FaZe have won the 2017 edition of ESL One New York following a 3-0 clean sweep of Team Liquid in the final.
The first map of the series, Inferno, began with a great retake from FaZe in the pistol round as Finn "karrigan" Andersen and Nikola "NiKo" Kovač turned a tricky 2v3 afterplant in their favor. After losing an eco round, Liquid went for a risky buy, only to get overrun while entering the B site, which left their economy in shambles.
Regardless of what they did, Liquid simply could not find a way to break through the Europeans' stern defense. At 0-12, Liquid came close to getting a round on the board after finding an opening in B, only to get shut down by NiKo, who picked up a quad-kill. FaZe would go on to win the remaining two rounds of the half to secure a perfect 15-0 lead.
After drawing blanks for the entire first half, Liquid finally managed to win a round by stomping FaZe in the banana. FaZe almost locked down the map in the third round as Olof "olofmeister" Kajbjer picked up an ace, but the last kill came after the defuse had been completed. The finishing blow from the Europeans came in the following round, as karrigan picked up three kills in the A site to give his team a comfortable victory.
Jonathan "EliGE" Jablonowski opened up Overpass, FaZe's map pick, by picking up three quick kills in the upper park, putting Liquid in the lead of the first time in the series. The following two rounds also went Liquid's way, but FaZe came fighting back in the first gun round with a sensational quad kill from NiKo in the B site.
FaZe kept pressing on and eventually took the lead at 4-3. Liquid then fought back, thanks to two key frags from Peter "stanislaw" Jarguz in a flank push, but they could not follow it up as FaZe regained control of the game - only taking their foot off the pedal once they closed out the half with an 11-4 lead.
The European team added to their lead by taking the pistol round with four quick kills from Håvard "rain" Nygaard in the upper park. Liquid rallied back with a third-round buy, which caught the Europeans off-guard and brought chaos to their economy.
The rounds that FaZe were able to get after that were few and far between, and even though they reached map point at 15-10, they just could not close the map out. Inch by inch, Liquid closed the gap between themselves and their opponents, but then they shockingly fell at the final hurdle, against a FaZe side on a shoddy buy.
Mirage began with FaZe getting out to a quick 3-0 lead on the CT side. After buying up, Liquid picked up two rounds in a row with B executions, the second of which courtesy of a 1v2 clutch from Russel "Twistzz" Van Dulken.
That was the only time that Liquid were able to string rounds together in this half. With the North Americans struggling to break through FaZe's defense, they had to rely on moments of true individual brilliance to get something going. Two key frags from Twistzz in a 2v2 situation and a 1v2 clutch from EliGE still gave Liquid's fans some hopes, but as the half came to an end the North American team knew they had a mountain to climb to turn the game around.
After losing the pistol round, Liquid nearly pulled off an eco win, but rain came up huge and clutched a 1v3 situation. The first full gun round would also go FaZe's way, leaving Liquid with no money in the bank to prevent the Europeans from finishing the match in style on their first opportunity.
