WESG qualifiers announced

Starladder and ImbaTV have announced that they will host the qualifers for the $1.5 million World Electronic Sports Games (WESG).

Over the next months, qualifiers will be held in four different regions and also in China to determine the 24 teams that will attend WESG, an esports event that will be hosted by Chinese e-commerce tycoon Alibaba later this year at an as-yet unannounced location. A total of $3.7 million will be paid out across four tournaments, with $1.5 million being allocated to the Counter-Strike competition alone.

As we get closer to the start of the qualifying process, more details are emerging about the tournaments' rules. It has now been revealed that team rosters are limited to one country, effectively ruling international lineups out of the competition.

Twenty-four teams will compete at WESG

According to Stepan Shulga, Executive Producer at Starladder, this rule "could help esports to be recognized as official sports and potentially included in the Olympic Games."

The first qualifier announced is for teams from Africa and Middle East only. It will begin with an online stage, on August 13-14, and will culminate with an offline event at the Conrad Hotel in Dubai, from August 26-28, with the top three teams advancing to the WESG global finals.

In addition to the spots at the main event, teams will also fight for approximately $75,000 at the qualifier, with the prize breakdown looking as follows:

1. ~ $30,000
2. $18,000
3. $9,000
4. $6,000
5-8. $3,000

Teams can find more information about this regional qualifier and the registration process by heading over to the official WESG qualifier website.

Below you can find the allocation of WESG slots per region:

Region Slots
China (Host) 1
Asia-Pacific 6
Europe & CIS 8
North & South America 6
Africa & Middle East 3

The $1.5 million will be distributed between the top eight finishers as follows:

1. $800,000
2. $400,000
3. $200,000
4. $60,000
5-8. $10,000

`this rule "could help esports to be recognized as official sports and potentially included in the Olympic Games."` Esports are not sports, just like chess, pool, poker, and many other similar activities that are not physically exerting and don't belong to the Olympics. Esports are great as they are.

So? They don't feature lacrosse, baseball or 200m hurdles any more. Are those somehow not sports anymore? Or are they simply not worthy of inclusion into the olympics because of some stupid ass values YOU hold? Those things are still sports though, thats why they were there in the first place. I don't like the fact that esports are being pushed by many people to be considered as "sports" as a reason to legitimize them in the mainstream and in the views of people who have no idea about esports. Well, guess what, they don't need that, they are already legit. Just like many other things like motor sports, extreme sports/games, fighting games (UFC), etc.

olympic.org/news/ioc-approves-five-new-s.. The point is they add and remove events nearly every single Olympics. Not because of some silly "it's-a-sport"-criteria, but because of popularity and timeliness. I don't agree with you at all that it's not a sport, because I don't think it's an exclusive and secluded group of things that are allowed to be called sports. I would rather think about it the other way around. But that is not the point.

100% agree. But I don't see any way to attend at Olympics as long as the Esports industry (referring mainly to CS:GO) will go further with this mess of tournaments we are running in. This is way to much and I'm quite happy that ESL/ESEA, FaceIT and somehow also ELeague are coordinating it pretty well. We do have each year from 2016 on: 3x Major Tournaments 2x ESL Pro League 2x Esports Championship Series 2x ELeague 2x DreamHack 1x WESG / World Electronic Sports Games 2x SL i-League ...obviously more to come 14 big tournaments and a year has 12 months...as we all should know at least. I love watching Esports but it's getting to much imo. I do understand that it is free to choose which tournaments organizations want to attend but you have to consider that every org needs public appearance and money. Let's hope that the industry will not collapse like a financial bubble.

There are way more than 2 Dreamhack tournaments this year, there was Liepzig, Malmo, Austin, Summer, and there will be Dreamhack Bucharest, Winter along with presumably the final major Cluj-Napoca as well. So that would be 7 Dreamhack Tournaments. There will also be 5 ESL/IEM tournaments by year's end (Barcelona, Katowice, Cologne (major), New York, and Oakland), 3 Starladder, an MLG major, an ESWC, a CEVO, Counter Pit, the Global eSports Cup, and 2 Northern Arena tournaments, giving us 22 tournaments in total (either completed or announced for this year). Even with this there is still a 2 month gap of no tournaments from Cologne (early July) all the way to Starladder S2 (early September). Personally I find the main problem to be the leagues. Tournaments like Dreamhack only take 1 week to complete while most leagues take a good 3 to 4 months. They also usually end up having way more maps played. The ESL Pro League for instance had 264 (132 in EU, 132 in NA) maps over the course of the regular seasons as well as 26 maps played (out of a potential 29 maps) in the Finals for a total of 290 maps played. The Cologne Major only had 42 maps played (out of a potential 49) and the Major Qualifier only had 33 maps played. In fact, the 4 minors combined only had 117 maps played (NA: 28/32, EU: 29/32, Asia: 30/36, CIS: 30/36). So the major, the qualifier, and all 4 minors only add up to 192 maps played. Nearly 100 maps less than the ESL Pro League. Also the amount of tournaments has actually gone down from 25 tournaments and 10 leagues (3 ESLs, an ESEA, 2 Starladders, 2 CEVOs, a PGL, and a Fragbite) to 22 tournaments and 3 leagues (assuming there aren't any others announced). So I think that the number of tournaments is perfectly fine. In short, the schedule has actually decreased from last year and if there is any problem with there being too much CS then it is caused by the leagues being stupidly long, not by there being too many tournaments.
2016-08-05 17:36
1 reply
Oh yeah you a right, I completely forgot ESL One (but ESL One is often a Major as well or at least once a year out of 3 that being held) and ofc other tournaments like CEVO and stuff. Man this is insane... However, I still think that less tournaments and longer seasons which turn out in league systems like the Pro League or E-League would be better for the industry. And as it seems we are heading right in to that direction since the amount of tournaments went down as you mentioned.

I don´t think we will see CS at the olympics. But you are wrong about chess, it´s actually accepted as a sport in different countries and by the IOC. Similar with Dart and snooker. Even some e-sports are considered national sports in asian countries such as South Korea with starcraft etc.

eSport is a sport, but having eSport in the Olympics is just wrong on so many levels.

Speaking of useful sources, maybe you should actually do fucking research instead of looking at the first thing google throws at you and taking it as complete truth, dumbass. Many organizations including the IOC (which recognizes Chess as a sport) state that a sport does not have to involve physical activity. Here is an example of the criteria of a sport from 1 governing body. "The sport proposed should have an element of competition. The sport proposed should in no way be harmful to any living creatures. The sport should not rely on equipment that is provided by a single supplier. The sport should not rely on any “luck” element specifically designed into the sport." If you want to learn more, then read the wikipedia article on sports. If your argument is that wikipedia is something that can easily be edited and faked, then by all means go to the sources and read them. They back up the wikipedia article completely. I would also like to point out that dictionaries are often pretty stupid. For example the Oxford dictionary says that one of the definitions of literally is figuritively. Here is the exact quote: Literally: "Used for emphasis or to express strong feeling while not being literally true: 'I have received literally thousands of letters' " And you trust these same people to tell you what a sport is?

Most international games don't allow mixed team, think soccer wc etc. You should be grateful that a Chinese company provides funds for 8 European teams to compete and win. What a fuckin dumbass. If i was alibaba boss i will reduce European spots to 3 and make china spots 4.
2016-08-05 19:40

This isn't an international game if it allows more than one team from a specific country. I shouldn't be greatful since in my opinion I would rather have no tournament rather than a tournament without half of the best teams. If they reduced the Europian spots even more then they would get much less viewership..
2016-08-05 20:53
If you want to put it that way, then fine, host a Chinese-only event and enjoy 10 k viewers, you dummie.

Fuck I hate these companies not understanding esports and trying to force change it into their fitting definition of sports. RiP a great tournament, now we will see for example Mouz with keev and Tabsen play, who will stand in for NiKo and ChrisJ. Or maybe some fast given passports to NiKo and ChrisJ.

So it's bigger and better than any Valve-supported major. But some weird persons still think a major isn't just the biggest tournament in terms of the prizepool, but exactly sponsored by Valve. FU, this one is a major too. And no, you can call "big tournaments" everything that pays less than Valve, e.g. ELEAGUE or ESC, but this one is a major.

Imagine Facebook creates a Huge Tennis Tournament with 100Million Prize Money > wont be more important then Wimbledon Same applies here Majors are more important even with less price money Its about recognition not money
2016-08-05 16:07
4 replies
They decide if a tournament is more important or not based on these s1mple criteria: 1) Prizepool. Obviously you do want to win more money. 2) Enemies. Obviously it's more interesting to play against strong opponents. That's it. And they barely care about who is sponsoring it and so on. Speaking about Wimbledon you can't get rid of the fact that it's one of the oldest tournaments so it adds a bit more prestige to all the other stuff. Speaking about CS:GO you can't find any analogy, because CS:GO has been existing for only 4 years, so comparing Valve's majors to Wimbledon is weird.

I just try to that in Competition its not only about Prize money Every CS Team would attend a 1 Million$ Major Above a 5 Million$ Tournament
2016-08-05 17:15

Ofc it's not all about money, that's why I also mentioned the level of their enemies. It means it's more interesting to win 1 million playing against G2 or SK than against HellRaisers or Gambit. Everything else doesn't matter.

I really like SK but, suck your flags, even here we cant be without a politics. I like to see teams and players with good aim, not national cs. If you have good 5 players from one country - nice, have it, have your national KappaPride. But cs is not about nations, it is about game. Keeping this region locked rule for rosters and say this kind of excuse "could help esports to be recognized as official sports and potentially included in the Olympic Games." is beyond retarded. We will even have a f**kin refugee team competing in this year Olympics with Athletes from various countries, which also is completely ridiculous if you follow the concept of the Games. So they should find a better excuse than this for their roster rules.
