GuardiaN: "We're friends again"

Ladislav "GuardiaN" Kovács gave us an interview following Natus Vincere surviving the tough Group B. The Slovak sniper talked about various topics, including their matches at Katowice and fixing the trust issues they had at DreamHack Masters Las Vegas.

After a full day of play in Katowice, Natus Vincere secured their spot in the playoffs from third place in Group B, winning three out of five matches.

"We are friends again, we're not enemies," says GuardiaN

We sat down with Ladislav "GuardiaN" Kovács after their last match to find out whether Natus Vincere have solved their issues from DreamHack Masters Las Vegas and what he thought of their performance so far at IEM Katowice:

We should first go back to DreamHack Masters and how you performed there, what did you learn from your losses there?

I think we didn't take anything away from DreamHack Masters, we didn't practice - I mean, we had two maps and it didn't end well - so we just came here like a mix I would say. We played like on basic trust between each other and just on skill, so that's how we played.

Running through the group, the losses to North on Cobblestone and Heroic on Overpass, what went wrong in those matches?

In the first match against North, we had two hours free and I had to go back to the hotel to take a shower because I had a high temperature and I couldn't play the second map, it was pretty hard. We had a two hour break, and always after like two hours you're like sleepy, you're not ready to play, and suddenly we had to play because the matches were fast. So it was unexpected, I mean they played well but we weren't in the game as in the first two games.

Against Heroic, I think they sold us pretty good fakes, we had a chaotic CT side because they were faking well, they were always throwing some grenades and we didn't know where they were going. And the T side for us, we could come back but we made one mistake that cost us the whole money situation. I think we did an execution to A and they were already waiting for us in 4-5 because we didn't do anything on B, so it was a complete read from them. Heroic just played better CS.

Especially beating VP and SK, who were initially expected to go through to playoffs, what do you make of your overall performance in the group going into the quarter-final against Astralis?

I'm happy that we did it. It will be hard tomorrow, because we have to face Astralis, but I would say it was basic CS for us, we just trusted each other. We had a huge talk between the events, we had some problems and I feel like we have some trust between each other again, we are again friends, we're not like enemies. Sometimes that's more than practicing for one month and bootcamping, sometimes trust is more than anything in the game. That's why we did well, of course we made mistakes. Tomorrow if we make more mistakes, then Astralis will crush us. It will be hard, but I hope we will do well.

2017-03-02 21:59
when NaVi kicked Zeus for s1mple I said they shoulda kicked flamie (as he was meant to do what s1mple does) and everyone laughed. Now look at where NaVi are... They need to get an IGL again, but s1mple & blad3 don't get on and why would Zeus leave Gambit? Only option is hooch...

Navi are in the playoffs, Zeus should have been kicked, relies only on someone's firepower (Guardian in Navi and hobbit in Gambit), waits till it's 20 seconds on the clock, lets go. This is bs. They've kicked Zeus, bc he was underperforming and he wasn't full IGL. Starix has been. Volvo ruined Navi with the coaches rule.
2017-03-02 22:14
??? Zeus has topfragged a reasonable amount for an IGL while on Gambit, and Gambit are a successful team with him leading now so how is his IGL style shit & how does he rely on other peoples firepower more than any other IGL or player? hltv.org/?pageid=246&playerid=484 Let me guess, karrigan, steel from IMT, gla1ve and every other IGL are also shit players because they're stats aren't high, completely ignoring the team aspect of CS?
2017-03-02 22:19
what the fuck i read? flamie always get important frags and never disappear like s1mple in important match
2017-03-02 22:43
s1mple > flamie easily man wtf you on about? problem with both on the same team everyone needs to support them, and thats just not how the other NaVi players are used to playing, and they have no experienced leadership in-game.
2017-03-02 22:49
hltv.org/?pageid=246&statsfilter=2830&pl.. hltv.org/?pageid=246&statsfilter=2830&pl.. yes maybe s1mple is better but flamie always play good in important match and look how he carry navi right now
2017-03-02 22:55
they play the same role, its almost impossible for both of them to perform well in the same match. Thats exactly the point Im getting at, C9 had the same issue with shroud & stewie before autimatic came along as a strong support player.
2017-03-02 22:59
doesn't matter if they play the same role. flamie more important for navi than s1mple
2017-03-02 23:00
yeye and thats why s1mple carried liquid to a major grand final, cause he's a worse player than flamie... Also saying "Doesn't matter if they play the same role" is retarded, ofc it matters cause it means its highly likely one or the other will always be dead weight in a match, cause the playstyle is also similar. Its like saying olof, shox, snax, coldzera and s1mple would effectively be the ultimate team.
2017-03-02 23:05
s1mple didnt carry liquid. yes he played very good and disappeared in final. but ofc you s1mple fanboy and think he deserve "better team than navi". only IGL is important for the team
2017-03-02 23:07
s1mple fanboy? lmao you really know me, and I like the part where you quoted "deserve better team than navi" cause I never said that xD I agree, an IGL would allow them to likely both work in a team. as I said in #57 "and they have no experienced leadership in-game." I was originally making a point that if s1mple had replaced flamie instead of Zeus, then NaVi would likely be a much better team rn.
2017-03-02 23:10
again? flamie more important for navi than s1mple why you still didnt understand this? tomorrow just watch the match and see how much he is important. if navi need to kick someone maybe seized or guardian.
2017-03-02 23:14
seized is a great support player, the fact he has to IGL has hurt his play a lot. GuardiaN is less easy to argue for cause he hasn't really played well since his injury, but he still was one of the best AWPers in the world for a very long time. I don't understand what you're saying because you're arguing a point which in no way relates to my initial argument. NaVi before were making top 4 regularly, now they aren't. s1mple is a very high impact player if he is allowed to be, which he currently isn't due to the lack of good leadership. But please continue in your delusional world where flamie (#12 in the world) is better than s1mple (#4 in the world)
2017-03-02 23:18
can you tell me what s1mple did this tournament? haha good meme " guardian still one of the best"
2017-03-02 23:20
again you're quoting things I didn't say and you're using 1 tournament as a reference for your argument. I said "GuardiaN still WAS (PAST TENSE) one of the best AWPers" Over the last 3 months: - s1mple: 1.19 rating, 0.84 KPR, 67% round contribution. - flamie: 1.14 rating, 0.76 KPR, 67% round contribution. you really are delusional man

IEM = failure of WESA and PEA! All eliminated teams are WESA or owned by WESA or PEA. All teams which advanced (excluding NAVi) are not connected to WESA nor PEA. Navi will play quarters vs. favorite Astralis and will be probably eliminated. This event is a massacre of WESA and PEA! The worst event in history. In addition WESA owned organizer ESL is under big critics by pros and fans. IEM Kato is awesome! :D I love it!
2017-03-02 22:25

direct confirmation how toxic s1mple is. if you have to point out that you are not like enemies (when you play in the same team)....gg k, now when they managed to survive they are "friends" and trust in each other. after next fail, s1mple toxic again and huge talks inc. again? lul #freeNaVi

This is the most idiotic interview in the history of cs. 1. Navi is probably the best paid team in Russia - But they dont practice and therefor have a shitty mappool? - I dont understand, are you retarded? 2. Never have i in my life seen so many excuses in one box of explaining your bad performance. - When they lose "They were not in the game.".. When they win "They were.".. Sure.. Cause that is how it works.. NaVi is top1 in the world they just not in the game. 3. It all seems to me like they handle things very unprofessionally. - They dont prepare, they come up with excuses, they fool around between games and dont heat themselfs up for the next onces, they are not friends when they lose lans..
