:GO scene as many leagues and tournaments have relied on item betting to increase their viewership.

FINALLY ! HYPE

maybe the community will become less toxic, but with less viewers, who were looking matches only cause of their bet, their will be less sponsoring, so less money for the professional players to earn, and in the end if the prizepool fall to much it's not even gonna be interesting for pro to keep playing

How is that? I am all for gambling and all but with money people have earned. When it's children that know the value of nothing but have access to credit cards and on top of that rage when they lose skins, I don't like it.

Thats hypocritical to say. If kids dont know value of skins etc , they should be able to buy skins from STEAM and VALVE in the first place.

How can you claim it's a great move if you're not familiar with teams and betting in the first place? You should be well informed if you want your opinion to have some value.
2016-07-20 18:41

Well, I am no stranger to gambling, I play poker daily. It's not exactly pure gambling, there is skill in the game but every hand has some randomness in it so the game has that gambling part as well. I don't need to be familiar with teams in order to know that some children can ruin their lives with gambling skins and inventories for thousands of dollars. I also know it's their parents' responsibility to deny them this chance but if the parents are absent, I am more than happy to approve valve's more on gambling sites. Also, I don't see the big deal, you can still bet actual dollars on matches (if you're over 18 and can afford it, that is) and if you win, you can still buy the shitty pixels you drool upon ingame.

It wasnt betting with skins that led the scene to what it is today , it was betting in general. And therell be always betting just without skins . thats all. And right there because wont be with skins as it used to be , it wont affect anyone BUT US that are not betting because market will get flooded in not time and prices will sink in no time. Just wait and see
2016-07-20 17:23
It will die without betting and the prize-pools will drop significantly and teams will invest less and less time because the prize-money isn't worth it and cs:go will remain on this level forever or even starve out. Betting is what made cs:go and if betting dies cs:go will drop fast in viewers & players.

Are you 3? Cause it sounds like a 3 year old wrote that petition. You say gambling and betting are different, but you never go and explain why. Instead you just say that CSGO Lounge needs special treatment cause sponsorship money. If anything that goes against your first point because if your first point was true then it would apply to all CS:GO gambling sites (oops, I mean betting sites) and not just CS:GO Lounge. You also never give evidence to show that viewership would drop as a result of CS:GO Lounge shutting down or even explain WHY viewership would drop.

gambling and betting are synonyms, so if it is one it is also the other. Also online gambling on sporting events is illegal, so unless the US doesn't consider CS:GO to be a sporting event (or CS:GO is too small for them to notice, which I doubt now) it should have already been shut down long ago.

Good. Even more reason for Valve to fix its game. By your logic these are the options 1) Nobody likes tactical FPS anymore (pls don't mention overwatch) 2) COD and rainbow six are better than CS:GO now 3) CS:GO is just a shitty game Thinking it needs unrestrained roulette4kids is flawed. 1.6 survived on its own merit because it was a good game.

2016-07-20 13:24
It's quite obvious how much viewers lounge is bringing atm. In late 1.6 era WCG has had 40k$ at average, even though it was one of the biggest tournaments. So, 1.6 did not survive on its on. By my logic, there is only good option in this situation: Valve backs out on decision to ban Lounge, but all the roulettes are remain banned.
2016-07-20 13:36
11 replies
Valve never spent a penny on 1.6 this is what is meant with surviving on its own. event organizers funded it because they knew orgs would invest because of the advertising because people watched it because THEY LIKED THE GAME. --- by my logic allow sites to gambe/bet if they operate according to national laws.

Huge part of the community doesn't even play that much. That's why betting affects the viewership so much. So, it's kind of difficult prediction to make. I've never seen competitive CoD, so idk. Honestly, I don't think they'll change the way they interact with community.

betting is by far the worst kind of gambling in regards to the scene. the legal age is the same for both. people who gamble their shit on the coin flip kind of sites might not follow the scene at all since there is no connection between the two. that's contrary to the kind of trash that loses their stuff on lounge and spams everywhere about how bad team x or player y are. worse yet some of them start ddosing games.

that's about the numbers wc3 / broodwar had in those days (not counting korean bw since it was well ahead of any esport even those of today). yet sc2 had an era of being the most popular esport without any skins at all. it pulled 250k price pool tourneys even when it was in decline. a 100k first place in a solo game is equivalent to 500k first place in 5 man game earning wise.

At this point you might as well hire Rlewis maybe it would be awesome for HLTV I hope Valve makes a new agreement so that betting/gambling is in accord with national laws and that those sites are regulated the same as normal betting/gambling sites. CS:GOlounge isn't really a big problem it was the unrestrained roullete4kids cancer everywhere.

Man I hope you didn't want to live of HLTV the rest of your life. I'm sure you got a nice programming degree or whatever. This started as a hobby right? Anyway you can still do advertisement for gaming hardware and you got to consider sponsorpay option like ESL did a long time ago. As a user watch commercial voluntarily for a nice membership reward like dno private forums or creating your own subforum and be own admin of it. It's still not over for you you can petition Valve to forge a new agreement for betting or gambling sites but make it so that it is in accordance with national laws. It was immoral for you to live of kids who develop an early gambling addiction.

I'm just trying to let you guys know that if CSGO takes a turn for the worse, and we lose major revenue sources, it will not just be business as usual, it will not be new features and an ever expanding crew. I got a masters degree in computer science, I could get a 7k€/month job tomorrow, that is not what this is about.

Dont know did you try it, but since you are biggest CSGO site, and CS site at all, why you dont aproach Valve and ask them to add HLTV stickers to the game on majors even tho you dont have a team? Valve has to help you somehow, since you make the scene alive, matches are tracked via HLTV, or to ask leagues to pay you for advertising their league matches

Well, you have to try. Its kinda stupid to run this huge site, that advertise matches, leagues, events, players for free. They have to give you smaller piece of cake. There is no shame to ask something that you deserve. And HLTV stickers would be awesome thing, and you will profit from that a lot. Anyway, if you ever succeed in some of these ideas, make my name bold

The golden age? Tell me, honestly, when you surf hltv do you feel proud? I imagine that if I were in your place I'd turn a blind eye to this or that as long as the overall product is satisfying. I'd probably be proud as a programmer yet I would be completely disgusted with myself as someone who is supposed to promote the scene. Is promoting child gambling simply a "necessary evil" to maintain this site? Do you honestly and wholeheartedly believe that nonsense? Don't answer that question, it is obvious you are in no position to say "no", however do take a moment to think about it objectively. Do you honestly believe an anonymous registration system in an age of internet trolls is valid? It is typical of hltv to see numerous people go bananas using every possible curse word in their lexicon because the team they bet on lost a game. You can't even assume they are fans because it is unlikely someone can be a fan of 10 different teams. How about racism? At this point this is a more popular subject on the forums than the game itself. More often than not comments such as "monkeys" or "toilet cleaners" are acceptable and wouldn't get deleted even after reporting them (I've tested that more than once). Even when they do get deleted OP almost never gets punished. Some probably do, most of them don't. Not that it matters when it literally takes 1 minute to create a new account and switch your IP. In contrast I suggest you try finding one racist comment on teamliquid or test what happens when you do that on joindota. In #160 you mentioned new features. What about getting the "old features" or rather the bulk of the site to an acceptable level? Finally, since you are implicitly suggesting gambling sites were the only salvation for hltv, would you mind telling me how sites such as gosugamers, joindota, teamliquid do what they do without advertising said gambling sites?

60k ip bans on record disagree with you. This gambling shit has gone too far, there is no underage gambling unless their parents allow it, where I come from we learn to be responsible for our children. If they get a drop ingame and gamble it, who cares, nothing of value was lost, if they pay to buy skins, they are using a credit card or the likes, those are restricted to 18+. What will happen now is that the skin gambling ads will be replaced with gambling ads for licensed sites, and the difference will be the same, you think these kids who stole their parents CC for skins wont just do the same for some betting site, or bet with bitcoin somewhere? So much for saving the world mr. white knight. You focus on the negative, fine, do that, I focus on being the single most comprehensive collection of CS content. I focus on having a stats section that I think rival ANY other sport in usefulness and certainly in completeness and feature wise. You think everything is so easy, I wonder why Twitter and other sites haven't just solved this silly little trolling problem.

You are naive if you think that parents allow it to happen and are wrong to think it is all the parents fault. Were your parents aware of everything you were doing to the age of 18? I highly doubt it. Do you have any kids? If so, you do not know everything they will be doing up until the point of 18. At 16/17 I was able to go to school and on the way home pick up a prepaid mastercard from the shop with the money I got from working. I eventually lost it but whatever, it was my fault for doing so. That was under-aged gambling and my parents were completely unaware. Even if they were to look at my computer to see what sites I had been using (which I don't think is good, kids should have some freedom) they would not have a clue what a site like CSGOLounge was. I can see kids not understanding gambling at those younger ages and doing the same as me but using their birthday or pocket money just to lose it and then spend more trying to earn it back. Again, you are naive to think that parents should and do know everything their kids do. I understand that you want HLTV to grow and be better than it currently is but advertising gambling to kids is not the right way to go about it. I hope you find a way to support the site so it can improve. Good Luck.
2016-07-21 09:09

I think parents should be able to control whether their kid has a CC or not to be honest. And if a 16 year old buys a prepaid Mastercard, he is getting money to fill it from somewhere, the parents can keep track of these.
2016-07-21 11:29
It's Valve's responsibility to fix the game then. And if they're too stubborn to do it the game deserves to die. I already posted what I think are the three options: 1) Nobody likes tactical FPS anymore (pls don't mention overwatch) 2) COD and rainbow six are better than CS:GO now 3) CS:GO needs major improvement Please consider the sponsorpay option. And think about betting according to national laws. If you advocate it there will be sweet deals in the future which are moral.

What is the problem of live of HLTV for the rest of his life? Does not matter if it started as a hobby or not, today HLTV is the best/larger website of cs in activity and imo it is awesome that he can profit from it and turn it into his job. All this matter around betting/gambling is bullshit, valve does not care about kids gambling, they only care about their profit with the game. With external sites players are not spending their money in market nor open weapon cases. The big question here is how much money is valve losing to gambling/betting websites?

They care about being sued and lose ALL their revenue because their company being sued to death. If Valve is run by literally the greediest people alive then they didn't make enough from CS no but if Gaben has any sense of realism he knows his company is in better financial straights than the US gov lol.

Thats the point here, they only take actions when their revenue is at risk. Community is expecting fixes and improvements since early days of csgo, but instead they throw at us bugged maps and weapon sounds. They dont care about making the game better. VAC is almost so trash like 1.6 VAC used to be. MM is full of cheaters. The game is a mess.
2016-07-20 14:05
There weren't any legit sponsors interested? Like faceit, ESEA or even EGB? Was promoting a gray-zone unregulated gambling website the only way for HLTV to earn money?

Yes many, and for all we know nothing will change. But all this is uncertain, so as I was telling yolobomber, we'll have to tighten our belt, and stop hiring people, which means our coverage would suffer until we were sure of another revenue source.

Yeah, I'd find it hard to believe that the end of a single, as major as it is/was, ad deal would be the end of profit for the biggest CS news website. It's just your comment that got me wondering a bit, it sounded dramatic.
2016-07-20 14:04
Hopefully as a result of this we'll see more legit gambling sites pop up. Surely you can form an agreement with them for advertising? I know BetWay already does an eSports section (but the CSGO part is a bit lame unless it's a Major or something). Perhaps you guys could help provide stats to them, etc so they can get a better understanding of good odds, etc and also advertise them. A big company like that would be a decent source of revenue.

Sure, we hope so too, but if CSGO declines 50% because of it, it is suddenly another ballgame entirely. Also the very low barrier of entry skin betting provided made betting on matches much easier and approachable than having to register on some new site, waiting for some shady payment process to actually move your money, and not before then being able to actually place a bet.
2016-07-20 14:39

We both know, that it wont end with you working for free. You have the biggest Cs site with so many visitors every day. I doubt you cant find a new partner.. Will you now finally end the partnership with csgofast? I mean we're all here because of the competitive aspect of the game, and gambling completely ruins it, well until the big man stepped up and shut it down for good. I understand that these ads (the whole partnership per se) were a source of income, but they simultaneously reduced the content quality. I'd rather see you guys support viable content creators such as Thorin, RL, Scoots and so on, cause they give a lot of insight when it comes down to the competitive aspect. I mean when you look at the site, all these ads take up most of the site. How about we turn that empty space into something useful, like special feeds that contain theorycraft, scene reports by 3rd parties stated above and whatnot. Would be kind of a gamechanger. It's not all about the scrilla.

How naive are you? You think running a site like this is free? You think I love the ads and think they add to the visual quality of the site? Ads are necessary evil for any website. And our partnerships will end when their contracts do.

Hey I'm not saying you should remove ALL ADS, but aren't 3 or 4 ads for the same site a bit overkill (unless that was the option you took cause it paid the most). Of course it's not free, I'm just saying that you don't have to bombard people with ads, but rather make a better use of them to create more space on the site, and take advantage of that space. Not hating on your work bruv, kudos for the work, just putting my 2 cents.

+1 I think you are right Edit: It might also have something to do with how you bet on Fanobet, since you are not purely placing skins, but rather a made up value. When you deposit skins on Fanobet, you get "points" on the site marked as dollars, but really that is a fictional value that made up, which I guess makes the site alright.

are you retarded? lounge IS a gambling site .. and it clearly states in their letter than using steam API for their own commercial purpose is against steam TOS. they have every right and always have had a right to close these sites. was just a matter of time

lounge is not a GAMBLING site it is a BETTING site. The two things, although similar, fall under different categories. Anyway they need to work out a new way to get skins from inventories to their sites as the letter states that it is their BOTS in violation of TOS and not the website itself.

are you for real? gambling = betting gamble verb 2. take risky action in the hope of a desired result. "he was gambling on the success of his satellite TV channel" synonyms: take a chance, take a risk, take a leap in the dark, leave things to chance, speculate, venture. -------------------- betting noun the action of gambling money on the outcome of a race, game, or other unpredictable event. "football pools and other forms of betting" the odds offered by bookmakers on the outcome of races, games, etc. "Atlantic Way headed the betting at 2-1"

yes, but the difference is gambling is corrupt af, easy to rig without anyone knowing & complete random chance if it isnt rigged. Betting is much more difficult to corrupt & easier to expose (hence iBP) and there is a skill to predicting the outcome. Im talking about gambling in the sense of the game, not in the definition of the word. You copy pasted the definition of the word "gamble" which is an action. *GAMBLING* 1. the activity or practice of playing at a game of chance for money or other stakes. Betting is not random chance. The reason you have to be 18+ to bet is because it does have an aspect of "gambling on an outcome" but that does NOT make it casino gambling.
2016-07-20 14:05

The dictionary defines both gambling and betting as “risking a sum of money.” So really, as long as you have something at stake, you are gambling. That's all there is to it whether it's in context of the game or not. Betting is a form of gambling because you are risking something for greater reward.
2016-07-20 14:08

Betting is not the same as casino gambling. Yes it involves money but if you want to use that as a point then I guess when I buy a product on amazon I don't have yet, I risk it not turning up and therefore I'm gambling.

2016-07-20 23:43
:::D:D:D "There is a skill to predict the outcome" ::::D Just rofl at people who can't get it. Its not about predicting the outcome, its about predicting the chances for different outcomes. Predicting the outcome would be the case if you get 2.0 odds for both teams. Then it would get your rich to predict outcomes. But since the odds differ, you need to throw that predicting the outcome away and instead focus on chances of different outcomes.
2016-07-20 16:41
Match fixing is really easy to do if you are betting enough money on matches. The prize pool for an average tier 2 is around $20k. If you stand to win $50k in a bet, why wouldn't you give the team you are betting against $25k to get them to lose on purpose. Sure you are decreasing you winnings, but theoretically you are increasing the chance of you winning the bet to 100%. As for the iBP example, the only reason Valve even looked into it was because one of the iBP players told a friend that they did it and that person then went to Valve. The reason you don't hear many other examples of match fixing is that most people aren't that stupid. Even if we go by your definition that gambling is purely luck based (like roulette or slots), while betting you have some control of the outcome (for instance blackjack or poker), wagering on CS:GO matches would still go under gambling by that definition. Your bet has no affect on the actual outcome of the match, the only choice you make is which team you are betting on. The only difference between gambling on a CS:GO match and gambling on a roulette wheel is that in a CS:GO match the chances of either team winning are not known. You are simply gambling on the fact that you know the chances better than the betting sites do (or the people betting on them I guess, since they determine the odds). For instance if the NIP v VP ELeague match that is coming up of Friday (which I think most people would agree that it is close to a 50/50 match) had VP at 100:1 odds of winning the Bo3, then even if you thought NIP were likely going to win you would bet on VP because the actual chances of VP winning are well higher than the 1% chance this theoretical (and stupid) betting site is giving them. The same would work for roulette if the people running the tables didn't know the odds. If a casino had a roulette table where the odds of landing on '0' were 1000:1 (but the chances of it actually happening stayed the same at 1/37 or 1/38 (depending on the table)), any half decent gambler would always put their money on 0 because once it did happen they would make way more back than what they lost. If a CS:GO gambling site had a robot that could correctly determine the exact odds of any match (let's say this robot runs 100 mock matches and uses how many each team wins to come up with the odds), then it would be exactly like roulette. Since the chances of each outcome are equal to the odds given, the money you would get would correctly represent the actual chance of it happening. Thus in this theoretical world you would not be able to abuse the fact that the odds are wrong to make money and the only way left that would decide whether you made or lost money would be luck, as you have no way to influence the outcome (without match fixing). In short: The only difference between betting on a CS:GO match (or any sporting event) and betting on a roulette table is that the chances of any outcome at a roulette table are known while the chances of any outcome in a CS:GO match are not known.
2016-07-21 14:57

Lets talk about what will happen next. So, as soon as csgolounge will shut down betting part, semi-pro playing is dead, bcs there will be no money for league like Kinguin or Rising stars etc. Why? Bcs no one will watch match eSuba vs Vesuvius for example without posibility of betting and without semi-pro players there will be no tier 2/3 players and without tier 2/3 players there will be no pro players... So cs pro playing is probably dead in few months/years

As for betting , because i see many morons in here trolling and be happy about it , it WONT STOP so the scene WONT clean up if thats what you hoping for. There are legit betting sites out there with real money involved and VALVE cant do nothing about them , so being happy because of skins betting sites dying and noone else is pathetic imho. Youll all see the consequences later and you wont be that happy about it.

Ok, tell me that in 2-3 years when noone will play CS GO and no majors happen , you find skins in cases that cost shit which then you wont even care to open cases and the list of issues goes on and on. If you think sir these things wont affect you for the worse , think again. Cross your fingers for VALVE to not close all betting sites or epic decline of the game is coming. So , dont be so happy about it , it will affect the whole community in a bad way.

Wanna check my main account to see ? Please now , gtfo. Im playing since 1.5 theres wasnt even STEAM back then , used to WATCH PRO SCENE OF HEATON , POTTY , JOHHNY R and i took part in various competitive local tours in my country for a ticket to CPL , ESWC. What is happening with CS GO NEVER EVER HAPPENED to Counter strike. This kind of popularity , money generation and community involving. And you like it or not , a big reason for this explosion had to do with SKINS AND BET sites. Like all other sports around , BETTING , is vital to keep people interested aside the "action" aspect of sport itself. It generates money for many people that making local or international mini tours to keep the scene as energetic as ever.

CS 1.0-1.6 survived without skins, gambling and Valve's involvement into the competitive scene for 13 years. Maybe because it was actually a good game.

Not a chance, CSGO is a sideline game for them only for making profit. They have a handful of devs which are "working" on insignificant updates every couple of months but that's it.
2016-07-22 12:34

Only for profit is the keyword. If they don't profit, but still believe in the game (the competitive players will stay), maybe they will understand that they should focus on making the game more competitive instead of more casual. They have had no reason to work on a game that gives them ez money. The reason for adding cases instead of fixing the game is that fixing the game wouldn't give more money, while adding skins would. Now maybe they will think that actually making the game better will get more players/ viewers? Or they might of course continue down the same path. Simply letting the game live it's own life, and eventually die.
2016-07-22 12:42

In my opinion they will either let the game die or make a whole another game in source engine 2. Anyways CS won't be successful ever since even if a new game comes out as betting will be ruled out.
2016-07-22 12:44
2 replies
Making another game might happen, I don't see them doing it within 2-3 years though. I do dissaggree on cs never be successful. Does that mean you don't think any fps will be successful, or that you think overwatch, cod++ are better than csgo? I think if they make a cs2, they should make it free to play. This could mean alot for making it a popular game in Asia. I for one do not think csgo will die after skins, but it will decrease in numbers. If I were to decide what to do with csgo, I would probably add some better modes. Casual is way too slow to be enjoyable, and this is how a lot of people start out with csgo. Making something like domination, to hold ex. bombspots(DM), might be fun.
2016-07-22 13:25
1 reply
The only way CS will ever be successful is if they make it f2p but make it on an engine where hacks won't work ( which is practically impossible). Also I don't think Overwatch will manage to stay alive in esports, cod is trash, bf1 is too casual. I personally wait for Quake Champions and I hope it will be a breakthrough game.

"It remains to be seen how this will affect the CS:GO scene as many leagues and tournaments have relied on item betting to increase their viewership." you mean you go to see a football game just because you bet on stanleybet or weatherver? who give's a fok about 1k viewers who watch just for skins.
2016-07-20 15:46

Poor comparison. How many years does football exist? How many companies and teams does exist to promote football tournments/leagues? Are you really making a comparison between an 4 year esport with a sport with more than 100 years old? CSGO exists in a scene where another esports try to take the spotlight, competing against mobas, fps, rts. Any imbalance with audience take away CS GO from spotlight. And this means end of line.

Valve are queers. You could easily make several nice skins from almost nothing, just by having more knowledge in CS than the majority of the bettors. Although I lost 15 bucks on fnatic (ty s1mple), I still got more than 20$ out of nowhere, having started from cheap shit that was dropped from the servers. Unfortunately I've not managed to get a cool M4 skin, and ty Vulva now I can't do it ever. Can they ban real money bets? No they can't. So those words about saving pros from stupid community are even more stupid. Those who are responsible for banning CSGL need to be raped to death with big black cocks. .!. GaybeN

You are fucking retarded apeshit. They ban skin betting sites because they are unregulated,no age verification etc. Real money betting they are verifying age and you have to be 18+ to verify, otherwise you cant bet. "Those who are responsible for banning CSGL need to be raped to death with big black cocks. .!. GaybeN" You are just mentaly disabled and my advice to you is withdraw the 20$ from steam and go visit physician. If its not too late,it might be the best deal of your whole life.

As we al knowlegde austrian has a great dept, and bill gates of valve is austria so lot of link there? Valvo knew about gambling but only banned this week, why not earlier. becaus valve may own all the betting sites (exacpt csgolotto tmartn xD) and now they ban bots so peoples canno't get they're skins anymore. Are you mentally challenged? Yes the sites are being shut down, but these guys still made billions so far (e.g. millions per group of people owning site(s)) The question isn't whether or not they can continue their operations. The question is whether or not they'll be penalized (in any form) for their fraudulent behavior, which means legal action. Now that VALVe has shut down gambling, they might just ignore everything else as they used to, and if the now previous skin betting site owners just keeps a low profile, it'd all blow over and they'd be millions of dollars richer individually, based off fraud and stealing/marketing to children.

Wtf , im 1.5 player , even before STEAM was ON ! I was following the PRO scene since the era of oldschool Nip , SK and events like CPL etc .. So , explain me ! How more exposure , more money generation , more interest , more tours , more teams , more people watching events , more people playing the game because of skins / betting .. hurts CS GO by any means !!? Because i cant understand !!! Clearly i cant.
2016-07-21 11:07

I think this will probably just clean up the space and make room for more professionals entities who will do everything to comply with valve and gambling laws.

Not even a joke. There are services which solve captchas for spammers. Also chinese/indian workers. BUT, you will have to operate from a jurisdiction where valve can't do much.

Cool, wish the obama administration could do the same to fanduel, draft kings, uber, lyft and like a thousand other sites that operate what was formally an illegal business online. O but at least were standing up against internet bullying..FFS weak country I live in.

I wouldn't be surprised if businesses like Uber and Lyft are tied to some relative of a guy in the congress. Those fuckers know how to legitimize stealing from a beggar.
2016-07-21 05:10
u dumb kids surprised or something? they already announced this 2 weeks ago.
2016-07-21 03:02
HLTV isn't quite #TeamEarly these days.
2016-07-21 05:09
It remains to be seen how this will affect the hltv.org as sites have relied on item betting to increase their viewership.
2016-07-21 05:46
Maybe soon the hltv match threads won't be filled with raging underaged betting faggots.

finally! valve still has it sometimes it seems, n1.
2016-07-21 11:52
inb4 the companies who host their services elsewhere than in the US dont care. oh well I guess valve can just permaban their accounts / lock skins so that should take care of the problem if someone won't shut down their services otherwise
2016-07-21 12:11
Awesome news thank you valve!

RIP ez skins
2016-07-21 14:45
I've never done any betting, but from what it says it seems like they are only removing the sites' steam accounts and not actually the site itself, so how would that force the sites to shut down?
2016-07-21 15:16

the sites all work using the steam API which is how users can use the site with their steam accounts, meaning that if they aren't allowed to use the steam API anymore then they have to shut down as they have no business that way, at least not until they find a way around it.

Correct me if I am wrong but wouldn't it be better to get rid of opskins and all the sites that make it possible to sell the skins for irl money. This way you can keep the gambling sites because it's not real money, so no gambling. I think everybody wins from this except valve but I think they can do something else to make money.
2016-07-21 17:52
