ESL announce New York format
ESL have announced the format and schedule for the $250,000 ESL One New York tournament, taking place in Barclays Center from September 30-October 2.
ESL One New York will bring back the Swiss format which we saw in use for the first time in CS:GO during the ESL One Cologne Main Qualifier back in June.
The system remains mostly the same, though this time we'll only see eight teams in play, which means 16-17 matches will be played in the group stage in total.
ESL brings back the Swiss format for New York
To quickly explain the Swiss system: in this case it features five best-of-one rounds, with only the first round match-ups being pre-determined.
Every round's match-ups afterwards will be chosen randomly between teams within the same pool (based on win-loss score) that have not played each other yet, until the participants reach three wins to qualify for semi-finals or three losses to get eliminated from the tournament.
The only exception to the rule above will happen in round four, when one team with a 1-2 score will have to meet a team from a pool above (2-1) due to an odd number of teams in the two pools.
