PENTA handed StarSeries ban

PENTA Sports have been banned from SL i-League StarSeries after forfeiting their match against Team Kinguin on Wednesday.

PENTA were due to face Kinguin in their final group match in the European Season 2 qualifier but decided against playing it as they would not be able to advance to the playoffs, regardless of the outcome.

This is a violation of StarLadder's rules, which state that teams will face severe penalties in case they refuse to play all of their matches.

Contacted by HLTV.org, a StarLadder official stated that PENTA will not be invited "for sure for next season" of StarSeries, but the exact length of the ban, which will be extended to any other team with players from the lineup, has not yet been determined.

Kevin "⁠kRYSTAL⁠" Amend's team can still secure a spot in the following season of StarSeries, but they will have to qualify from the Amateur division.

The news comes as a serious blow to PENTA, who completed their lineup just two weeks ago with the addition of Spanish veteran David "⁠Kairi⁠" de Miguel following the departure of Johannes "⁠tabseN⁠" Wodarz to NRG.

This should read "PENTA are banned because of the loss of viewers from this online portion of a tournament which they should have not been participating in." The fact they were seeded to play this match with no potential to reach the next stage against a team guaranteed that next stage is just stupid. Theyre pissed because they lost viewer money. So banning them for the next season, fair enough. But "The team from Germany had refused to play the third match of a group stage of the online-qualifier and in that regard they will never be allowed to participate in any of the StarSeries’ divisions." True, if they requested to not play the match and were told what was going to happen that would be one thing. Which seems very unlikely btw. If this were on LAN, that would be another. But an online "qualifier" which no matter what the outcome, would not allow them to continue regardless, makes no sense.

They were informed that they SHOULD play until the end. Tournament rules requires play until the end of tournament. First of all, they are playing for sponsors and fans, not for us.

We have 10 teams that play each other regularly right now that can actually hold up some competition to tier 1 and the same maps for 15 years that have a Source face lift with a couple of extras. What for you need to invite NEW teams, if they act like that? Everyone should play all games until end, that's the rule. Same for all sports. Even if you doesn't have chance to proceed to other stages or even to other place in tournament table, you're playing for peoples who is standing behind tournaments and organizations, for fans and sponsors. We just wouldn't invite them to our starseries next season, but they are free to take part in any open quals.

What are you saying? Rules don't apply because... reasons? I've played in loads of tournaments and leagues and I know most of the rules on this site. It was a really common thing to read the rules of a tournament before playing. Because even though most of the rules were shared between them, some weren't and those were the ones you took notice off. I've been disqualified from 2 tournaments for crouch-walking (Russian walk) in 1.6. I'm totally fine with that now, although I was probably livid with that decision back then. How I felt back then should never play a part in decisions like that. Like I said, claiming ignorance is not a defense. You can't say "whoops, I didn't know it was against the rules to murder someone," and expect to walk or for someone to show you leniency because of it. You are putting the blame on StarSeries, when it should be on Penta themselves. Penta got themselves banned. Penta broke rules they should have known about. Penta hurt the scene. Not StarSeries. StarSeries did everything right. StarSeries wrote the rule book and acted by it. Nothing more, nothing less.

I don't understand WHY, even if they can't proceed to the playoffs, Penta is no where near a tier 1 team in my opinion, right? And they just got their line up together like 2 weeks ago, so it's not like they don't need practice. This would be a perfect oppertunity for them to just practice, maybe try some new strats, dry run a strat to see how it works and doesn't work. There's no need to forfeit the match and that just shows they don't have the work ethic needed to become a tier 1 team.

Want to clarify, ban is not permanent, we just will ignore organization and players who were in this team for next season. That's not Full time ban, they still can take part in any qualifications to StarSeries and prove that they can compete with other top teams and prove that they are PROFESSIONALS, who take care about fans, sponsors and organization. And yeah, from StarLadder's side, we have only one question to Penta as org, why they allowed players to act like that. We did respect all penta's staff for being professional.
