OpTic win ELEAGUE Season 2

OpTic have completed another upset to triumph at ELEAGUE Season 2 following a 2-1 win over Astralis (Train 9-16, Cobblestone 16-6, Overpass 16-11).

On their own pick, Train, Astralis began wreaking havoc from the get-go, picking up the pistol round and the first gunround as Terrorists on their way to a 5-0 lead. The domination continued despite a few close rounds, as the Danes went on to go up 9-0 before OpTic responded.

Peter "stanislaw" Jarguz's clutch double and Keith "NAF" Markovic's quad-kill on ivy gave them two rounds in a row, before a close retake on the B bombsite went the other way. In the end, Astralis switched over at a decisive 11-4 and topped it off with another pistol round victory for 13-4.

A low buy worked out for OpTic, who got four rounds in a row on the back of it, but they were too far behind on the less favored side and Astralis closed it out at 16-9, with a low buy of their own.

Astralis took Train on the back of a fantastic Terrorist side

The second map was Cobblestone, where it was OpTic who got a great start that time around, getting seven rounds in a row. Nicolai "device" Reedtz then stepped up to the plate with a 1v3 clutch, but a powerful takeover on the B bombsite crushed their economy, as the North American team picked up where they left off and got to 11-1.

Astralis's defence on B finally started working, which earned them the last three rounds, but Tarik "tarik" Celik's triple in the second pistol meant they'd have little chance to come back.

OpTic got to map point without too much trouble and the first two gunrounds went the Danes' way, but stanislaw's team secured the map on the back of two opening kills from tarik for 16-6.

OpTic secured another upset to get their first big international trophy

The decider, Overpass, started with the teams trading rounds until it was 2-1 for OpTic, who stabilized the situation and won the next two half-buy rounds. Winning a 2v2 situation on the B bombsite, they forced Astralis on an eco and another successful attack ended with the Danes saving two weapons.

Peter "dupreeh" Rasmussen's quad-kill with one of the saved guns gave his team the next round, but that was traded once again by their opponents. Astralis opted for a forcebuy and finally strung more rounds together, as Null element and Markus "Kjaerbye" Kjærbye combined for five kills. Andreas "Xyp9x" Højsleth then won a fabulous 1v3 clutch thanks to great play in a smoke in a retake on A, and dupreeh clutched a 1v1 on the same bombsite to climb back to seven rounds as CT.

With NAF's quad-kill in the pistol and stanislaw's double opening in the first gunround, OpTic pushed the score to 12-7. device then turned up after a poor showing up to that point, winning a very quick 1v4 at the B bombsite. Astralis's economy got reset right after and they decided to forcebuy anyway, but to no avail, as OpTic got to match point at 15-8.

Another poor buy towards the B bombsite worked out, however, as the Northern Arena champions saved two weapons, and Xyp9x's quad lowered the deficit to 15-11. The climb back ended there though, as OpTic secured the map and the series to clinch the trophy and $400,000 in prizemoney.

GGWP by OpTic! First destroying VP, then Faze, now grand final champions over Astralis (good they overcome their curse of choking before finals). And NAF clearly the MVP, crazy aim, insane skill. Also, really good that the pro scene is so competitive now, every tournament is unpredictable and enjoyable to watch.

true. I hate people talking about undeserved victories. If a team would have been better, they wouldn't have lost.

Shame this was an example of a game that was 100% undeserved. Astralis cleared the way by destroying all the best teams in the other bracket before choking or just getting nervous in the final. If the final was OpTic vs SK or OpTic vs NiP they would've stood a chance, since the only reason they won is clearly the fact that Astralis has trouble playing at their best under pressure.
2016-12-04 11:21
optic outperformed faze clan (a team that is considered to be one of the main contenders to win the tourney) which is huge

Sure they had an easier path to the finals than Astralis. That may take away some value from the win but it doesn't mean that the win is undeserved. If you think that its undeserved, you're delusional.

You can't say a match was won undeservedly for OpTic not having played the teams Astralis played beforehand. Sure, OpTic had a lower level of matchups, but they still won everything. You should blame stuff like that on the tournament format, not on one game.
2016-12-04 20:39
the only unfair victory was LDLC vs VP at cologne.

If you're talking about hacks, that's fair. But for games that were not influenced by such a thing or something like ping disadvantage or stuff, there's no undeservedness.

How is this interesting to watch. Ok, maybe aim wise the skill increased but, the awareness, gamesens, tactics suffer badly. Everyone pushing when in advantageus situation, frag hunting etc. Going into bombsites dry (only some teams), 2-3 players watching the same spot. Its fucked up for me at least.
2016-12-04 01:36
That is exactly why I don't what NA teams & tournaments. NA can't compete with EU on an overall level because they build a huge ego, thinking they are star potential and best on the continent because they top frag and make insane plays in pugs. When I first started following the pro scene I used to think shroud was insane and one of the best in the world because of that when I was oblivious... When really... Hes pretty shit on the competitive scale.

Optic never beat VP
2016-12-04 07:06
I know right! Finally an American team other than C9 looking a bit more promising. If Liquid can pull its weight well at the major, we'll have 3. NiP is back in form. SK's Fox change may/may not work. VP might pull a rabbit out the hat. FaZe is miles better already, I mean what sorcery is going on! I think we're in for one of the most competitive majors in near future.
2016-12-04 08:27

Gratz to OpTic splendid work they did and Astralis yet again couldn't win another tournament. NAF-FLY was on fire, what a performance we saw from him, he is clearly MVP of this finals. This is second tournamet OpTic winning in last 3 weeks and yet they again upset another favourite, looks like NA scene improved so much after results we see in 2016.

A bit of a close game, but in the end the boys at Optic Gaming clenched out this game and took home a clean victory. Impressive work from NAF-FLY and Mixwell in the final map. Overall I would have to give the MVP of the tournament to rush as he has proved himself as a solid player and put up outstanding numbers throughout the entire series. Good work boys.

Optic was the better team all around, beautiful executes, calculated risks instead of yolo plays. They still have edges to sharpen up, but they have been gradually becoming a very solid team. 2 offnotes: 0-8 predictions for Thorin, a true mastermind of bet swaying 4head Scrub crowd screaming USA when the team is composed by 2 canadians, 1 spaniard and both Americans say that they are turk(tarik) and polish(rush). :D E: Thanks for the spoilers hltv, the game wasn't even over on stream

That's what the US is, if you analyze every players last name then *technically* no one is from the US.
2016-12-04 15:03
But there was 9 matches in the play-offs, couldn't have been 0-8. Also, I personally consider that the only match that went according to paper probabilities was the dignitas-SK match. All the rest were either small surprises, big surprises, or clear upsets.

It's 0-7, my bad. 4 quarters, 2 semis and the final. The only surprise for me in this tournament was Astralis tbh, both of their wins (NIP and sk). SK was favorite to win against dignitas and it happened. mouz is a joke @lan and they lost accordingly. vp doesn't know how to play faze and they lost accordingly. At least these 3 would have this outcome 9/10 times, he just wanted to be edgy and swim against the flow instead of actually analyse things.
2016-12-04 02:17
Yeah MY bad, 7 matches, confused with the end of groups. God I wish they would reintroduce the brackets tab in the event section. "The only surprise for me in this tournament was Astralis tbh, both of their wins (NIP and sk)." Yeah, that makes already two very understandable bad predictions. "SK was favorite to win against dignitas and it happened." Yup, this one I would have favored SK as well, don't know why Thoorin went with dignitas this time but well. "mouz is a joke @lan and they lost accordingly." I wouldn't consider them a "joke", they're clearly better online, but on paper they were on the same level as optic to me, and their players had more International experience so I favored them. But that was just a small surprise, to me it was like 55-45. "vp doesn't know how to play faze and they lost accordingly." Well after reading this I went back on all VP matches against FaZe (didn't go back when they were G2/Kinguin), and to my surprise, indeed, they have only won 1 Bo1 so far against them. Didn't think it was that one-sided in this match-up. With that said, FaZe's line-up changed several times so it's kind of skewed. Plus over-all I still consider VP stronger than FaZe on paper, but fair enough, it's not as surprising as I thought. So to me he should have had at least 2, dignitas-SK for sure, and one of the two, either VP or mouz. But honestly, if I would pay an analyst to make predictions on such a tournament and he had 0-7, on such a tournament, I wouldn't blame him too much. Predicting is about big numbers, you can't always be right, even when you always pick the better team on paper, but when you get surprises everywhere and you took a few risks with other predictions, 7 matches are not enough to control the damage. Anyway, I'm gonna stop defending Thorin now, he deserves to get rekt sometimes too. Now maybe we're gonna hear about "going full thorin" on stream?

Don't get me wrong, I like thorin's style and I hope he keeps getting invited to every single tournament possible, because without him those desk talks are really boring. But what triggers me about his predictions is not the fact that he gets them wrong, that is bound to happen because cs is really random atm. I just dislike the way he does them atm. He used to provide insight on match history, strenghts and weakness in the maps picked, etc etc. Now he just says "Team X will win" and that's it, no arguments, no analysis really. But I'll give him one thing in is favor, he picks a team and he sticks by it, unlike Moses that swaps his prediction after every map xD
2016-12-04 02:48
I don't know, maybe he lost confidence? I mean Thoorin has never been the guy who was really able to assess the strength of a team in terms of in-game details. He was always more about analyzing past results and trends for that. But the other analysts who are ex-players can do that as well AND know more about the game and the teams themselves than he does. The time where he was considered a wealth of knowledge is kind of gone and he seems to just be here for banter nowadays. It's a shame because the thing I really like about him is that he often has a very good memory of CS History and can often bring up anecdotes, fun facts or context about a match-up or a team. I think he should be kept on events but not really as an in-depth analyst. He's more like a historian who you could refer to when you have doubts about some details that happened and who will provide interesting details about anything surrounding the teams and the match-up. A bit like in Tennis when sometimes you have a duo commenting a match, one is an ex-player who can easily analyze what's going on in-game, and the other one is a guy who's passionate about Tennis as a sport and knows almost by heart all scores from all matches ever played as well as current streaks and records (with or without the help of a computer I don't care). I know, it's casting it's not exactly the same, but I wish for something similar for Thoorin. I don't really expect him to predict something personally. And honestly, I don't know him personally, but he seems kind of lazy at the moment, like he doesn't really care about his job. He always had good memory but he could work even harder to bring up even more interesting things if he wanted to, I feel like. But that's my personal impression.

device yet again playing well when needed most yet his team all chokes in the most crucial moment of the tournament. wp OpTic. on the other hand I didn't even expect Astralis to make it through NiP so for them to make it to the grand finals of ELEAGUE is incredible considering that they've only played with gla1ve for a short time now.

His plays were the only reason why Astralis were even competitive at one point of that second half. The 1v4 clutch and the 2 tec-9 entries were what won 2 rounds that turned into 4, and the only 4 they got in that half. I love how people like you will slate device because there's a common misconception that every time he chokes in the knockout stage of a tourney which rarely even happens anymore compared to dupreeh who is a massive choker for example, but not mention gla1ve who had a fucking terrible last map or Xyp9x who completely shit the bed on cobble. On both maps device was being impactful with his plays or putting up far higher numbers than the rest of his team, don't forget train where he was amazing as well

Oh no, he played 'badly', the only T rounds they got were won solely by him. 1v4 in 1 round, double entry with tec9 in another that led to Optic's double eco. So he played excellent on 2 maps and slightly worse on the last one and retarded people like you will still call 'choke'. Let's not blame anything on xyp9x and glaive combining to 10 kills on cobble, while device had 20+.

Half of the round Optic won on cobble weren't even rushes. They were coordinated pushes with limited time left.

Actually no, Devilwalk asked if he could join the team himself and Winterfox said yes, and replaced naf-fly with devilwalk. (I interviewed anger on this at ESWC 2015)
2016-12-04 07:50
I see. I stand corrected. That is a pretty bad move. IIRC, that LG roster was pretty damn good online. Of course, didn't so well at LAN like the rest of NA at the time. I'd read somewhere that NAF wanted to move to eLevate, because daps always had an interest with working with him. daps was always talking about how NAF could be one of the best if he got his mentality correct.

that's not the game, its the players lmao. If a team cant stay consistent then the winners will obviously change.

GG I CANT BELIEVE I MISSED THIS BUT NICE JOB USA!
2016-12-04 05:22
Those players choked back when they where still playing for dignitas now they choke playing for astralis. The choke is strong in them, search your feelings you know it to be true.
2016-12-04 05:28
Haha told ya Asstralis could easily lose that one, and they did it. OpTic T1 team (Kappa). SK did a right move by kicking fnx, because even f--king NiP and Astralis could defeat them which was shameful as F. Sadly nowadays defeating SK means nothing. VP, how could you lose to FaZe? The whole tournament was a joke... On paper ofc it's cool that T2 teams are winning tournaments, but in fact it suxx, because several hundreds of thousands dollars went to the wrong guys.

I can't wait for the Major to start because you can say what you want teams like SK, VP, NiP, G2 and NaVi hide most tactics, they want to win the Major so bad because it's the biggest title like in club football with Champions League.
