Next Major to be held in 2018

The next Counter-Strike Major will take place in 2018, as early as January or February, has learned.

This means that the Major circuit for 2017 ended last weekend with PGL Major Krakow, roughly six months after the ELEAGUE Major had come to an end.

The news comes as little surprise as in 2016 Valve had already decided to support just two events, MLG Major Championship: Columbus and ESL One Cologne. Before that, there had been three Majors in both 2014 and 2015.

PGL Major Krakow was the second and last Major of 2017

Valve has asked multiple tournament organisers to submit proposals for the next Major, with ELEAGUE, ESL, PGL, DreamHack and StarLadder among the companies expected to throw their hat in the ring.

And while nothing has been set in stone yet, Valve has confirmed to that the 12th Major in Counter-Strike history is likely to be held in late January or early February, depending on the tournament organiser and venue availability.

2017-07-27 00:23
Yes but theres also an off season so less tournaments to fill the gap. IMO there should be 3-4 a year.
2017-07-27 00:34
4 is too many and 2 is somewhere between just enough and too little. Cluj-Napoca was terrible because it was right after Cologne but it Valve could properly space majors throughout the year then 3 a year would work. Maybe even alternate between 2 and 3 every other year.
2017-07-27 00:41
2017-07-27 00:52
the perfect spacing would be one every 4 months...

2017-07-27 19:24
Whats way too much? Should be every 5/6 months
2017-07-27 00:42
Once every 4 months = 3 a year. Thats no stretch. 2015 and 14 were amazing in terms of the amount of tournies.
2017-07-27 00:52
2017-07-27 01:53
You forget qualifiers, bootcamps, breaks and other tournaments and their qualifiers need to happen. Every 4 months is too much
2017-07-27 02:08
I already mentioned breaks and there's plenty of downtime as is, I'm sure players wouldn't mind 3 majors a year.
2017-07-27 05:57
United Kingdom XNL
3 is too many. It forces teams to miss out big tournaments.
2017-07-27 09:01
You should be selective in the tournaments you attend and there's nothing bigger than majors anyway.
2017-07-27 09:00
United Kingdom XNL
I don't see the problem with just having 1 every year. You still have other big events around them. Having 3 every year would make them less special.
2017-07-27 09:02
Tennis has 4 per year and they're ll huge and every single one is widely respected. I guess you could have just 1 and have it be like the international in Dota but you would really need to make it big. Bo3 groups, crowd funded prize pool, 2 weeks long. The whole 9 yards.
2017-07-27 09:05
United Kingdom XNL
That's what it should be. 1 massive event every year.
2017-07-27 09:07
Yeah but Valve will never do that and having 2 so far apart most of the time the legends from the previous one don't even matter. 3 would space it out so that top teams sre usually still top teams.
2017-07-27 17:51
Dota has like 3-4 majors a year + The International plus countless big events all year, ye lets have only 1 major in CS Go because of nothing.
2017-07-28 02:07
United Kingdom XNL
That's not a fair comparison, when most Dota events last 1-3 days.
2017-07-28 15:43
Yeah and its fair Dota big valve events every year have 20+ million prize pools combined and we don't even get 5 million for the pro's in our game made by the same fucking company? As the international grows the gaps only grows bigger and it's starting to get disgusting. Valve are retarded that's all i'm going to say.
2017-07-29 00:46
yeah let's make it 12 a year, why not
2017-07-27 00:54
Nice exaggeration as if 3 majors a year hasn't already been done.
2017-07-27 05:58

dreamhack cluj
2017-07-27 08:35
I mean my favorite team won dreamhack cluj so I have no problem with it, I mean actual quotes from players or orgs.
2017-07-27 09:03
the negative comments came from fans, and there was less people watching cluj than the major before it. valve decided to increase time between majors to create more hype, and that worked. what exactly are you complaining about?
2017-07-27 09:17
I'm not complaining I'm having a conversation about whether or not more majors would be a better or worse thing, guess that's too hard for you to do. Either way I don't hear any players or orgs complaining about an oversaturation of majors, just irrational fans.
2017-07-27 17:47
do you know why valve hosts majors? hint: it's not for the players or the orgs
2017-07-27 18:02

If be happy with that, EL/MLG in N.A., then in EU probably Starladder/Dreamhack
2017-07-27 00:46
Starladder and Dreamhack would be a step down from ESL in terms of production value IMO. Cologne is the best event of the year IMO, major or not.

2017-07-27 00:21

2017-07-27 07:27
3x1kk > 2x1kk...
2017-07-27 12:55
Russia good1s0n
I think you're missing the point here. Valve give much more money than they did before, and it's kinda weird to demand even more at this stage. 12x1kk is even better, so should they do that? A major is a prestigious event, so it's not that cool to have them often. With many leagues and tournaments emerging, there's no point to have 3 majors/year.
2017-07-27 13:53
I mean, I didn't see many people complain about three majors in 2014 or 2015 (Cluj was bad in itself, not due to low prestige or stuff like that). People wouldn't mind watching more events if the game was better overall, but that's another flaw of a somewhat flawed developer we have. Now we have the last major in July, which leads to no conclusion at the end of the season (year). Therefore teams are forced to make shuffles after the first major of the year, so it doesn't end up being very competitive one (like EL this year). I understand that it's not very fair from me to ask for another million a year, but I guess I just get frustrated after seeing what Dota gets, which made me think that Valve are super sceptical about investing in CS GO for whatever reason.
2017-07-27 15:14

6 months between Major, then it's obvious it is time to put an end to the "8 Legends rule". 4 Legends maximum, if you want to keep that "Legends rule" but you gotta win at least a BO3 in the playoffs (top 4) to be a Legend. 8 Legends (half of the field) is way too much it doesn't give much of a chance (only 8 spots to qualify) to get new teams at the Major.
2017-07-27 00:18
Indonesia rareguy
Wouldn't it be a disappointment for the teams that reached the playoffs? Like BIG or North.
2017-07-27 00:26
Yeah agree, so Valve should make that announcementfor that Jan/Feb 2018 Major that only top 4 will be Legends for the second Major of 2018, the one that should happen in July (if the planning remains the same). I would personally maybe be for less than 4 legends, because in 6 months lots of things happen so even some top 4 finalists could be shit 6 months later for the following Major but i guess Valve and the Major organizer wants to have the biggest names on the scene so they would rather be sure to have lots of big names already qualified for the following Major. I still think 4 Legends instead of 8 would be a good compromise between deleting that "Legends rule" (because it's a great reward for the teams that did well to be invited to the next Major) and the 8 Legends rule (because you only need to win 3 BO1 to be a Legend - i like the swiss system so that's not the problem in my opinion but you should win at least win a BO3 so reach top 4 to be a Legend) in my opinion.
2017-07-27 00:32
I dont believe a team that made playoffs last major isn't even top16 atm
2017-07-27 01:39
Indonesia rareguy
I also thought ouf that. But even if it works like that, 12 Challengers versus 4 Legends, seems like a Takeshi Castle. A lot of rotation will happen on the Challengers, and of course, we and Valve don't want some random team to show up as a challenger.
2017-07-27 10:00
It's kind of a hard compromise to give up. Either we get 12 new teams each major, or we keep the 8 from the last hoping that they maintain a "legend" form. Imo if there's gonna be a big gap in between majors (only 2 a year) it would make more sense to only keep the top 4, as expecting all 8 legend teams to maintain their form seems a bit unrealistic, but it's just my opinion.
2017-07-27 00:33
Agree with you with the high uncertainty that most of 8 Legends keep form and are still strong 6 months later. But, giving only 4 legends spots doesn't necessarly ensure that 12 new teams are playing the next Major, many of those 12 teams that will qualify already played the previous Major (or some before) but at least it gives 4 more spots (12 instead of 8) for upcoming teams to qualify.

Its not only that, how tight wud be the schedule for the teams with so many majors? Look At sk, how many torneys did they participate in the last 3 months? And what did Astralis do? Skipped almost everything for the major. Its just that u have lots of "majors" throughout the year, with 200k plus prizes. Its too much for the teams imo. Or u gonna get all top4 teams only playing the majors in a year, not worth.

2017-07-27 00:22
CS:GO Major aint UCL bro.
2017-07-27 16:23
Totally agree, they should switch to annual World Cup with at least 2,000,000$ prize pool and 32 teams, like all the sports are having The World Cup annually (expect football). It should get bigger coverage, may be TV coverage in some countries and all the matches should be held on stage, with the live crowd watching. Would be anticipated and would get alot of hype, especially if the first place winners will get 1,000,000$ prize.

New prizepool for Majors : 2.5 million $ prizemoney 1 million for 1st 500.000$ for 2nd (BO5 final) 250.000$ for 3rd 150.000$ for 4th (BO3 3rd place decider game) 100.000 for 5th-8th 25.0000$ for 9th 16th (or a bit less than 100.000 for 5th-8th but a bit more money for teams not qualifying to playoffs but giving a bit more money than 25.000$ for teams that won games during swiss phase like 1-3 and 2-3 teams) Only top 4 Legends. 2017-07-27 06:30
Meanwhile Dota 2 has like 4 Majors and the TI. Fuck you Valve. If CSGO had same treatment like Dota 2 in terms of tournament support and back-end development, it would have been 3x more popular and better game than now.
2017-07-27 01:12
+1, and there would be so many better teams
2017-07-27 01:13
+1 i think the only reason valve doesnt stop supporting csgo altogether is because they make too much money from it to be ignored, so they just throw a random update here and there to make us happy and thats about it as soon as csgo stops making absurd amounts of money (and that will happen sooner or later) valve will completely ignore csgo and pretend it doesnt even exist, like tf2
2017-07-27 01:26
you think beggar csgo users can rack up a prize pool like Dota 2 users? 20 million ? Ill be surpirsed if CSGO International prize pool even crosses 1 million..
2017-07-27 03:41
Greece hekzy
Facepalm. CSGO and Dota2 make very similar revenues per year. Just in 2015 Dota2 made only 17million more. A difference of less than 10%. Ao how is it fair that the Dota2 majors have 500% the prizepool?
2017-07-27 09:04
Mate. The prize pool of TI is sponsored by people spending money on LEVELS in the COMPENDIUM...the BATTLE PASS,specifically. it DOES NOT include earnings from elsewhere....Valve doesnt sponsor TI prize pool I doubt there are enough players to fund such a prize pool,as i said before.
2017-07-27 14:23
Greece hekzy
But I'm telling you that the csgo populace generates close to the same revenue as Dota2's populace so what makes you think they can't generate close to the same compendium revenue.

CSGO is dying, if 2018 will have 1m$ prizepool this will be end of cs. Dota has 4 majors with 3m$ per year. And other games will grow

not dying, its just not as big as other games. Its actually growing.

CS most popular fps and will always be...
2017-07-27 02:48
