sergej announces break from gaming

HAVU star Jere "sergej" Salo has decided to take an undefined break from competitive gaming, the Finnish team has announced.

In a short statement, HAVU cite "personal reasons and lack of motivation" as the reasons for the 15-year-old to step down from the roster for an indefinite period of time, and described the decision as "a big setback" for the team and the organisation.

Jere "sergej" Salo has been part of HAVU since June, when he replaced Taneli "disturbed" Veikkola on the roster after rising through the ranks of the Finnish scene.

sergej steps down from HAVU's roster

With sergej on the roster, HAVU won a number of domestic tournaments including NeSA, the ESPORTSM.fi Finals and the Nordic Championship Season 1, and attended the SL i-League Invitational #2 and the IeSF World Championship. The 15-year-old has been in great form throughout the year, averaging an impressive 1.25 Rating on LAN.

HAVU's squad has now been depleted to just four players, with the Finnish organisation due to announce a stand-in "shortly", it has been announced. The team currently has:

Finland Jesse "KHRN" Grandell
Finland Mikko "xartE" Välimaa
Finland Aleksi "Aleksib" Virolainen
Finland Otto "ottoNd" Sihvo (trial)

Finland Taneli "disturbed" Veikkola (backup)

2017-12-28 03:11
Putting a realistic career on hold doesn't make sense though. For however much is coming into CSGO monetarily, none of you understand that it's a bubble. In much the same way any other sport is a bubble, and you need contingency. In fact, the security is worse with CSGO because the payouts, while finally decent, aren't going to keep you floating the rest of your life. So yeah, Ropz is making good money, but he's not making the kind of money that will define the rest of his life.
2017-12-27 20:08
other sports are not in the csgo "case". You can only get a permanent trauma and then you're fucked. Rn valve can do some bs and ruin the game. Orgs can leave csgo. Imagine team like liquid saying fuck you to csgo. Twist does not even have a highschool diploma, I dont think he could even get a job at mcd.
2017-12-27 21:08
That's essentially my point.
2017-12-28 02:39
CS has been around for almost 20 years in different versions. Im pretty sure it wont just die off in the coming 5-10 years. The CS pros on the level that ropz are on and that sergej could get to make hundreds of thousands of dollars a year. And if he gets tired of the game or it against all odds dies off in the coming years he can still get a degree afterwards, life isnt over just because he decided to make a shit ton of money in his teen years.
2017-12-27 22:19
CS being around for 20 years is irrelevant to my point, because the economic value of actually being a pro has only really existed in this space for a brief amount of time (hence it being a bubble). Hundreds of thousands of dollars is not an amount that will get you through the rest of your life, and that's assuming you make that over a long period of time (which is rarely the case in CS:GO). Also, since you obviously aren't there yet I'll tell you something: the older you are when you start looking at real career paths, the harder it is to get a job. Contingency is a hell of a lot more intelligent than hedging bets on something that may lose its viability in 5 - 10 years.
2017-12-28 02:42
>Hundreds of thousands of dollars is not an amount that will get you through the rest of your life Depends where. If you're from second world country you can do that. I believe players from SK and virtus.pro made so much money so far they can live in their countries comfortably for another at least 20 years if they quited gaming today. For example liquidpedia says FalleN has made around $700k just from prize money, thats without salaries, sticker money and who knows what more. Even if he has spent some of it with the rest I believe he can live in Brazil like a king for decades...
2017-12-28 14:28
$700k is not really enough to live like a King in most parts of the world, at least not for 50 years. You have to take into consideration things like inflation and duration. Had he made $3 or $4 million, sure, I could agree he could turn that into more. For now, he's made a VERY good living, but it's not one that will carry him through the rest of his life without some really adept financial decisions.
2017-12-28 21:07
It' not necessarily a bubble because it's only been brief. It could very well keep evolving into something even bigger (in fact alot of factors are pointing at it). Thanks for the insult, I own my own company with a revenue of 1.5 million euro a year, Im at 31 now and started the company 4 years ago at 27. So obviously a young pro players economic life isnt over just because he decides to play for a couple of years (some pros like Neo and f0rest have been pros and making a living of cs for over 15 years). Being an ex pro player also opens up alot of other job oppertunities like casting, streaming, working in organisations and with sponsors.
2017-12-28 15:56
How much of your revenue is pure profit, because revenue means shit if your overhead is barely covered, and if you've started your own business you should know this (I'm sorry, I've been in a small business since 2012 and I'm 36, please tell me how this all works since I'm clearly unaware). It's a bubble because it's not currently a realistically stable environment from which to make money. Just about anyone who has a grasp on money and basic economics should understand this, and if you run your own business you should understand this too. I'm not saying that esports will just collapse, but it's not something to base your entire life off of. Also, most people won't have the economic ability to just start their own company, and without a reasonable understanding of what they're doing likely couldn't manage one either (since most small businesses fail in, what, the first 5 years?). Most people aren't going to go the path of starting a business, they're going to look to already established businesses for a career. Being an ex-pro can open up opportunities, you're not incorrect. It's about what kinds of opportunities those are, of course. I'm sure cArn's made a pretty good living with fnatic, and BSL seems to be doing well himself these days. The point is you should always have a contingency plan, and looking at something like money you're bringing in currently is not a good way to do that. If he thinks he'd be better suited getting a job instead of going the pro path, well, I can't say I disagree that it's probably a more sound decision (since most of your examples are extreme outliers, how many players last as long as Neo or f0rest...).
2017-12-28 21:14
We have a 10% profit margin, 3 years straight, growing with 30% 2017. Not a stable environment to make money? That could be said about anything if your bad at it, were talking about one of the biggest prospects in one of the biggest e-sports in the world. It's highly likely that he will make money and lots of it if he pursuit a pro career. I just said he can start other career paths after a potential CS career, so not sure why you point out it might not be possible to live/base your whole life off of it. It's irrelevant as it is with many careers now a days when times are a changing and lots of jobs stops existing as we know them. Hes 15 years old, why not take the chance of a lifetime and live as a pro for a while (if thats what he really wants)? Theres also the possebility that e-sports keeps growing and can make him a very rich man. It's not like he cant pick up school or further education afterwards to find a more ordinary career (if thats what he wants).
2017-12-28 21:30
Look, here's my point and why I said what I did: You can't replace an education, because that shit is pretty important in your life. That said, the growth of CSGO has been exponential, but it's beginning to plateau, the game is only 5 years old. Very few pro players will exist as a high-salary asset for more than a few years, which while I'm happy that it's finally become a viable living solution it's a poor life choice still (for any number of economic and health-related reasons). Honestly at 15, no matter how good he is, he really should focus on getting his fundamentals out of the way when it comes to education. The argument really should be that, if he's that talented, he will be just as good at 18 as he is at 15 (if not better), but he can't replace those formative years and social interactions in the same ways. Some people thrive like that, obviously, but I think it's irresponsible to say that because you make a good paycheck that you shouldn't think about what the future holds. It's something all of us need to pursue, and something plenty of younger people don't really understand. Like, I have a cousin who sold upwards of $500k in art a year in the early 2000's (before the economy tanked), but now he's hardly surviving on his paychecks. It's just one of those things, no matter how much money you're bringing in you want to have a back up plan.
2017-12-28 21:42
I agree that education is key and maybe it's a better option to stay semi until hes 18 and then go pro for aslong as he wants or can depending on what happens first. You can also read up afterwards so both are probably viable options for him depending on what he wants himself.
2017-12-28 21:53

Depends on a path. I know for a fact I would fail trying to go mechanical engineering + CS pro, even at 15 studying would go downhill. Unless you can have no social life whatsoever: compete, travel, then study extra when everyone is chilling, and be a robot to perform in both areas and not break. Though later (after 15) it gets harder, true that
2017-12-27 17:35
Sergej has avarage of 9.4 (from 4 to 10 rating) which is very crazy for a 15 years old teen boy in Finland.

For 3-5-10-whatever years before the game dies (no guarantees), or the money bubble blows, or he takes a break for another reason (like tenzki; competitive gaming path can be mentally draining; or no team to fit into, or whatever) or simply finishes his career come 30 - at which point (if the game is still alive and he makes it so far) he has no good options other than continue working in a gaming industry, which in case of its success will be overpopulated with candidates in the same position by that time (there was room for people like Spunj, YNk and HenryG to almost walk in because the industry rose during the time they were already putting themselves out there, they were the first wave of ex-pro players who took a realistic opportunity to continue working full-time in the industry. 15 years later, the industry won't be able to accomodate everyone who would choose this path. Same with managers, coaches, whatever related to it). Guy should definitely finish school, especially if he goes to a decent school and has high ambitions and not just attending school "just because I have to" or whatever. It's a complicated topic though, especially not knowing the situation. edit. If he hates studying and his parents pressured him to make this statement because he "doesn't do homework" and CS is his only passion, he should do "an electronic" and go f.u. parents, go live alone, pay his bills with a side-job and CS winnings and make a career. The whole thing with independance is hard to pull off at 15 though (you have very limited options)
2017-12-27 17:23

2017-12-27 16:56
Well, if he have no grill and had a crush - absolutely possible. Most of the EU people cant "just take her and fak her", like you, south country people. But i think it is dumb parents, who dont and dont wanna understand anything in that regard. Probably 50yo old farts, who just used to what they doing and cant learn anything new.
2017-12-28 01:30
yeah its not that uncommon
2017-12-27 19:06
Its a lot more common than you think. I think the stat was something like 1/4 teenagers are at risk of developing it.

Such a weird decision, but he might have some strong reasons of that.
2017-12-27 15:58
Reason being the same every time in Finland. The kid is carrying the team, he is the star player but the team struggles. He loses motivation because Finns don't have what it takes to grind out years to become something. Sunny is one of the very few from Finland that actually are willing to put the work in that it takes, and now he's somewhere. Sergej would be the same, but it requires that you work for it, and not quite when something doesn't magically fall for you.
2017-12-27 16:02
also with 15yo you probably dont think that way or you arent that far mental wise yet. I mean he plays Cs on a daily basis shit gets boring real quick during your teenage years
2017-12-27 16:32
well i played 5 years of metin2, 2 years of bf3 and now 5 years of csgo. Shit doesnt necessarily get boring in teenage years :D

Being really good at something doesn't mean you'll have motivation for it, even if it's something you want, you don't know what's going on through his life. Personal experience. There's a lot of things that can screw you up, probably depression but he might want other thing as well
2017-12-27 16:22
indeed, like Kumar said in Harold and Kumar: "Just because you're hung like a moose doesn't mean you have to do porn". btw i was kinda in sergej's position and decided i wanted to party, do drugs, and have freedom to do what i want without having to play cs every day.

I wonder if HAVUs latest mixed results were because of sergejs lack of motivation or the other way around.
2017-12-27 16:09
Do you mean that sergej’s latest mixed results were because of HAVU’s lack of motivation? Or that HAVU’s latest motivation was because of sergej’s lack of mixed results?
2017-12-27 16:17
Timeline is probably something like, the really bad run in the asia tournaments, sergej loses motivation, team loses motivation because of that, sergej quits. The kid just doesn't understand that you need to grind to get better. Do the work, and people would have signed him to a top teams once he's a bit older. But nope, standard Finnish thing kicks in, and he doesn't want to make the effort to get to the top.
2017-12-27 16:31
Maybe he just didn’t want to do it? Embarking on a life of pro gaming is not a decision that should be taken lightly.

What is the point in losing your teenage years to a video game while you could be out with your friends having fun, getting drunk and laid. All while you could still get an education that guarantees you a salary larger than what you would get from being a professional in gaming. As a northern European male you have to make at least 6000€/month from playing to make it remotely worthwhile financially.

Good decision. HAVU has nothing to offer to him, because he is the one carrying almost every game and they still can't win shit and they are not even playing against tier 2 opponents. I think he will now focus on FPL and school ofc. Hopefully in a year or two he gets signed in to an international organization. (If CSGO still exists)
2017-12-27 19:13
Is he taking a break from CSGO or playing for HAVU? He might have something better in the works, if he's doing it because he isn't motivated, then screw him.

15 years old, able to travel the world to play a fucking video game, get featured as a 'future star' on the most important site in the world about CS... and suffer from "lack of motivation"!?? To hell with him! He has the mind of a loser. Fortunately, he's so young that he can stop for even two or three years and come back.

who said that this game wont die in about 2 years from now on ? I dont say it would, im saying that its possible
2017-12-27 20:13
No it's really not possible. A 15 yo esport that's bigger than it has ever been is not going to die in 2 years. Though he might be missing his personal window to get as good as he could get. Even if he's going to keep playing FPL during his break, he's going to need to relearn a lot of things if the break is longer than half a year to a year.

The case for mental coaching I have been part of or following the Finnish Counter-Strike-scene for 17 years now. I have noticed that a common thing for Finnish players has been a lack of patience resulting in a lack of motivation and ultimately to a decision to quit playing. This sad and surprising decision of Jere “sergej” Salo gave me an inspiration to write a case for mental coaching. Do you remember the tweet “I am not going to give up before I win a motherf***ng major.” by Danylo “Zeus” Teslenko? Then he gets kicked out of Na`Vi, joins a new team, and wins the major. That, my friends, is patience. What a story. Now Jere “sergej” Salo, a 15-year-old super-prospect possibly transfers into a could-have-been-a-superstar. Why? Lack of motivation? Because of WoW? How about the mental strength to be patient? People seem to want to be successful without the patience to do the grinding that it requires. Imagine a young player like sergej having someone coaching him mentally so well that even after big disappointments when the doubts start to creep in, he would become even more motivated than before. If you have that, holy sh** you are dangerous. By the way: I can tell by experience that the more you have to wait to win, the better it feels. I don't believe you will answer this, but still, I have to ask: If you were guaranteed that you would be playing for the best team in the world in five years, would you still take a break?
