Immortals beat Virtus.pro; Space Soldiers stun SK
Immortals got off on the right foot at ESL One Cologne after defeating Virtus.pro, while Space Soldiers have pulled off the first upset with a stunning victory over SK Gaming.
The second set of matches in Cologne began with an interesting clash between Immortals and Virtus.pro, respectively the No.8 and the No.11 teams in the world, on Cobblestone - the map where the Brazilians had pulled off a sensational comeback against GODSENT just days before.
Virtus.pro got out to a 4-0 lead on the CT side, but then their defence crumbled as they allowed Immortals to pick up seven rounds in a row. The Polish team then finally managed to halt the Brazilians' momentum, with Janusz "Snax" Pogorzelski picking up four kills to prevent a reset, but Immortals still closed out the half with a narrow 8-7 lead following a triple kill from Lucas "steel" Lopes in the very last round.
Immortals further added to their lead by taking the pistol round and the corresponding anti-ecos on the CT side. Virtus.pro then stepped up and won a series of rounds with some great pushes, including a creative B execution in the 22nd round.
With a quad kill from Vito "kNgV-" Giuseppe, Immortals retook the lead, to which they held on until the end as Virtus.pro were never able to find their footing again.
Meanwhile, SK, the No.1 team in the world, took on Space Soldiers, ranked 26th in the world, in a match that had a surprising outcome. The first half was a complete blowout as Space Soldiers produced a masterclass of a performance on the Terrorist side. The Turkish players were brimming with confidence, as evidenced by Engin "ngiN" Kor's 1v4 clutch in the 13th round, and closed out the half with a commanding 12-3 lead.
SK came from the break with fire in their belly and strung nine rounds together to bring the scoreline to 12-12. It looked like the Brazilians would go all the way, but Space Soldiers tightened up their defence and hit match point.
With a stunning 1v3 clutch, Marcelo "coldzera" David kept SK in the game and took the match to the 30th round, in which Space Soldiers would prevail despite being on a tawdry buy.
