FaZe beat Liquid to win ESL One New York

MIRAA
September 17th, 2017 22:50

FaZe have won the 2017 edition of ESL One New York following a 3-0 clean sweep of Team Liquid in the final.

The first map of the series, Inferno, began with a great retake from FaZe in the pistol round as Finn "karrigan" Andersen and Nikola "NiKo" Kovač turned a tricky 2v3 afterplant in their favor. After losing an eco round, Liquid went for a risky buy, only to get overrun while entering the B site, which left their economy in shambles.

Regardless of what they did, Liquid simply could not find a way to break through the Europeans' stern defense. At 0-12, Liquid came close to getting a round on the board after finding an opening in B, only to get shut down by NiKo, who picked up a quad-kill. FaZe would go on to win the remaining two rounds of the half to secure a perfect 15-0 lead.

After drawing blanks for the entire first half, Liquid finally managed to win a round by stomping FaZe in the banana. FaZe almost locked down the map in the third round as Olof "olofmeister" Kajbjer picked up an ace, but the last kill came after the defuse had been completed. The finishing blow from the Europeans came in the following round, as karrigan picked up three kills in the A site to give his team a comfortable victory.

FaZe win first title with the new roster

Jonathan "EliGE" Jablonowski opened up Overpass, FaZe's map pick, by picking up three quick kills in the upper park, putting Liquid in the lead of the first time in the series. The following two rounds also went Liquid's way, but FaZe came fighting back in the first gun round with a sensational quad kill from NiKo in the B site.

FaZe kept pressing on and eventually took the lead at 4-3. Liquid then fought back, thanks to two key frags from Peter "stanislaw" Jarguz in a flank push, but they could not follow it up as FaZe regained control of the game - only taking their foot off the pedal once they closed out the half with an 11-4 lead.

The European team added to their lead by taking the pistol round with four quick kills from Håvard "rain" Nygaard in the upper park. Liquid rallied back with a third-round buy, which caught the Europeans off-guard and brought chaos to their economy.

The rounds that FaZe were able to get after that were few and far between, and even though they reached map point at 15-10, they just could not close the map out. Inch by inch, Liquid closed the gap between themselves and their opponents, but then they shockingly fell at the final hurdle, against a FaZe side on a shoddy buy.

Liquid were no match for FaZe on Inferno and Mirage

Mirage began with FaZe getting out to a quick 3-0 lead on the CT side. After buying up, Liquid picked up two rounds in a row with B executions, the second of which courtesy of a 1v2 clutch from Russel "Twistzz" Van Dulken.

That was the only time that Liquid were able to string rounds together in this half. With the North Americans struggling to break through FaZe's defense, they had to rely on moments of true individual brilliance to get something going. Two key frags from Twistzz in a 2v2 situation and a 1v2 clutch from EliGE still gave Liquid's fans some hopes, but as the half came to an end the North American team knew they had a mountain to climb to turn the game around.

After losing the pistol round, Liquid nearly pulled off an eco win, but rain came up huge and clutched a 1v3 situation. The first full gun round would also go FaZe's way, leaving Liquid with no money in the bank to prevent the Europeans from finishing the match in style on their first opportunity.

It was expected though, he's total garbage 99% of the time. If liquid fans weren't totally delusional they'd see that Liquid needs an actual awper that hits shots in everyday matches. Even a guy like Shahzam would be a massive improvement.
2017-09-18 09:05
I dunno man shahzam is a decent awper but he seems to not play coordinated with team so well. Maybe JDM and Stan for ska and Tim would be interesting

Yeah they rather throw and lost vs Liquid so it looks like it was just lucky upset than facing Faze in final and getting raped so everyone know they are not #1 like hltv is trying to say cough cough BR owners BR sponzors cough cough. Calling it now take a screenshot SK will be still listed as #1 at the end of 2018 with 0 won tournaments. "BECAUSE IT'S ABOUT CONSISTENCY" :DDD Yeah being consistent in getting raped in quater or semi finals xD.

Beating two NA teams in a bo3 isn't really that impressive, although they played awesome cs at this tournament. Then again, they could've won this easily with allu and kio, no doubt about that. Im not convinced with this lineup until they win bo3's against: SK (in terrible form currently but they'll bounce back eventually) G2 (atm they might be ahead of faze, time will show) Astralis (pretty much in a slump atm but I bet a match between these two would be pretty even)
2017-09-17 23:04
I believe that any of the teams you quoted would lose the final against FAZE today. It's so good to see guardian playing well. What to talk about the NIKO? He's a monster. I also want to see this FAZE against G2 or SK at its best. Congratulations Faze.

G2 ahead of faze ever lmao nt
2017-09-17 23:23
lmao when has G2 ever beaten FaZe on LAN in Bo3? also Astralis? they couldn't win when FaZe has allu and Kio, what makes you think they could beat them now? they got destroyed in the groups. atleast try to use your little brain however tiny it might be
2017-09-18 22:34
Zews is the greatest coach but he's not a magician.
2017-09-17 23:04
And SK don't care too much about ESL New York.
2017-09-17 23:05
SK era is done, the sooner you realize that the better
2017-09-17 23:08
There'll be no FaZe era, the sooner you realize that the better.

Nah. Cologne and the major final were worse than this.
2017-09-18 00:39
What major? Krakow? Hell no, that final was awesome, it went all three maps and they were all close, with great clutches and plays. Also in Cologne at least Cloud9 put up some fight. This was a great final if you like seeing americans get slaughtered. Really disappointed by TL performance, was expecting more.

2017-09-17 23:22
It's ESL One Cologne 2016 all over again. They come from the bottom and take down some huge names. Then they eat shit in the finals. I'm still confident and proud of the progress they made. They lost handily but they took down Astralis, SK, and their own personal demon Virtus.pro. That's a good tournament if you ask me. Next up is ELEAGUE. I'm sure they'll blow peoples minds there too! Let's get it! #TLWIN #TLGO #LETSGOLIQUID

Did u watch Cologne 2016?Two different perfomances cuz in Cologne they had a 100% chances to win but unfortunately they've became chokevid. Now they just got brutally rekt by Faze!
2017-09-18 02:05
?? In Cologne they got straight bodied just like they did here. Except to a lesser degree. They lost 8-16 and 7-16. That's not a choke. That's SK being the better team. Same for FaZe. Props to them
2017-09-18 14:43
I admit that this is pretty much superstar team. Still -30 is not acceptable, especially not from jdm.

GGWP to both teams. FaZe looks really scary when all the players are clicking, they can literally destroy any team. The other aspect that's gonna play a role now is - consistency. Hope they can keep up this form, if so, they will be top 1 by the end of the year no doubts.

GG for them. They are way too good. Expecting top2/top1 if they beat G2 with this roster. This win still has a salty taste : I feel like it was way too easy. 4 star player team -> domination. If there is a domination, there won't be any real show, with matches full of tension and surprise. i'm not the kind of person to be a glory fan and to follow a team in which they're sure they will be able to win. I will always cheer for the underdog/crowd team. I would have personally loved to see a fourth map if Liquid had won second map. Sad for them, sad this tournament passed so fast. I was starting to really enjoy it.

IGL Choke. Teammates die no re-frag because everyone didn't had a good rest and then braindead at the stage and then choke.
