ESEA adds age restriction to MDL rules

ESEA has added a minimum age requirement of 16 for the MDL Season 27, making many rising talents ineligible to compete in the league.

With registration for ESEA S27 already open, an updated tournament rulebook now mentions that "players under the age of sixteen (16) years old cannot compete in the MDL divisions", either in Europe or in North America.

This new rule impacts many young talents who have been competing in MDL, including eXtatus' David "frozen" Čerňanský, Fragsters' Martin "stavn" Lund, Ghost Academy's Jason "neptune" Tran and SoaR's Ryan "Snakes" Amann.

frozen unable to play in MDL under the new rules

On Twitter, ESEA Product Manager Brett "Few" Sheffield mentioned that more information about the rule changes for Season 27 will be announced soon and stressed that it will not affect the S26 Global Challenge event, where both neptune and Snakes will be in attendance.

Yes? Exactly....if U16 players are on pro teams, ESEA is halting that, by not letting them play. If every league and tournament did this then it'd greatly destroy the infrastructure of the cs scene as no younger talents can get higher tier experience. This rule brings about nothing good

Yeah, sure... they were not picked by Faze or SK instantly, Extatus, Godsent, ...those are T2 teams now. And thanks to ESL, ESEA, Eleague age restrictions they aren´t (and won´t be) able to even participate in qualifiers for big events.... Maybe that is the reason why you don´t see them on T1 tournaments ;) - they simply have to wait until they are old enough to even try to prove themselves

Good rules. Broodwars youngest player on TV was 12 years old (TY) and thats not a situation you want to happen in CS:GO. The game tied to child labor and exploitation discussions. All major sports have an age restriction for professional athlets and this restriction is usually 16 or 18 years old. Nobodies carriers are taken away, they just have to grow up without being forced to train dozens of hours per week till they are 16. With the amount of professional teams in MDL, thats a good rule. And playing under 16 at events like MDL is even illegal in alot of countries. For example, under 16 year olds are not allowed to work in Germany after 22.00. They also are not allowed to "work" for more then 6-8 hours a day. Its a legal issue. Ask the UN Child protection intiatives about it.
2018-01-03 18:58
14 replies
And dont come up with children in movies: These are highly regulated branches, where the gouvernment sets a ton of papers that parents and gouvernment youth agencies have to sign all shit. In the end even these children often times are not allowed to stand infront of a camera for more then 4 hours a day or even less. Child labor and exploitation is a serious topic and ESEA just wants to protect themself from the shit ton of legal issues that come with under 16 year olds at your events. And where is the boarder? TY was 12 at his first match on TV, will we see 12 year olds in CS:GO on LANs? Is this good?

I also know these people. My school was the partner school of a german bundesliga club. They went to our school, missed half the time due to playing with the DFB teams or with the club and teachers traveled with them to help them get education. This is highly regulated in Germany, the clubs need to forster education of their young players, need to agree not training more then X hours per day and week and so on. ESL or ESEA cant do that shit. Hell most CS:GO teams cant garantee to do this. Also even when these 15yo call it pro football, its likely they dont have a pro contract. Being at a professional football team as a youth player does not make you a professional till you got the pro contract.

2018-01-03 19:25
Contract =|= pro contract There is a large difference between the professional contract that regular A team players have and what younglings in underage teams have. And yeah, I just had to read your freaking legal code: Working in Slovakia is mostly forbidden under the age of 15. (Only so called "light work" is allowed and must be talked through with gouvernment agency, school education must be garanteed) Above 15 you are allowed to work as you want. So yes, your "people" might have a professional contract. But for example thats not possible in Germany under the age of 16. And ESL is a german organisation.
2018-01-03 19:26

there is no difference, and ESEA is based in USA
2018-01-03 19:32

Now 2 people tell you there is. And US laws are sometimes even stricter. Remember Twist not being allowed to play for ELEAGUE back then? Well you are not allowed to work in Georgia, when you are under 17.

idc what 2 people tell me, explain to me how are they different things and give reliable source or gtfo pro athlete is not work, and esport players are treated as athletes by US government
2018-01-03 19:43
3 replies
And then why was Twistz not allowed to play? Because verg11 is smarter then the gouvernment from Georgia and Turner? Contracts: fifa.com/mm/document/affederation/admini.. Read. You are only a professional and have a procontract, when "A professional is a player who has a written contract with a club and is paid more for his footballing activity than the expenses he effectively incurs. All other players are considered to be amateurs." The contracts of 15 year olds are usually never high enough to make them "pro contracts". For example in UK the youth contracts are regulated to certain amounts of money ( playerscout.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/201..) and thats never exeeding the amount to become a pro contract.

There is no such a thing as contract and pro contract. Did you eve read the damn thing? There is only one kind of contracts and the thing is just that fifa takes you as a pro or not, but there is no difference between the two but a price they are being payed. tl;dr Professional contract just means you are payed more.

Why put an age restriction on a developmental league? Sucks enough for these young kids that they can't attend a lot of major events but now that they can't even play in MDL what else is there for them? This will seriously hurt the CS scene as a whole, and I think especially NA. Lots of younger kids that have the passion, dedication and skill to rise above the has-beens still in circulation in many scenes and now they have little to no way to prove their worth. Hopefully this will be changed, and if not I'm really sorry for kids like frozen and neptune.

Wtf that’s so retarded. MDL is meant to help rising talents show their skills. Jesus ESEA loves fucking up everything
2018-01-03 23:03
retarded rule
2018-01-03 23:08
This new rule should apply to any new player entering MDL. Snakes and Neptune are in NY for the MDL S26 LAN. Why tell them now they can't compete again until they are 16 when they have already been successful. There are always exceptions to the rule. There have been 10 year olds that go to high school and 12 year olds that go to college - do we put age requirements on them? If someone shows the ability they should not be held back they should be applauded.

If ESEA governs MDL and they both knew that players had to be 16 to be pro why did MDL and ESEA allow 15 yr olds to compete in MDL where winner becomes pro in NY this weekend. The way I see it the ESEA and MDL allowed Snakes to become pro which he did. They gave him the opportunity because they allowed this to happen. They could have stopped 15 yr olds before they got to NY. This is their mistake and I think they have to own up to it and allow Snakes to continue as a pro with Soar.
