Cloud9 replace OpTic at DreamHack Masters Malmö

MIRAA
August 22nd, 2017 21:00

OpTic Gaming's spot at DreamHack Masters Malmö will be taken by Cloud9, the event's organisers have revealed.

The last-minute change comes as a result of the recent changes undergone by OpTic, who signed European trio Adam "friberg" Friberg, Aleksi "allu" Jalli and Emil "Magisk" Reif, with a fifth player expected to be revealed soon.

In a statement, DreamHack explained that OpTic can no longer field the core of the lineup that was invited, which means they are no longer eligible to compete in the tournament.

This will be the first event for Cloud9 since recruiting Tarik "tarik" Celik and William "RUSH" Wierzba from OpTic as replacements for longtime duo Mike "shroud" Grzesiek and Jordan "n0thing" Gilbert

Cloud9 will replace OpTic in Malmö

DreamHack Masters Malmö will run from August 30 to September 3 at Malmö Arena, with 16 teams duking it out for their share of the $250,000 prize pool.

The final list of participants for the event looks as follows:

Brazil SK  Denmark Astralis
Europe FaZe France G2
Denmark North  Ukraine Natus Vincere
Poland Virtus.pro  Sweden fnatic
United States Cloud9 Brazil Immortals
Kazakhstan Gambit Sweden NiP

They dont even have 5 yet they have ringers, and its probably not by their choice. Making drastic roster changes forfeits your spot, i think you need to keep at least 3 original players.
2017-08-22 22:12
I think it's just because they wanted another NA team and optic have moved to EU, only reasonable explanation imo

No its in rules if you dont have at least 3 of original players your removed. I believe sk got fucked over from something similar in past.

Yeah but I still think it had to do with the NA part

If they are able to invite a different team at this moment, they should be able to confirm the invite of Optic with new lineup. It is ridiculous to invite C9 over Optic's new roster.

Does your brain not comprehend that if you change 3 or more players your disqualified... Its a rule and the event host is just upholding tournament rules. Similar thing happened to sk @ eleague because they changed orgs. Its optics own fault for changing so many players, they knew the rules and its cost them malmo and eleague spot.

And C9 could have changed five players day before they got this late invitation. It is not sensible. And the rules dont say that the same organisation could not get two separate invites with two different rosters. According to rules they could have canceled the Optic's first invite and then invite them again. Sure that would be stupid but it is more stupid to invite worse team which is happening now. The rule is there to ensure that there would be no crashed teams with poor rosters.

how can you be dq'd of a tournament you're not even attending yet ? I think you're missing the point although I agree that inviting C9 makes more sense than an unfinished Optic roster

Because they where already signed up for the tournament with 5 players when only 1 of the 5 players are on that team on event day your get dq'd. Are eu really this retarded? Its a simple rule that the organzier followed.

No I think you're still missing the point. If you consider Optic is a new team they could have received an invite even if they got dq'd before. C9 wasn't signed up and they got invited.

You're not paying attention. C9 could have changed all their players day before this late invitation which would have happened after optic changed their roster. And the rules dont deny giving two separate invitation to a same org.

optic's qualifying lineup is gone and cloud9 has 2 ex-optic players, probably thats why
2017-08-22 21:03
OG lost their core lineup, just like Majors work, you lose 3 player, you lose the spot.
2017-08-22 21:06
the merits optic got invited on was gone when 80% of the lineup is not there anymore
2017-08-22 21:07
understandable if they had come through qualifying, however they were just an invited team so i feel like it should stick seeing as c9 didnt receive that invite at all regardless. but i suppose dreamhack can do what they want and im glad to see c9 over this mishmash optic squad. gonna be a great event!
2017-08-22 21:10
Liquid wouldve had 3 250k+ events in the span of 10 days if they had accepted. Im guessing also because their e league group is close as well. Over saturation is probable cause.
2017-08-22 21:11
real reason is money... optic new lineup is not from USA, and optic was the only US team in the event. No US team in the event is equal to less north american viewers, less interest (and money) from advertisers. Cloud9 fills this gap.

Both things are true. They are kicking OpTic because they wanted to invite an NA team and the old roster disbanded
2017-08-22 21:23
Yeah, but it is stupid they don't say it out loud that they need US team to keep sponsors happy. Or at least "this slot was for NA team and we want an NA team".
2017-08-22 21:29
or cause cloud9's a top team and didn't receive an invite? Not really that difficult to understand. Even teams like NIP received an invite over C9.
2017-08-22 21:23
Look at the teams. C9 are the only US players in the tournament. They want as much coverage as possible to keep sponsors happy who pay the whole thing. Simple stuff in a world of business.
2017-08-22 21:26
There may be some truth in that but it would be delusional to say C9 aren't worthy of an invite. They've become much better in the past few months and are becoming a worthy contending team.
2017-08-22 21:28
Ofcourse. C9 is the best NA team at the moment, so obviously invite them, if you need an NA team.
