Cloud9 survived a double-overtime marathon against mousesports with a 22-20 scoreline on Inferno to advance to ESL One Cologne playoffs.
The beginning of the battle for one of the last two spots in ESL One Cologne between Cloud9 and mousesports saw the former picking up the pistol and going up 2-0 as Counter-Terrorists. The two teams were soon even at 3-3, with Tomáš "oskar" Šťastný clutching two 1v1's (one of which started as a 2v4) and a 1v2.
The next two rounds were exchanged, but the European squad strung four in a row as Cloud9 opted to save guns twice. Timothy "autimatic" Ta's triple and Jake "Stewie2K" Yip's 1v2 clutch then helped the North American side grab the remainder to switch over at 8-7 in their opponents' favor.
Cloud9 added the second pistol round to their name and made it 10-8, before Denis "denis" Howell' five kills across the first two gunrounds equalized the score. The rounds kept going back and forth, each decided by individual plays, such as Chris "chrisJ" de Jong's double in aggression towards banana and Mike "shroud" Grzesiek's triple during a half-buy round.
The tide turned when Cloud9 came out on top of a 2v4 afterplant on the B site and broke mousesports' economy to go up 15-12. However, denis & co. clawed back with Christian "loWel" Garcia Antoran opening up rounds and pushed the match to overtime.
The first half ended with mousesports taking a 2-1 lead on the back of a triple from Robin "ropz" Kool and a quad-kill from oskar. The Czech kept putting up big numbers with a 1v4 clutch in the next round, but Cloud9 survived the two match points thanks to heroics from Stewie2K and autimatic.
Cloud9 put up a fantastic defense in the second overtime with all three rounds going their way, allowing them to finish off the match with a successful B attack in the last seconds for 22-20.
