IEM Sydney preview

IEM Sydney kicks off tomorrow, May 3rd, with the group stage played in the Swiss format. Here is our preview of all eight teams partaking in the $200,000 event taking place at the Qudos Bank Arena.

IEM Sydney will garner four teams residing in the top10, including finalists of the last two big events Astralis and FaZe, as well as four underdogs outside of it, such as Chinese ViCi and Australians Chiefs.

The tournament will begin with the Swiss format in the group stage, which will determine four teams advancing to the single elimination, best-of-three playoffs.

The match-ups of the first round are:

Wednesday, May 3rd
05:00 Denmark North  vs. North America OpTic
06:10  Brazil SK  vs. China ViCi
07:20 Denmark Astralis  vs. Australia Chiefs
08:30 Europe FaZe  vs. Australia Renegades

For more information about the event, such as full schedule, prize distribution and talent lineup, head over to the viewer's guide.

Without further ado, let's get into our preview where we take a look at each team and their chances in Sydney:

Having kept their #1 spot in the ranking for more than five months now, the Danish powerhouse is heading into IEM Sydney as one of two clear favorites alongside FaZe.

Astralis and the European mixture have recently established a new exciting rivalry, as they played each other in the last two big finals and shared a total of eight maps, five of which went to at least 28 rounds.

Astralis have kept the #1 spot for over five months, but can they make it to half a year?

That makes for the most intriguing storyline of IEM Sydney, where the two are more than likely to meet again and Astralis are now facing a threat of losing their edge within the elite, having dropped the last encounter with Finn "karrigan" Andersen's squad at StarSeries.

With two more dangerous teams in attendance Down Under, North and SK, the Swiss format could play out in a way where the two best teams in the world meet in semis, which would put Astralis in real danger of conceding their place at the very top come Monday.

FaZe (#2) Age Rating

The other side of the newest rivalry that we discussed above are, of course, none other than FaZe, who had a lot of firsts at StarSeries last month: first series victory against Astralis, first big title, first MVP for the newest addition NiKo.

Bringing an extra layer of insurance, the Bosnian superstar has elevated FaZe's play to a whole new level where they can consistently challenge titles, as we've seen in Kiev and Katowice in the last two months.

FaZe are all but a lock for their third final in a row

Much like Astralis, karrigan and company can now take on anyone on any map but Cobblestone, perhaps due to their playmaking abilities and fantastic pistol handling, be it in actual pistol rounds or their famous Deagle buys.

FaZe's Cache seems to have suffered at StarSeries, though, so it'll be interesting to see whether they ironed out the wrinkles on what used to be one of their best maps. If they have, and if they figured out how to handle the tricky anti-forcebuys and anti-ecos, FaZe could very well lift another trophy on Sunday.

SK are still looking to redeem themselves after a poor run in March and April, exiting two big events, IEM Katowice and SL i-League StarSeries Season 3 Finals, in the group stage.

Their win at cs_summit was small, but it holds a fair amount of importance for SK due to the confidence boost it provides, especially for FalleN who had been struggling to find his form for months.

felps, coldzera, and fer will need to be in great form for SK to pass semis

Another group stage exit for SK is practically out of the question considering the competition at IEM Sydney, where the Brazilians will be heavily favored against at least half of the participating teams and have a good chance against the other top10 rosters.

Simply thanks to the sheer firepower they can put up, SK will always be a dangerous opponent even for the best teams in series, but it comes with a condition of coldzera, fer, and felps being in good form.

5th-6th Poland IEM Katowice
3rd-4th United States DreamHack Masters Las Vegas
5th-8th United States ELEAGUE Major (4/5 of the current lineup)

Throughout 2017, North has been consistent in making playoffs each time, but they have struggled in the series that followed, disappointing in matches in which the Danes were favored.

aizy's addition to the team in February has been far from fruitful. While he always showed up in groups, his performances in North's elimination matches have been sub-par, as he finished below 0.80 rating in each series they lost at their last three events (against SK in Vegas, Immortals in Katowice, and HellRaisers in Kiev).

aizy hasn't been able to keep up in series

Whether it's nerves or just inconsistency in general, aizy needs to step up in playoffs for North to at least approach the level the then-dignitas had around September to October last year.

The second-best Danish squad are facing OpTic first, and that is not a free pass despite William "RUSH" Wierzba's team's circumstances (James "hazed" Cobb standing in). If North have one of their slow starts on day one, they'll have a tough road to playoffs.

3rd United States cs_summit Spring
11th-12th  Poland IEM Katowice (4/5 of the current lineup)
9th-12th United States DreamHack Masters Las Vegas (4/5th of the current lineup)
12th-14th United States ELEAGUE Major (4/5 of the current lineup)

OpTic has been trying to stabilize their roster ever since Peter "stanislaw" Jarguz's departure. After Spencer "Hiko" Martin's tryout didn't go very well in February and March, Jason "jasonR" Ruchelski came into the picture as their new in-game leader, who has had no previous experiences in that area.

OpTic showed promise at cs_summit with their new player by placing third despite getting knocked down to the lower bracket at the very beginning by Cloud9, beating Liquid and taking revenge on Jake "Stewie2K" Yip's team before falling short to Gambit.

hazed will stand-in for jasonR at IEM Sydney

Their circumstances have changed again ahead of IEM Sydney, which they'll have to attend with their coach, hazed, as jasonR won't be able to make it to Australia.

If OpTic don't do well there, the $200,000 event won't hold much importance for them due to the stand-in situation, but a good result could shape their future in a different way than expected. jasonR is on trial after all, so if hazed leads OpTic to, say, a semi-final and a good showing there, who knows whether that won't be enough for the squad to change their minds about their new fifth.

Renegades have, like OpTic, gone through a turbulent couple of months, releasing Ricardo "Rickeh" Mulholland and Yaman "yam" Ergenekon while adding former Selfless player Nifty as well as Serbian talent nexa.

Their manager, Chris "GoMeZ" Orfanellis, had nothing but great things to say about the new roster's boot camp in Belgrade in early April, although since then the Australians conceded three out of four matches in ESL Pro League.

Renegades aim to get offline experience with their new players

Renegades now have a chance to show their new players in Sydney for the first time offline, which will probably be a stressful experience for nexa, who has just joined his first professional team.

In any case, USTILO's team, and particularly the Serbian newcomer, are looking to gain some much-needed pedigree in their home country.

ViCi formed in February with a six-man roster, when VG.CyberZen split in half to create two separate lineups under the same banner.

Since then, advent and company lost two of their original members, KunHua "LOVEYY" Bai and ZhiShen "amtV" Zhang, and added Freeman from ENZO in mid-April.

China get another chance to make their mark

The new ViCi secured their place at IEM Sydney via the Chinese qualifier, defeating some of the region's best teams, including 5POWER, their sister team VG.Renascence, and perhaps most importantly TYLOO in the final.

The Australian event serves as another chance for an Asian team to gain experience, after three different teams attended StarSeries last month.

1st  Australia Acer CyberGamer Premier League Finals

With their win at Acer CyberGamer Premier League and a spot at IEM Sydney in the ANZ qualifier, Chiefs have established themselves as the best team residing in Australia.

Most recently, however, tucks's team missed out on a chance to attend the Asia Minor after falling short to local rivals Immunity in the grand final of the Oceania qualifier.

Chiefs' first match-up are Astralis

Chiefs have very little international experience, as the majority of their current lineup only attended ESEA Season 22 Global Challenge in August last year. Due to that, a win against the established teams would be nothing short of a miracle.
