NiKo: "We're going to try to win every event possible, now we have everything to do that"

September 17th, 2017 23:29

ESL One New York's Most Valuable Player, Nikola "NiKo" Kovač, gave us an interview about FaZe's dominant run at the $250,000 event.

FaZe have become victorious at ESL One New York, continuing their dominant run in the grand final, where they defeated Liquid 3-0, with two of the maps ending up in landslides.

FaZe have used all the time they could to practice in between events

After the grand final, we got a hold of the MVP, Nikola "NiKo" Kovač, to quiz him about FaZe's first title with their new lineup:

Such a dominant run throughout the tournament, even in the final, just one of the maps was close. Did you expect to come into this so strong?

Yeah, we expected to come here strong, but we didn't expect that we're going to have results like this. We worked a lot since Malmö, we used almost every possible day to practice, which we had, and we improved our game by far. So I'm really happy that we managed to improve our game in such a short time, we were going from event to event for three weeks in a row, so I'm really happy that managed to find our game.

In ELEAGUE, we talked a lot, also in Malmö, right after we lost, we went to practice and... the loss against Gambit, it was not supposed to be a loss, because we lost four anti-ecos in the last map, so it's kind of hard to say that we deserved to lose in the group stage. In ELEAGUE, we used like four days or five to practice, even when we had matches, officials, we practiced before and after. And that helped us a lot, we just talked, worked basically on our communication and our teamplay.

Now that you've played those couple of tournaments, do you feel like you've figured out the roles, considering the changes brought you such a stacked, playmaking team?

Yeah, I think that everyone has their role in the team now. It's not set roles, but everyone knows which role he should take in a certain round. We have five all-round players who can do everything, so that helps us a lot in terms of roles, so it doesn't really matter if we didn't set the roles, we're just versatile players, so it's pretty easy to do the things to win the map.

Would you compare yourselves to the old fnatic in that sense?

Yeah, exactly, I think it's pretty much the same, you have every player who can do anything in the team to win the round. They know what should be done to win the round, so I think we are similar to fnatic at the moment, I hope (laughs).

With the previous lineup, just after you joined, you had a good period but only won one of the tournaments, what will be different this time? Now you've won a tournament as well, how do you keep it up?

We're going to try to win every event possible, I think now we have everything that is needed to do that, so it's just up to us to put the time and to work as a team, I think.

Yeah but this FaZe team has 1. Top 2 IGL in the world (Kar) 2. Top 3 (maybe 5 to the haters) AWP in the world (Guard) 3. Former best player in the world (Olof) 4. Arguably current best player in the world (Niko) 5. Arguably best clutcher in the world (Rain) Other than bad performances what is holding them back?

I think SK def had an era. They won both majors in 2016, had the top 1 and 2 ranked players for the year on HLTV, and won many other events and even have carried some of that over into 2017 though they failed to win a major this year. 2016 was the year of SK though (though they were LG the first part of the year).

While I agree that SK are an extremely accomplished team, they haven't had an era. I think most people would define an era as a team completely dominating the scene. SK won a major, and then another major, but with nothing significant in between. Then this summer they strung together a couple tourneys but not enough to call it total domination. I have unending respect for Fallen and his boys, but I can't say they've ever had an era.

I didn't. I don't believe Astralis had an era. They did really good for about 4 months but only had a couple titles and really haven't done too much since. Whereas, NIP dominated for over a year and had many titles, Fnatic also had a good 18 month stretch where they took 2 majors (I know they have 3 total but the first was during the NIP era) and tons of other titles. Then SK (Their era began as LG when they won their first major) who won both majors of 2016 and has still continued to be one the best overall teams in the world. Technically the SK era hasn't really ended officially because they are still considered a threat to take any title and there is no team who is clearly better than them. And let's be honest, SK would have pushed FaZe much harder than Liquid did in the final yesterday. Liquid aren't quite ready for the big time yet. I'm convinced we are about to see the start of a new dominant team in FaZe. I've never seen a team dominate a LAN the way FaZe did ESL NY. I can't wait to see how the next big events go. FaZe has me excited about pro cs again. I was starting to get very bored with it. I didn't even watch most of the matches at the last major and I used to not even miss online matches if i could help it.
