Odense and ESL to host several events in forthcoming years

Warming up for the ESL Pro League Finals, which are due to kick off next week in the city of Odense, HLTV caught up with some of the key individuals who brought such an event to the home of H. C. Andersen.

Heavily invested in the field of technology, including a growing robotics sector, the city of Odense found in ESL the perfect company to promote itself as an event city driven by the experience economy, and at the same time attract a demographic that would eventually be attracted to move to the city to work in its growing technology sector.

The Arena Fyn will host the Pro League Finals in front of thousands of fans

One of the key aspects of the deal was the opportunity to have ESL host events in the city on a regular basis. As Ronnie Hansen, a consultant to the city of Odense, puts it, they did not want a "grasshopper" event— one that comes once and takes the money with it.

The contract signed between ESL and Odense is, therefore, a three-year deal which will start with this upcoming Pro League but is not limited to it in the future, meaning other ESL brands could land in the city to host events with similar prize pools.

Check out the video, in which Odense's Mayor, Peter Rahbaek Juel, Councilwoman Jane Jegind, and consultant Ronnie Hansen talk about the city that will host the upcoming ESL Pro League Finals.

2017-11-30 13:01
It's a small city. It can never be called huge, even if you go by danish standard, because you actually have a big city. But that's it. Also you saying that it's big for being in Denmark is totally irrelevant to what I said. I replied to someone who was talking about the mayor wasting time on small stuff like an esport event and I answered that question.

Well, Blast made 1/2 of their budget from public funds. (And still they made a net loss in the end). Its obvious, that when you want to make money of events, and thats what ESL wants, you need to cut corners and in the past they often enough cut corners at the production. But this years IEMs and ESL Ones have been better then the last 2 years and maybe they learned (and found new sources of income to allocate more $$$ to production)

Sweden 4Sweeeden
Nice. Glad seeing more EU events, and especially really close to Sweden so its simple for Swedes to just drive over the bridge and be at Odense in 1½-2 hours (depends on where you live ofc, but for people living in south Sweden its easy)
2017-11-29 19:47
Lucky. US events usually happen hours and hours away. ESL New York and Eleague Major Boston are the closest to me but it takes 2 hours to get to Boston and 3.5 hours to get to New York :C
2017-11-29 20:04
For reals? Shouldn't take that long to get here in Boston if you live in a state near MA unless well idk, although the main problem for NA events are when they start cause of timezones
2017-11-29 20:42
I live in Connecticut and it takes minimum 1.5 hours to get to Boston MA

Yeah but they should get a tournament here
2017-11-30 22:45
people would be against it unless they can do something about the schedules or timezones

No but for an event I think quite a lot of people does. Takes like an hour with train from Copenhagen and not much longer from the border. People are no lifers cause they attend an event with something they enjoy? Ok then

2017-11-29 21:05
what is the point of putting it on a city so accessible when the arena can handle 5k people at full capacity and probably around 2.5kmax in the stage setup pattern that CSGO uses?
2017-11-29 22:02
Because currently it's the largest that Odense has for such an event, excluding EWII Park (Football stadium). I don't know if EWII Park would be able to be remade so it could hold such an event or if the organization behind is even interested in doing so.
2017-11-30 00:47
thing is that theres no point in doing the event in a accessible city if theres not enough tickers for every interested people to go. why not just host in copenhagen? if not they could at least try to get the football stadium to work then, 2.5k people on a event feels retarded tbh.
2017-11-30 00:58
refrezh |
Denmark Sthus
Because the event is made in a collaboration with Odense city, who is trying to attract new talent to study or/and work in the area. This wouldn have the same effect for Odense (located on Fyn), if the event took place in Copenhagen (Zealand). I totally agree with you that the venue looks a bit too small, taking the popularity of Blast in mind.
2017-11-30 09:08
Why would Odense spend man power and money to host events in Copenhagen? That would be up to Copenhagen to invest themselves. Also where do you get 2,5k from? The arena itself says it can hold 5k people? Well first and foremost the team who owns the stadium has a home game in that period. Secondly it's a pretty old stadium and I'm certain making it useful for an event such as this would be pretty expensive fora on. I don't see why either would spend that much money on a one time thing.
2017-11-30 11:13

Since that EPL didn't sell out untill today, i'd say that the venue capacity is just fine.

ESL should hold on to Denmark. They should have done the agreement with Copenhagen tho. Then they could just use Royal Arena, jyske bank boxen. Or the beautiful theatre. And it would still be easy for Danes/Swedish/Norwegian, even some germans to come. This Arena just looks old and shit. But lets see what they can do
