SK beat FaZe to win IEM Sydney

SK Gaming have won IEM Sydney after defeating FaZe 3-1 in the title decider (16-12 on Train, 16-7 on Cache, 13-16 on Inferno and 16-11 on Overpass).

The series kicked off on Train, FaZe's map pick, but it was SK who looked the livelier right from the start as they got out to a 3-0 lead after winning the pistol round with an A split, with Marcelo "coldzera" David picking up three kills.

FaZe then won the first gun round thanks to two key frags from Håvard "rain" Nygaard, cutting off the rotation from the CTs, but then they had to deal with a hard reset as SK took the next round. That would be the pattern for the rest of the half as every time FaZe won a round they were instantly countered by the Brazilians, who took a commanding 12-3 lead.

The second half began with FaZe winning a messy pistol with a defuse through a smoke grenade. After planting the bomb while on eco, SK got their first round of the half, but they were instantly reset as FaZe won the next round thanks to three quick kills from Nikola "NiKo" Kovač.

Finn "karrigan" Andersen then went huge, picking up back-to-back triple kills, with Fabien "kioShiMa" Fiey following that up with a 1v2 clutch. With a trio of kills, João "felps" Vasconcellos powered SK to hit 14 rounds, but FaZe regained control of the game and brought the deficit to just two rounds.

SK Gaming win IEM title

The momentum was now firmly with FaZe, but SK were not going to let a comeback happen, winning two rounds in a row, the second of which in a 2v4 situation, to lock down the map and take the lead in the series.

Next up was Cache, which saw FaZe get out to a 3-0 lead on the CT side after denying SK's A push in the pistol round. However, once we reached the gun rounds the impetus of the game changed completely: they won 11 of the next 12 rounds as FaZe simply could not keep up with their blistering pace.

Now playing on the CT side, SK further added to their lead by taking the pistol round, but then FaZe hit back on a force buy thanks to a fantastic Desert Eagle shot from NiKo, which opened up the map for them.

FaZe followed that up with two more rounds, bringing the scoreline to 7-13, but SK tightened up their defence, winning four rounds in a row to take the map at 16-7.

FalleN was on fire on Cache

FaZe got off to a flying start on Inferno, winning the opening six rounds to put SK in danger of getting blown out. After getting their economy in order, SK won their first round of the map thanks to three AWP kills from coldzera, with Fernando "fer" Alvarenga winning two 1v1 situations against Aleksi "allu" Jalli in the subsequent rounds.

Money remained low on SK's side after two close rounds, so when FaZe got their seventh round on the board, the Brazilians had to eco. The scoreline bloomed to a 9-3 advantage for FaZe, forcing SK to call a tactical pause. The short break allowed the Brazilians to halt FaZe's momentum and they picked up two much-need rounds to bring the scoreline to 5-10.

SK got out to a fantastic start on the Terrorist side, winning eight of the first ten rounds to take the lead for the first time on this map. It looked like SK had the game in the bag, but a 1v2 clutch from rain helped FaZe to swing the tides back in their favour, with the European team following it up with three more rounds to seal a 16-13 victory.

rain's 1v2 clutch turned the game on its head

Map four, Overpass, began with SK taking the pistol round but failing to capitalise on that win as FaZe hit back on a force buy, with rain and NiKo getting two frags apiece. After giving up the next two rounds to build up their bank, the Brazilians got a second round on the board, but a massive blunder on their part prevented them from tying the game at 3-3 as karrigan pulled off a ninja defuse with three opponents still alive.

The rest of the half was highly contested as neither team could string rounds together, with FaZe taking a narrow 9-6 lead into the break.

With the sides swapped, SK's defense flourished. They won the first five rounds to bring the scoreline to 11-9 and force FaZe to call a tactical pause. With their economy in shambles, the European team went for a force buy, but they s till managed to win the round thanks to a 1v3 clutch from rain. It was starting to look like a repeat of the Inferno game, but this time around SK did not let their lead slip away, winning five of the next six rounds to lock down the map, 16-11.

Taco threw so many rounds it was almost like SK was playing a 4v5, he really needs to step up if he wants to stay on SK, good thing that Coldzera was on hardcarry mode tho.

Totally agree with you, mate. He lost so many duels and clutch situations. They lost Inferno because of him. It's been a long time that he's not performing well. And if you check stats, even worse. -12 and ADR 63.9. I'd say that he's negative on every tournament.

His Stats (-12 ADR 63.9) are this bad becaus his role in the team. He might threw some rounds. ok. this is not good. but those stats are mostly because his role as entry fragger. and Taco is the BEST entry fragger in the world, that's why his is still in SK
2017-05-07 13:26
I swear he is just a support player. Rain right now is by far the best entry

TACO |
Brazil TonimSan
TACO is not the entry fragger for a while already. He's the lurker and plays totally apart from the team, trying to stop rotations. He is always by himself in squeaky on Cache, Halls on Inferno, Brown Halls on Train, Apartments in Mirage, "the pipe that leads to B, which I don't know the name in english" in Overpass, long on Cbble.
2017-05-07 18:29
its their default lol they dont have fixed positions

TACO has fixed position, unless they decide to change pace. He is ALWAYS in these positions.
2017-05-07 21:48
yes, but he is not lurking, it depends on where theyre gonna hit.. if they go where he is he is entry, otherwise he goes as lurker or fake.. both tough positions to do, cuz he is not usually in a good position to lurk (bad positions to listen to steps of rotations)

No way! I can't take this excuse anymore. "It's because this role". What about as CT? Is he entry too? No, no. Dumb plays, barely won duel and clutches don't have to say about it. I'm not saying that he's shit, no. Just saying tha he can't handle this level of competition. Just look at all-time stats and other entries. He's almost negative in his career.
2017-05-07 19:45
lol as ct he plays solo and toughests places u cant have 5 players with positive k/d and cold +20 unless u win every game 16 0 lol

And he still in SK because coldzera is on fire. When cold is not on superlevel or fallen, they loose. Because felps and fer can't carry 2 or more. All 4 needs to be on point to carry Taco and win tournaments. Taco still bad winning or not. Just matter of time to replace him.
2017-05-07 19:56
actually taco was the best in sk at the end of 2016 when they were playing horrible. Then fer starts to shine when fnx leave i think fox before and now with felps he didn't have that chimestry with him maybe with this win taco will get more confident because fallen is back. They will not kick him, they need him for the major if sk wants to get back that top1.

even Allu had twice the amount of frags that taco had on overpass, not to mention that taco threw a bunch of crucial rounds on inferno and overpass.
2017-05-07 13:09
yeah but Allu actually has the easiest role, he gets the AWP at every opportunity possible, while Taco has to do whatever role is left. The best in the world at doing that is bodyy
2017-05-07 16:06
Shut up!!!
2017-05-07 13:06
Did you fucking see how bad Karrigan, Kio, and Allu were playing. If SK had to play with 4, then Faze was playing with 2 :/

Brazil Mirekz
dude even allu had twice the amount of kills than taco on that last map, and its not about the kills, its about the dumb mistakes that he was making, he made SK lose so many rounds where they had the advantage for instance that round where it was a 4v1 bomb planted taco was guarding the bomb and he lets Karrigan defuse it that round where Rain kills fallen planting the bomb cus taco didn't clear the site properly or when it was a 2v1 and fallen was defusing the bomb, taco shoots through the smoke giving away his position to Rain and Rain kills him and wins the round, so many dumb mistakes by him that made SK lose crucial rounds, Kio and Allu were not getting many kills but they didn't make dumb mistakes like taco did.
2017-05-07 13:46
Taco had more kills than Allu over the whole series... just because Allu had one decent map doesn't mean he played better. And yeah Taco made a couple stupid mistakes, but so did Allu, Kio, and Karrigan, it just didn't look as bad because they weren't in as favorable a positions. How the fuck do you think SK kept getting into 4v1s, 3v1s, etc?

You're dumb no offence. Like they was playing 4v5? I agree he threw a few rounds, but that was because he was outaimed by either NiKo or rain. However, did you see kioshiMa and allu? They played so trash. More like 4v2. Only rain and NiKo was playing hardcore these 4 maps.

Brazil Mirekz
no, i don't consider being outaimed as a mistake, the mistakes that i'm talking about have to do with dumb plays that taco made. let me show some examples. this round, clips.twitch.tv/ClumsyTacitDuckTebowing 4v3 FaZe on a force buy, the only guy at the bomb is rain, he is at pit, taco "clears pit" but he does it wrong, he doesn't see rain there and they lose a round where they had a huge advantage because of taco not clearing the bomb properly. or that other round while it was a 4V1 and Karrigan was the only guy from FaZe alive. bomb is about to explode and taco is the one guarding it, he lets Karrigan full defuse the bomb, remember it was a 4v1 all taco needed to do was watch the bomb as they backed off and he failed. or the other round where Rain throws a smoke at the floor and its a 2v1 (taco, fallen vs rain) taco starts to shoot at the smoke, by doing that he gives away his position and Rain kills him through the smoke and kills fallen after that too. those have nothing to do with being out aimed those are silver mistakes that a pro at a tier 1 team should never make, btw the ones that i mentioned above are only from Overpass, taco made SK lose crucial rounds on inferno too, like that round where rain was on pit and taco was on apartments, 3 SK players came through arch it was basically a 4v1 at the bomb, you would expect that taco would jump from apartments and try to kill rain right?? nope as the 3 SK players peek from arch taco decides to go back to middle, rain is at a headshot position and he end ups killing 2 SK players and they win the round. all taco needed to do there to win that round was jump from apartments while rain was shooting at his teammates. and i'm not even mentioning all the 1v1 situations that he lost.

Epic stuff, and still tons more refinement and little improvements to come yet from this new SK 2.0 IMHO #1 ranking deserved already, writing was on the wall at summit and how they showed up here, but will be denied until PGL.. expect an even higher level of gameplay from both teams by then, hope to see a rematch in the major final.. TACO was decent in the first 3 maps. His overpass was horrible, but keep in mind FaZe had allu and kio. It's definitely not insane that SK won overpass, even with TACO finishing up with 6 frags
2017-05-07 11:54
It's damn hard to be alone at barrels for instance, or having to watch short and monster.. give him a break IMO Stats don't say it all, yes it was less than he expects of himself I'm sure, far from his best or even an average game, but he isn't BAD or he wouldn't be in his ROLE on the greatest lineup in history ! if it was so easy to upgrade him it would have happened by now. Trust in FalleNgod :D
2017-05-07 12:10

2017-05-07 11:56
TACO isn't that bad, he has to solo anchor the hard to handle site in a bunch of situations and often be the distraction/human shield making space entering sites. He plays his role well and was chosen by FalleN for his specific skills and mindset in the first place. And ever since, they went to challenging, winning and then dominating 2016, had the target on them that #1 team always receives, resulting in the inevitable struggles.. but they didn't need to get rid of him to come back to the top. And they are quickly becoming even more of an epic team ? coldzera is #1 player in the world still IMHO.. NiKo #2 but cold is just that little bit better all round.. NiKo is better in his own way but overall I give a tiny edge to cold with snax shox and device all deserving mentions. Really there is so much talent these days and the overall scene level is still rising so I feel lucky to witness it.. even Valve can't fuck the game up enough to ruin it
2017-05-07 12:00
About taco: he threw AT LEAST 5 important rounds. He didn't have impact frags and he can't retake for his life. He SUCKS, and that's EVERY SINGLE GAME. Caps lock serves to emphasize how much I hate him lol
2017-05-07 12:06
Easy to say from spectator position :(
2017-05-07 12:08
Very true. Although I have to admit Taco sucks on CT side overpass, he always sucked on those barrels, him and Cold should change their setup ffs

Brazil Valhalla00
He holds B overpass when the rest of the team is going to A. when the play is good, SK won the round easily. if goes bad (Taco doesn't make a good hold B and dies) SK still have a chance to win the round. he has a specific role in the team that many people don't understand. PLEASE, TRY TO UNDERSTAND HIM
2017-05-07 13:39
No, he's a liability playing on those barrels, I've seen dozens of matches from them on overpass, it's always the same thing, he always gets rekt there. Also, most of the time he's got Cold with him there, so you're wrong saying he holds alone.
2017-05-07 13:41
#313
 |
Brazil Valhalla00
wait... are you talking about CT or TR, because CT is Taco and Cold, but in TR he holds it alone (when I say "hold" is like hold the CT players in Bomb site B, not allowing them to backup the other site)
2017-05-08 20:35
niko threw away also a round, Faze could have won overpass

He's stupid. Why? He peek in an unnecessary timing. Thats so dumb. I dont know what to say even if you look at the cam, cold and fallen look pissed when he made that. Its not about role. Lots of dumb mistakes made by him especially after plant. But really last map in overpass was unacceptable, only 6 kills total 28 rounds like pronax.

well, was that play a mistake from Taco alone? I mean, that wasnt responsability only for taco, all the players from sk should be covering the defuse, not only him. I bet that if he would be dead in the round you would put the guilt in another player, or maybe say that this kind of thing "happens". That play wasnt olny his fault, was a bad play for all the players.

Allu performed really well in starladder. Totally agree that today was not his day.
2017-05-07 13:21
I am sorry to say that but even though he performs good he is not that good of an AWPer, he is not like a tier3 AWPer of course, I still think oskar will fit better than allu
2017-05-07 14:29
no he doesnt. The point of allu being in faze, is bc Allu might not be the best awper, but he is by far the smartest one. He has the best positioning, really good at clutches and never over peaks with the awp. Eventhough oskar and mixwell are better pure awpers, they dont even come close to allu his total package

I agree Allu plays smart for the most part. But one thing mixwell has going for him is that he is equally deadly on a rifle. Allu with a rifle is like having Bot Brian on the team. But I like allu in faze, he fits in well with karrigan as the igl.
2017-05-07 16:41
not really, true skillwise he maybe isnt, but he has always good positioning and gets the kills. I would rather have a much better awper than a slightly better rifler

Coldzera looking like the best player in the world again. Gonna be tough winning against them if they keep playing like that. Faze looked kinda bland in the final. Only Niko and Rain really played well all maps. Karrigan, Allu and Kio need to step it up if they want to win against SK/Astralis/"VP on lan". Good tournament overall by Faze though. I think winning against Astralis was a huge plus for them. SK should be the clear favorites for the next big tournament. They came and they conquered IEM Sydney!

conclusion is that SK's era never ended. Jealous EU fanboys said it did, but it was all transparent lie SK been the best team for over year now, top1 and will be for next years to come Any other team isnt even near of level SK

Mm they have never been utterly bad for sure. When you consider whats been going on they only had one group exit i think this year or two. I wouldnt say they have been nr one this year but rather theres no clear cut nr 1 right now. Overall this year astralis has achieved tbe most but sk and faze not far behind for sure. Right now astralis looks worse than faze and sk. Can be the other way in the next tournament again. Thats why there isnt a clear nr1

TACO did some mistakes and he looks nervous sometimes... he needs more suport and confidence! And cold is 'just' the best player in this game.
2017-05-07 20:46
That final overpass... awesome. That was the best counter strike match I've ever seen.
2017-05-07 23:01
Fazer got lucky. It should've been much easier for SK. 3-0 easy

allu destroyed fallen? what? stop being a blind fanboy and check the event stats hltv.org/?pageid=348&eventid=2713 Fallen was top 5 at rating, top 1 a AWP kills, top 2 K/D diff, top 1 AWP kills for round, he was also in the top 5 sucess opening duels. waay better than Allu

What you forgot to mention here is that they were leading the whole time, ofcourse SK's frags will be a lot higher. Rating this, rating that. All I'm saying is that I saw allu crushed fallen in those awp duels. Even when Fallen was boosted and was angling allu, he couldn't finish him off.. Allu took him down, although fallen was waiting for him. And like I said, allu played terrible in this whole game. Sad. If all the FaZe players was on fire, they woul've won, I'm pretty sure of that. I'm not even fan of allu.. Just saying he's a better awper than fallen overall=) coldzera always carry sk tho.
