G2 beat North, 3-1, to win ESL Pro League

G2 and North faced off in the grand final of the fifth season of ESL Pro League. The French side took it, 3-1. The results were 16-13 on Cache, 16-5 on Cobblestone, 14-16 on Overpass, and 16-3 on Inferno.

The match started out on Cache, with North splitting onto A and planting the bomb. The round ended with G2 winning the 2vs2 afterplant and taking the first round. After an eco, Kristian "k0nfig" Wienecke clutched out a 1vs3 to win the first gun round, clearing the B site.

North quickly took the lead after that, winning five rounds in a row. G2 were able to win a few rounds back, but North quickly regained control and ran away with the half, 10-5. G2 were quick to plant on B in the second pistol round, and were able to stave off North’s retake, to keep the match alive.

G2 won the two anti-ecos, but another big triple by k0nfig in the B site gave the Danes the first gun round and kept them in a solid 11-8 lead. G2, lead by a particularly inspired Kenny "kennyS" Schrub, and North found themselves at a 12-12 stalemate. Finally, though, G2 were able to take advantage of North’s poor economy and close the first map 16-13.

kennyS was a monster on Cache

The second map, Cobblestone, started with G2 winning the pistol round after defending the B site, not allowing North to plant the bomb. A forcebuy ace by Emil "Magisk" Reif with three tec9 and two UMP kills gave North the second round, but a double by Richard "shox" Papillon with an M4 and triple by Dan "apEX" Madesclaire with a CZ got G2 back on track to a 4-1 lead. The French side went on to take a crushing lead in the first half, closing it 12-3 without giving the Danes a Chance.

A big triple by k0nfig defending on A gave North some hope early in the second half, but were still a long way from coming back. The French side then won the first gun round, followed it up, and didn’t look back, taking the 2-0 in the best of three, 16-5.

The match was in G2’s hands with a 2-0 lead after Cobblestone

The first pistolA on Overpass started with G2 getting an early three man lead, but a teamkill by Nathan "NBK-" Schmitt on shox and a double by k0nfig gave north the round. After winning the anti-ecos, it was finally G2 who took the first gun round, thanks to a big triple by Alexandre "bodyy" Pianaro and a 1vs1 win by NBK-, but North were able to shut the French side down and completely took over the half, closing it 13-2.

After winning the pistol, it looked like North were just going to close the match out, but a big triple by NBK- in the forcebuy kept his team in the match. G2 tried to mount a comeback, and with 15-14 on the scoreboard and the wind in their sails, North rushed long and killed both kennyS and apEX, forcing the CT side to spread. Finally, the Danes were able to close down the comeback and take the map 16-14.

North kept the dream alive by denying G2 a last round comeback on Overpass

Doubles by shox and apEX gave G2 the first pistol round, on CT side, on Inferno, and followed it up against a forcebuy from the Danes. Having won the second gun round and an anti-eco, G2 established an early 5-0 lead. After trading a couple rounds with North, G2 were able to gain the momentum back and sail through the half, 13-2.

After cruising through Inferno, G2 got to lift the trophy

North won the second pistol round, but G2 were able to take over B site on the forcebuy and crushed North's second half start. After winning against the forcebuy, and tallying the fifteenth round on the board, G2 won the match, 16-3, to crown themselves champions of the ESL Pro League Season 5.

Funniest part is that they started EPL Season 5 with 2-6 score, then there was a moment they were in last place with 4-8 score. And they managed to win 12 out of 14 left games, finishing 2nd in League Ladder. And being with a 1-2 scoreline in their group, they managed to win 2 games and finished the groupstage on first place of their group, getting directly into semis. Well done, G2.

They are a good team. Just inconsistent and a very slow start. Like they lost to c9 on inferno and C9 sucks on Inferno. I have hopes this team can become better than fanatics dominance over the scene.

Great series from G2. They always looked to be a level ahead and a step ahead of North and completely deserved the win. k0nfig, despite what some people think of his attitude or trash talking, is an absolute star and he was the MVP of the tournament in my view. G2 are a great team, no doubt. They had a poor start to the tournament but they are really good, individually and as a team. Tough to beat them in a bo3/bo5 since they have a good map pool. It will be interesting to see what they do in a major tournament. KennyS is a monster.

I won't argue against it, but in my opinion I still think it was k0nfig. Had fantastic displays in pretty much every match and he was unreal against Liquid in the semis. He was by far North's best player in the final as well, but G2 won the whole thing so KennyS or bodyy deserve it as well.
2017-06-05 00:26
this is ALWAYS a pleasure to see a precised analysis of the tournament. As a french canadian fan of G2 and nV, I am delighted of the future of this French CS scene. This year is going to be really good, not only for France, but also for Counter Strike with so many very good contenders for titles.

Yeah, G2 is a real top five team (potentially top three) and when they are dominating a tournament like this one where they beat all the good teams (Fnatic, SK, North) without shox playing at a high level, you know the team is legit. EnvyUs have a lot of potential as well. They had a good tournament and they beat some good teams. They are starting to fire on all cylinders and I think with a bit more practice, they can certainly do some damage in future tournaments. The French scene is in a nice state at the moment.

Why do you spam this? No one is saying konfig played bad, ppl are rightfully angered by him being a total asshole with no manners, same with Magisk and shakerbye. Young Danes have no manners. And constantly whine on social media every time they lose a match.

Wrong sir. Ppl do claim him for being rekt not reking or not "fucking" kennys up. For the first time he havent said anything until he in the interview got informed that Kenny's said something bout him,and he answered it back, and the cool thing is hes rlly stod by hes word,so u ,u,u, and u can say this and that, but that is the fact. He also said he fuck luiqid up and bc of him they got it closed 2_0 19_17 on 2.map after a 4_12 comeback in favour of hes aces and clujes,so hes free to say what ever he wan,he backs it up,he's kek hes fearless and none of u can be anything but jalous on him,so keep crying he's my hero

Congrats G2. Well deserved victory. From 1-8 in the online league, to winning the whole thing, what a story. They have insane potential, if they keep up this form I can definitely see them becoming top 1 and being able to beat pretty much every team in the world. Also, people are praising kenny & shox, but bodyy is absolutely insane, this guy can entry, can clutch, can solo hold sites, he's insane. Not suprised he was named the most promising up and coming french star player. Respect.

Feel bad for k0nfig. But it was really nice to see bodyyy stepping up. Shox didn't even need to bring his A game, godlike mode. And this should be a 3-0 if you ask me, a pretty unusual first side by them on the map they lost. And they almost tied it. It will be really hard to stop G2 wiith everyone playing their game. I hope SK come back stronger and with all 5 of them playing their A game. Astralis and FaZe as well. Expecting to see some epic games soon

Maybe because they won the last big tournament before this? With FaZe and Astralis, none of them were on this tournament G2 won btw. SK are performing good, they're improving really well. I also mentioned FaZe and Astralis, so bad b8
2017-06-05 04:27
IEM Sydney is not a big tournament. Only 8 teams and more than half the teams where free wins. The last big events were starladder and IEM Katowice. They where fully stacked out with all good teams and the close contenders that can beat them. The fill out teams in Sydney did not have the potential to beat the only 3 good teams attending.

Well, I kinda agree some teams were missing and the tournament could have been better, so read this as "the last tournament with all of the top 3 teams included". The 5th best included as well. I still think it was a big tournament tho.
2017-06-05 17:20
North are terrible though, have they actually won a single thing since Moscow like a year ago? Only reason they went far at ESL was that the groups was stupid, the 3 best teams played in one group (G2, SK, Fnatic).

They are not that bad tbh. I mean they are definitely top 5 atm, even though I think they are not close to the top 4 teams. They have a lot of fragging power, and MSL is a decent igl, he just needs to step up on his fragging a bit. Problem is, they are never a top 4 team, so they never win a decent tournament

G2 played really well, but north has lots of problems for sure, first aizy is playing really bad, not what it was expected when he got out of faze to join them, second msl needs to go, he doesn't bring anything good to the team, he is not even that good of an igl, plus everyone knows that igl's that can't frag decently don't have sucess these days.

kennyS - A true superstar, a carry AWPer that is also brilliant with rifles and pistols. NBK - A fucking insane anchor, entry fragger and support who can also topfrag. bodyy - What is there to say? Probably best newcomer of the scene in a long time in terms of young skill. This guy is so calm and complete it's scary. Definitely the next shox, a bright future ahead. shox - Had a pretty bad event for his standards, saying that tho, his IGL role is really taking form, and it seems to work really well on a lot of maps. apEX - This guy is just a soldier. Sadly he often does stupid mistakes which ends up killing him early in a round, but he can easily get a 3k spraydown and save a round. Insane aim and accuracy, not so good in positioning I would say
2017-06-05 10:24
