Liquid to ESL One NY grand final over SK

September 16th, 2017 22:24

Liquid have become the first grand finalists at ESL One New York 2017 after defeating SK 2-1 (22-18 on Inferno, 5-16 on Overpass, and 16-14 on Cobblestone).

Second day action in the Big Apple kicked off with the best-of-three semi-final series between Liquid and SK. The North American squad started Inferno on the CT-side and picked up the pistol round victory after Peter "stanislaw" Jarguz got a double kill with Dual Berettas.

In the second round, Nick "nitr0" Cannella got a triple kill to make it 2-0. Jonathan "EliGE" Jablonowski & company also secured the first weapon round but SK responded in the following one with Epitacio "TACO" de Melo's triple kill (4-1). That wasn't the start of a streak for SK as Liquid extended their lead to 5-1. Liquid were 11-4 ahead after the first half.

Liquid reach the grand final

Marcelo "coldzera" David won the second half pistol round with a quad kill and SK won the anti-ecos to close the gap (11-7). nitr0 had two entry kills in the first weapon round to halt SK's comeback progress. coldzera showed up in the following round with an ace (12-8). The map went to overtime after Liquid failed to win consecutive rounds on the T-side (15-15).

EliGE and nitr0 clutched a 2vs4 in the first round of overtime. Liquid also won the third round to lead 17-16 at halftime in overtime. The tie couldn't be broken after the second half in overtime (18-18). Liquid closed the map out in the second overtime, winning 22-18.

The story on Overpass was different as the T-sided Brazilians won eight of the first nine rounds (8-1). Gabriel "FalleN" Toledo & company had an 11-4 at halftime. coldzera's triple kill in the pistol round on the defensive side gave SK their twelfth round and they won the map 16-5.

SK finish in 3-4th place

The last and deciding map of the series was Cobblestone where Liquid started on the CT-side. Josh "jdm64" Marzano's team won the pistol round but SK replied with a force buy victory (1-1). After the sides exchanged round once more, Liquid started a streak that lasted three rounds (5-2).

The score before the last round of the first half was 7-7 and Liquid won the last round with inferior equipment. The Brazilians won the first three rounds in the second half to take the lead but Liquid hit back, winning the first weapon round to trail 9-10.

Liquid ran away with the game as SK's defense collapsed and the North Americans acquired four match points. Liquid won the map 16-14 and series 2-1, advancing to the grand final at ESL One New York 2017.

2017-09-16 22:26
Yeah, SK's plays and strats seems so sloppy. Former SK would never commit such mistakes, it's almost lack of discipline.

Tell me about it. They drop rounds the FNX-team would never DREAM of dropping. Not that I'm saying FNX was the problem though. Maybe you're right, and their discipline washed away somwhere and they just don't care that much anymore.
2017-09-16 22:30
I guess they are trying to reinvent themselves, and are actually making things worse, or are still in the process of setting things right. With so many teams changing players and having their honeymoons, they must think they need to change something in their setup as well.
2017-09-16 22:36
havent watched this game, but last time i watched them go down felps looked too lost. He is young and probably the rest of the team has to take some load off him. Hope SK recover from this, as they still have one of the most disciplined team alongside Astralis.
2017-09-16 22:36
And he's bottom fragging too much these past two torneys. I understand TACO having the "worst" rating - much due to his role - but felps is always in the bottom too.
2017-09-16 22:56
Yeah, sad to say it but felps didn't bring anything to the table they didn't have before.. He is like an overaggressive, less skilled, and way less clutch/brained player than Fnx.. Fnx even hungover was better.. And has lots of experience that probably helped too. Now I know there were some internal issues but something needs to be done.. They probably should bring in Boltz or Steel in place of Felps , and at some point if he can't level up they need to consider to drop TACO. He's really been living up to his TACOBOT meme lately..

2017-09-16 22:29
So you are saying winning a map 16-0 and losing the other two 16-14 both its better? Ofc they will have better kills count if they lose 2 close games and win 16-5 one

#135
 |
France StickyRice
On the long run if you can play the 3 maps of the BO3 you have higher chances of winning the BO3 than the team who can be competitive on only 2. Slightly lucky victory for Liquid (maybe they have underperformed a bit, as they easily dominated SK on Greece)
2017-09-16 22:36
That ESG win was SK being pure shit. This win was Liquid defeating an extremely strong SK

Yeah i didn't know if today Liquid was slightly underperforming (vs last time in Greece) or if SK wasn't as bad as they were last week (because SK is slumping so it's hard to say what their real current level is)

I was rooting for Liquid, not SK but it was a bit lucky victory for Liquid (their win on Greece vs SK was much more convincing)
2017-09-16 22:37
Of course 2-0 is more convincing than a 2-1 that has two maps go 30 rounds or more. However, I wouldn't call their win lucky. Liquid played great, and luck goes both ways, in winning and in losing.

Pretty retarded comment imo, so based on your logic Immortals is better than Gambit because they got more round in final of major in BO3??? Even if it would be 16:14, 0:16, 16:14 (32vs44 round in your brain) it still doesn't matter. Liquid 2:1 SK all what matters. If SK lose once vs Liquid ok upset happens everyone makes mistakes even #1 team but Liquid won against them 2 events in row. Liquid> SK PS: All your extra rounds and kills are from Overpass btw. Where Liquid basically just gave up because it's not there map and SK are really good there.
2017-09-16 22:39

 |
France StickyRice
Yeah i know Immortals won one more round than Gambit at the final but a 16-4 9-16 10-16 (don't remember if it was the exact score line of the final but it was something like this if if i remember correctly) game isn't the same than a 16-14 0-16 16-14 because the 16-9 16-10 maps you won weren't super close like the two 16-14 on a 16-14 0-16 16-14 game that you were extremely lucky to win because you could be competitive on 2 maps vs 3 for your opponent, a slight thing not going your way on a 16-14 map and then your opponent wins it.

Not even cold and fallen playing out of their minds could avoid this. SK needs to get rid of felps, he didn't bring anything that the team didn't have before, and his playstyle just gets eclipsed by fer (which is so much better than him). Liquid on the other hand improved so much. They finally look like they got things figured out.

Taco at least got his own role. Atm their level is arguably the same, but felps just doesn't fit anywhere imo

Coldzera trying to hard carry SK to the final. If it wasn't for him, SK would be tier 2. Seriously, get rid of Botaco already (+boltz) and bring back coach zews.

CSGO scene would've been different had liquid won vs sk in MLG colombus and cologne 2016.

They'd be two time Major winners who fell the fuck off and will still be remembered for getting carried by s1mple

Liquid is sooo amazing recently, beat 2 tier1 teams, nice job
2017-09-16 22:42
Can't believe SK threw this match so hard... Now they can regret their two consecutive half buys on Cobble's CT side. Also felps and TACO couldn't defend B to save their lives.. Time for SK to ask themselves some question when they can't win despite their 3 star players putting 1.25+ ratings during the BO3 ...
2017-09-16 22:43
Nice game, feels bad for SK but what a serie :O. Congratz Liquid !

this team liquid with addition of twistz and stan is incredible. Best of luck to them. SK have looked rusty. It is clear that the coordination and their confidence is not there at the moment. I still believe SK and even Astralis have that discipline to come back from this.

I agree with you, I think both teams (Ast and SK) can come back. After vacation they didn't have enough time to practice imo. By the way team Liquid is playing very well and they deserve respect. I would like to see more teams playing very well in NA region so it will be more interesting to watch the tournaments.

I realized that SK/LG don't win tournaments if FalleN don't hit his shots. He gotta connect those crazy flicks and close range shots... if he play just like a 'normal' sniper, SK always fail. Every time SK won a tournament, we saw FalleN being a beast. coldzera alone can't carry them to trophies.

Liquid is a good team in this whole time, they bootcamped, they trained, and deserve to be on finals! I have to say, in actually, liquid is the best team of NA, and deserves to be on Top 5 or Top 10 on HLTV. Proud of my team lost to a very good team Liquid. Coldzera played so well, but, liquid is on a very very good day. epicenter is of SK! #RUNSKG EDIT : -TACO +boltz or lucas1
